Covid-19 forces Britons to line up in front of food banks

Al-Sharq – WGOQatar Translations

London: The Corona pandemic imposed a painful reality on thousands of British families after losing jobs or stopping trade and business due to the lockdown imposed in the United Kingdom, and despite the British government’s plans to provide financial support to those who have lost their sources of income, since the start of the pandemic until now, the situation of these families has become almost sad. You can see this distressing reality in many neighborhoods and regions in the British capital, where the queues of those wishing to obtain free food supplies from charities have become a prominent sign in the streets of the capital, and these queues exceeded the space allocated for them to be estimated in many cases for more than half a mile extension, and with the continuation of the general lockdown in the United Kingdom it is increasingly difficult for families to provide food for their children.

The increase in queues

Since the start of the pandemic, the British government has sought to alleviate the burden on the British at all levels, and the government has presented a comprehensive plan to provide support and social care to those in need who have lost their jobs or stopped their trade due to the general closure in the country, and the value of the subsidy has reached nearly £200 billion. £9 billion were added to face more obstacles facing those who have lost their source of livelihood in Britain, and the municipalities have supported many projects, such as food banks, to provide the necessary food supplies to the thousands of Britons who lost their jobs or closed their shops and stopped their business during the pandemic,

Many charities, private projects and religious centers also participated in providing food aid to many Britons who joined the needy and the poor, namely those with professions and university degrees who were able to provide for their needs before the pandemic, and despite the British government’s plans to confront the crises of the British during the pandemic, however, thousands of the British middle and educated classes had to stand in long lines in front of the food banks to get their food needs on a daily or weekly basis, especially in the British capital, London.

The Middle class

Every day, more and more people are standing in line to get free food from food banks across London, and as the lockdown continues, thousands are losing their jobs, business and trade, and the graduates and distinguished experts’ financial situation is becoming worse.

In the beginning, the Bright Haiti , the co-founder of the “Pounds Green” food bank in East London, mentioned that the phenomenon of the presence of many educated middle-class individuals among the ranks of those in need of food supplies is new to food banks, especially since the start of the pandemic, noting in its dialogue with journalists that a rate of 10% of the people to receive food aid are from the middle class.

the Bright Haiti explained that the bank “Pounds Green” supports 450 families, equivalent to 1,200 people, an increase of 5 times the number that the bank used to provide food aid to before the pandemic. There is an increase in educated middle families, and most of them have lost jobs and have loans or are the owners of private businesses.

With all this stopped, they became among the class in need of the necessary food aid to secure a livelihood for their family members during the pandemic, and there are many calls from the owners of banks and charitable institutions that provide food aid to the British, blatant calls for the British government to increase social support for more than a million people, as the British Parliament called on the need to discuss this issue in order to confront the explosion of the situation in this educated middle class in Britain, where the number of people in need of food aid has increased in huge proportions since the start of the general lockdown.

Britons never imagined standing in lines for food

In areas on the outskirts of London, such as Brixton and West Ham, south London, many British families are facing misery and food shortages due to the loss of their jobs during the country’s general lockdown, with the food bank of charities in the area providing food assistance to nearly 25,500 people from April to November, twice as many as last year, According to the UK National Foundation for Social and Economic Research,

The poverty rate in the United Kingdom rose from 0.7% to 1.5%, as the pandemic crisis revealed an extremely difficult situation for many Britons, and Alison Ingils-Jones, an official at the National Food Bank, said in a press release, that there are individuals from the British community. We did not imagine their presence in the ranks of people in need of food aid since the start of the general lockdown due to the pandemic in Britain, including those who worked in the field of hotels, trade and major restaurants.

British children are the most affected

British children are the most affected by the lockdown, with many of them being provided with free school meals on their way to school and with the schools being closed there has been a shortage of meals taken by these children, which has prompted the British Government to deliver these free meals to children’s homes during the general lockdown in Britain, through its network of 1,200 food banks, The Trussel Trust has dedicated its network of 1,200 food banks to delivering these meals to children at home, an unprecedented challenge for the government charity during the general closure period, and a spokesman for the government charity predicted that the number of people in need of food aid would rise further during the current period.
