The inventor of cassette tape, Lou Ottens, dies age 94

THE HAGUE, Netherlands: Lou Ottens, the Dutch inventor of the cassette tape, the medium of choice for millions of bedroom mix tapes, has died, said Philips, the company where he also helped develop the compact disc.
Ottens died Saturday at age 94, Philips confirmed.
A structural engineer who trained at the prestigious Technical University in Delft, he joined Philips in 1952 and was head of the Dutch company’s product development department when he began work on an alternative for existing tape recorders with their cumbersome large spools of tape.
His goal was simple. Make tapes and their players far more portable and easier to use.
“During the development of the cassette tape, in the early 1960s, he had a wooden block made that fit exactly in his coat pocket,” said Olga Coolen, director of the Philips Museum in the southern city of Eindhoven. “This was how big the first Compact Cassette was to be, making it a lot handier than the bulky tape recorders in use at the time.”
The final product created in 1962 later turned into a worldwide hit, with more than 100 billion cassettes sold, many to music fans who would record their own compilations direct from the radio. Its popularity waned with the development of the compact disc, an invention Ottens also helped create as supervisor of a development team, Philips said.
The cassette tape’s success stemmed from its simplicity, Ottens said in an interview published by the Philips Museum.
“It was a breakthrough because it was foolproof,” he said, adding that players and recorders also could run on batteries, making them very user-friendly and, ultimately, portable.
“Everybody could put music in their pocket,” Ottens said.
The prototype wooden block never made it to the company’s museum. Ottens used it to prop up his jack when replacing a wheel with a flat tire and left it by the side of a road, Coolen said.
“Lou loved technology, when he talked about that his eyes began to twinkle,” museum director Coolen said.

لاهاي: توالت رسائل الإشادة الجمعة إثر الإعلان عن وفاة المهندس الهولندي لو أوتنز الذي يُنسب إليه الفضل في اختراع شريط التسجيل الصوتي (كاسيت) والمساهمة في ابتكار الأقراص المدمجة، عن عمر يناهز 94 عاماً.
وأحدثت أشرطة الكاسيت التي ابتكرها خلال عمله لمجموعة فيليبس العملاقة في مجال الكهربائيات، نقلة نوعية في عالم الموسيقى إذ أتاحت لأول مرة حمل التسجيلات بسهولة وسمحت لجيل من عشاق الموسيقى بإنجاز شرائط يمزجون فيها أغنياتهم المفضلة.
وصُنع أكثر من مئة مليار شريط كاسيت في كل أنحاء العالم في العصر الذهبي لهذا المنتج من ستينيات القرن الماضي إلى الثمانينيات، حتى أنها لقيت رواجا متجددا في السنوات الأخيرة لدى محبي المنتجات القديمة.
وقالت أولغا كولين مديرة متحف فيليبس في مدينة إيندهوفن الهولندية في بيان “لقد أحزننا جميعا نبأ وفاة لو أوتنز. كان لو رجلاً غير عادي يحب التكنولوجيا، رغم البدايات المتواضعة لاختراعاته”.
وأشارت فيليبس إلى أن أوتنز توفي في السادس من آذار/مارس في قرية دويزل الهولندية قرب الحدود البلجيكية.
ولد أوتنز العام 1926 في مدينة بيلينغفولده الهولندية، وأظهر اهتماما بالتكنولوجيا في سن مبكرة خلال فترة احتلال ألمانيا النازية لهولندا في الحرب العالمية الثانية.
وذكرت صحيفة “إن آر سي” الهولندية أنه صنع جهاز راديو لتلقي إرسال إذاعة أورانيه “الهولندية الحرة” عبر هوائي خاص أطلق عليه اسم “جيرمان فلتر” (الفلتر الألماني) لقدرته على تجنب التشويش النازي.
وانضم أوتنز إلى فيليبس بعد دراسة الهندسة في الجامعة حيث طور هو وفريقه أول مسجل شرائط محمول في العالم، وفقا للشركة العملاقة.
لكن انزعاجه من نظام البكرة الضخم الذي يحتاج إلى لف يدوي دفعه إلى اختراع شريط الكاسيت في العام 1962.
ونقلت صحيفة “إن آر سي” عن أوتنز قوله في إحدى المقابلات “اخترعنا شريط الكاسيت بدافع الانزعاج من مسجل الأشرطة الموجود حينها، الأمر بهذه البساطة”.
وبعد أفول نجمها في السنوات الأخيرة مع انتشار الابتكارات الجديدة، عادت أشرطة الكاسيت إلى الواجهة أخيراً.
فقد نمت مبيعات ألبومات أشرطة الكاسيت في الولايات المتحدة بنسبة 23% في العام 2018، بحسب “نيلسن ميوزيك”، إذ سجلت 219 ألف نسخة بعدما كانت 178 ألفا في 2017.
