Electronic Devices to Deter Shark Attacks

Paris: The systematic use of electronic devices to repel sharks ensures that more than 1,000 injuries are avoided over the next 50 years in Australian waters, a recent study has shown.

Marine biologists have studied shark attacks in Australia over the past 120 years and based their studies on the findings to try to estimate the number of avoidable injuries if surfers, swimmers and other seafarers are equipped with shark repellent devices.

The study showed that 1,063 people were likely to be injured by such attacks by 2066.

Shark attacks are exceptional cases, where the number of injuries in Australia reached 22 in 2020, which killed seven people.

Australia topped the list of countries with the highest number of shark attacks in the past year.

Flinders University in Adelaide, professor Corey Bradshaw said the decline in the number of people being attacked by sharks reduces the motivation to kill sharks, whether by fishing, beach nets or ropes.

ودرس علماء الأحياء البحرية هجمات أسماك القرش التي شهدتها أستراليا خلال الأعوام الـ 120 المنصرمة، واستندوا إلى النتائج لمحاولة تقدير عدد الإصابات التي يمكن تجنبها إذا كان راكبو الأمواج والسباحون وغيرهم من مرتادي البحر مزوّدين بأجهزة مضادة لأسماك القرش.

وبيّنت هذه الدراسة أنه من المحتمل إصابة 1063 شخصًا جرّاء مثل هذه الهجمات بحلول عام 2066. وهجمات أسماك القرش تشكّل حالات استثنائية، وصل عددها في أستراليا إلى 22 عامَ 2020 وأسفرت عن مقتل سبعة أشخاص.

وتصدّرت أستراليا قائمة الدول التي شهدت أكبر عددٍ من هجمات أسماك القرش في العام المنصرم. ورأى الأستاذ في جامعة فليندرز في أديلايد كوري برادشو أنّ تراجع عدد الأشخاص الذين يتعرضون لهجمات أسماك القرش يقلل الدوافع لقتل أسماك القرش سواء بواسطة الصيد أو شباك الشاطئ أو الحبال.
