UNICEF: Conflicts, Disputes Threaten Lives of Millions of Children

New York: The United Nations Emergency Fund (UNICEF) warned that conflicts and disputes around the world threaten the lives of millions of children and put them in danger, as well as prevent them and their families to access water and sanitation services.
In a report issued Tuesday, UNICEF called for the provision of immediate protection of children in conflicts and the insurance of access to enough safe water, and it called on all parties in conflicts and disputes as well as workers in these fields to immediately stop their attacks on water and sanitation services, and commit to their obligations to protect children in conflict situations, including the protection of water and sanitation infrastructure.
It also called on states, including members of the Security Council, to take firmer action to hold the perpetrators of these attacks to account; for donors to invest in water and sanitation in conflict situations; and for the public to add their voice to protect infrastructure, and water workers
In this context, UNICEF Director for Emergency Programs Manuel Fontaine said that access to water is a means of survival that must never be used as a tactic of war, adding that “when the flow of water stops, diseases like cholera and diarrhea can spread like wildfire, often with fatal consequences, and rates of malnutrition and wasting increase.
“Children and families are often forced out in search of water, exposing them, particularly girls, to an increased risk of harm and violence,” added Fontaine.
The report focused on nine countries where violence and conflict are prevalent, including countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe, revealing that around 48 million people are estimated to need safe water and sanitation services in those countries.

كما دعت الدول، بما فيها أعضاء مجلس الأمن، إلى اتخاذ إجراءات حازمة لمحاسبة مرتكبي هذه الهجمات.

وسلط التقرير الضوء على تسع دول بما في ذلك البلدان في جميع انحاء الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا وآسيا وأوروبا وقدر عدد الذين يحتاجون إلى مياه مأمونة وخدمات صرف صحي بنحو 48 مليون شخص، من بينهم أطفال.
