The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday approved Remdesivir for Coronavirus treatment. This makes it the first drug to be used to treat people with the new coronavirus.
What is this drug? And how does it help people with Coved-19? Has it become the only hope of saving patients around the world?
Here are the top information available about Remdesivir
Remdesivir is an antiviral initially produced for treatment of Ebola virus that has appeared in Africa and has shown good results, but some countries have preferred to use other drugs.
Talk about the drug has returned after showing positive results for the treatment of SARS and Mers patients.
Producer: American company Gilead sciences.
The drug prevents the virus from multiplying in the body by inhibiting the action of a particular enzyme the virus needs to reproduce.
Donating 1.5 million doses
During a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House, executive chairman Daniel Odie described the move as an important first step.
He said the company donated 1.5 million doses of Remdesivir to help patients, adding: “We want to make sure that there are no obstacles to the arrival of Remdesivir for Coronavirus patients.”
Fauci praised it
Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who is part of the White House task force to combat Coronavirus, praised the new drug and stressed that the new treatment accelerates healing for people with Coronavirus.
He added that the results prove that “the new drug can stop this virus and opens the door to the fact that we now have the ability to treat patients.”
Experiences
After receiving FDA approval for clinical trials, the company has since March initiated several trials on a large number of patients.
The trials were divided into three phases, the goal being to assess the safety and efficacy of the drug, and the effectiveness of giving critically ill patients two doses, the first on a period of five days and the second for 10 days.
The U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which participated in the trials, detailed one of its trials on more than 1,000 patients, and noted that patients who were given the drug improved on average after 11 days, compared to an average of 15 days for those who did not receive treatment.
Trials to date have shown that patients have recovered from pneumonia and no longer need oxygen support.
Stat’s medical news website said that a University of Chicago hospital participated in a study of the drug, and said it had monitored a rapid recovery from symptoms of fever and respiratory tract syndrome as almost all patients left the hospital in less than a week.
Duration of treatment
The treatment is given through Intravenous injection, the optimal duration of treatment is still under study in ongoing clinical trials, and there is a proposal for two treatment cycles, the first of which is five days and the other for 10 days, and the last for cases requiring respiratory support devices.
Who’s going to get the drug?
Critical cases and hospitals that desperately need the drug are given priority, but company officials have confirmed that there will be cooperation with international partners to expand its production.
The company also said it has donated about 1.5 million doses to meet urgent medical needs, which means that about 140,000 courses could be provided.
The company aims to produce 500,000 treatment cycles by October, 1 million by December 2020 and millions more in 2021, if necessary.

According to the New York Post, Remdesivir is characterized by the fact that it targets the coronavirus without damaging the patient’s other cells and accelerates the recovery process of the virus.
It explained that China had raised doubts about the drug Remdesivir, saying that it was not effective at all with the new coronavirus, and that the results of his experiments had proved to be a failure.

وافقت إدارة الأغذية والدواء الأمريكية، أمس الجمعة، على عقار ريمديسيفير لعلاج كورونا .. ما يجعله أول عقار صرح باستخدامه لعلاج المصابين بفيروس كورونا المستجد.

إليك أبرز المعلومات المتاحة عن عقار ريمديسيفير
ريمديسيفير هو مضاد للفيروسات أنتج في بادئ الأمر للعلاج من فيروس إيبولا الذي ظهر في أفريقيا وأظهر نتائج جيدة، لكن بعض الدول المصابة به فضلت استخدام أدوية أخرى.
عاد الحديث حول العقار مرة أخرى بعد أن أظهر نتائج إيجابية لعلاج مرضى فيروسي “سارس” و”ميرس”.
الشركة المنتجة : غيلياد ساينسز” الأمريكية
يعمل العقار على منع الفيروس من التكاثر في الجسم من خلال تثبيط عمل إنزيم معين يحتاج إليه الفيروس للتكاثر.
التبرع بمليون ونصف المليون جرعة
ووصف الرئيس التنفيذي للشركة المنتجة دانيال أودي، الإجراء، خلال اجتماع مع الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب في البيت الأبيض، بأنه خطوة أولى مهمة.
وقال إن الشركة تبرعت بمليون ونصف المليون جرعة من عقار ريمديسيفير لمساعدة المرضى، مضيفا: “نحن نريد التأكد من عدم وجود معوّقات بشأن وصول دواء ريمديسيفير لمصابي فيروس كورونا”.
فاوتشي أشاد به
وأشاد أنطوني فاوتشي، مدير المعهد الوطني للحساسية والأمراض المُعدية، والذي يعمل ضمن فريق عمل البيت الأبيض لمكافحة فيروس كورونا، بالعقار الجديد، وأكد أن العلاج الجديد يسرع العلاج للمصابين بكورونا .
وأضاف أن النتائج تثبت أن “الدواء الجديد يمكن أن يمنع هذا الفيروس ويفتح الباب أمام حقيقة أن لدينا الآن القدرة على علاج المرضى”.
التجارب
بعد الحصول على موافقة إدارة الأغذية والدواء الأمريكية للقيام بتجارب سريرية، شرعت الشركة منذ مارس في عدة تجارب على عدد كبير من المرضى.
تم تقسيم التجارب على ثلاث مراحل، وكان الهدف هو تقييم سلامة وفعالية الدواء، ومدى فعالية إعطاء المرضى من ذوي الحالات الحرجة جرعتين، الأولى مدتها خمسة أيام والثانية 10 أيام.
المعهد الوطني الأميركي للحساسية والأمراض المعدية، الذي شارك بالتجارب، ذكر تفاصيل إحدى التجارب التي أجراها على أكثر من 1000 مريض، وأشار المعهد إلى أن المرضى الذين أعطوا العقار تحسنت حالتهم في المتوسط بعد 11 يوما، مقارنة بمتوسط 15 يوما لمن لم يتلقوا العلاج.
والتجارب التي أجريت حتى الآن أظهرت أن المرضى تعافوا من الالتهاب الرئوي ولم يعودوا بحاجة إلى دعم الأوكسجين.
موقع (ستات) الإخباري الطبي على الإنترنت قال إن مستشفى تابعا لجامعة شيكاغو شارك في دراسة خاصة بالدواء، وقال إنه رصد تعافيا سريعا من أعراض الحمى والجهاز التنفسي حيث غادر جميع المرضى تقريبا المستشفى خلال أقل من أسبوع.
مدة العلاج
يؤخذ العلاج بحقنة في الوريد، والمدة المثلى للعلاج لا تزال قيد الدراسة في التجارب السريرية الجارية، وهناك مقترح بدورتين علاجيتين، الأولى مدتها خمسة أيام والثانية 10 أيام، والأخيرة للحالات التي تحتاج إلى أجهزة دعم التنفس.
من سيحصل على العقار؟
يتم إعطاء أولوية للحالات الحرجة، والمستشفيات التي تحتاج إلى العقار بشدة، لكن مسؤولي الشركة أكدوا أنه سيكون هناك تعاون مع شركاء دوليين لتوسيع نطاق إنتاجه.
الشركة قالت كذلك إنها تبرعت بنحو 1.5 مليون جرعة تلبية الاحتياجات الطبية العاجلة، وهو ما يعني إمكانية توفير نحو 140 ألف دورة علاجية.
وتسعى الشركة لإنتاج 500 ألف دورة علاجية بحلول أكتوبر ، ومليون دورة بحلول ديسمبر 2020 وملايين أخرى في عام 2021، إذا لزم الأمر.
ريمديسيفير.. ردود أفعال دولية
وحسب صحيفة نيويورك بوست يتميز ريمديسيفير بأنه يعمل على استهداف فيروس كورونا دون الإضرار بالخلايا الأخرى للمريض، ويسرّع من عمليات الشفاء من الفيروس.
وأوضحت أن الصين أثارت شكوكا حول دواء ريمديسيفير، وقالت إنه غير فعال على الإطلاق مع فيروس كورونا الجديد، وأن نتائج تجاربه أثبتت فشله.
وكانت اليابان أعلنت في 28 أبريل الماضي، أنها ستعتمد عقار ريمديسيفير كعلاج لمرضى فيروس كورونا.
