New Delhi: Deaths from the novel coronavirus in India passed 100,000 on Saturday, official data showed as the pandemic continued to rage across the world’s second most populous country.
A total of 100,842 people have now died, health ministry figures showed, giving India the third-highest death toll in the world behind the United States and Brazil.
In terms of infections, India has recorded 6.47 million cases and is on course to overtake the US as the country with the most infections in the coming weeks.
India’s population of 1.3 billion is, however, around four times larger than that of the United States, which has seen more than twice as many deaths, raising doubts about India’s official numbers.
“We do not know the reliability of death rates in India,” virologist T. Jacob John told AFP.
“India does not have a public health surveillance system, documenting real-time all disease events and deaths,” he said.
Even though India is carrying out around one million tests per day, as a percentage of the population its testing rate is much lower than many other countries.
The United States, for example, has tested more than five times as many people as India proportionately, according to tracking website Worldometer.
That India’s real numbers might be much worse than the official data suggest is borne out by a string of studies measuring antibodies to the virus among the population.
On Tuesday, India’s lead pandemic agency released a survey suggesting that more than 60 million people — 10 times the official figure — could have contracted the virus.

A strict lockdown imposed in March not only failed to stop the spread of the virus but also caused misery for millions of people suddenly left jobless.
In the last quarter, the Indian economy — which even before the pandemic was struggling — shrank 24 percent, one of the steepest drops of any major economy.
International commercial flights remain suspended although limited services, many to allow citizens to return to their home countries, have been operating.
Trains, metros, domestic flights, markets and restaurants have already reopened or resumed service, with some restrictions.
On Wednesday, the government said that all schools could re-open along with cinemas and swimming polls, subject to certain conditions.
Uttar Pradesh state, home to 200 million people, is allowing religious events from October 15, clearing the way for major gatherings in India’s upcoming festive season.
The state of Bihar will allow its 70 million voters to cast ballots in upcoming elections, one of the biggest to take place worldwide since the pandemic began.

تجاوزت الوفيات الناجمة عن فيروس كورونا الجديد في الهند 100,000 يوم السبت، حسبما أظهرت البيانات الرسمية مع استمرار احتدام الوباء في البلاد ثاني أكبر دولة في العالم من حيث عدد السكان.
اظهرت أرقام وزارة الصحة أن ما عدده 100842 شخصاً قد توفوا إلى الآن، مما يجعل الهند ثالث دولة في العالم من حيث عدد الوفيات بعد الولايات المتحدة والبرازيل .
ومن حيث الإصابات، سجلت الهند 6.47 مليون حالة، وهى في طريقها لتجاوز الولايات المتحدة باعتبارها الدولة التي بها أكبر عدد من الإصابات في الاسابيع القادمة .
غير أن عدد سكان الهند البالغ 1.3 مليار نسمة يزيد بنحو أربعة أضعاف عن عدد سكان الولايات المتحدة التي شهدت أكثر من ضعف عدد الوفيات مما أثار الشكوك حول الارقام الرسمية للهند .
وقال عالم الفيروسات ت. جاكوب جون لوكالة فرانس برس “لا نعرف مدى موثوقية معدلات الوفيات في الهند”.
وقال ” إن الهند ليس لديها نظام لمراقبة الصحة العامة يوثق في الوقت الحقيقي جميع أحداث الأمراض والوفيات ” .
وعلى الرغم من أن الهند تجري حوالي مليون اختبار يومياً، فإن معدل اختبارها، كنسبة مئوية من السكان، أقل بكثير من العديد من البلدان الأخرى.
فالولايات المتحدة، على سبيل المثال، أجرت اختبارات لأكثر من خمسة أضعاف عدد الأشخاص الذين تم اختبارهم في الهند بشكل متناسب، وفقاً لموقع التتبع Worldometer.
إن الأرقام الحقيقية للهند قد تكون أسوأ بكثير مما تشير إليه البيانات الرسمية تؤكده سلسلة من الدراسات التي تقيس الأجسام المضادة للفيروس بين السكان.

في الوقت نفسه، تمضي حكومة رئيس الوزراء ناريندرا مودي قدماً في فتح ثالث أكبر اقتصاد في آسيا حتى مع ارتفاع حالات الإصابة بالفيروس.
ولم يفشل الإغلاق الصارم الذي فُرض في مارس في وقف انتشار الفيروس فحسب، بل تسبب أيضاً في بؤس الملايين من الناس الذين تركوا فجأة عاطلين عن العمل.
في الربع الأخير، انكمش الاقتصاد الهندي ـ الذي كان يعاني حتى قبل انتشار الوباء ـ بنسبة 24 في المائة، وهو أحد أشد حالات الانكماش الاقتصادي سوءاً بالنسبة لاقتصاد رئيسي.
ولا تزال الرحلات التجارية الدولية متوقفة رغم أن الخدمات المحدودة، التي يسمح الكثير منها للمواطنين بالعودة إلى بلدانهم الأصلية، تعمل.
وقد أعيد فتح القطارات والمترو والرحلات الداخلية والأسواق والمطاعم بالفعل أو استأنفت الخدمة، مع بعض القيود.
وفى يوم الأربعاء قالت الحكومة إن جميع المدارس يمكن أن تفتح أبوابها مرة اخرى إلى جانب دور السينما والمسابح وفقاً لشروط معينة .
تسمح ولاية أوتار براديش، التي يعيش فيها 200 مليون نسمة، بتنظيم مناسبات دينية اعتباراً من 15 أكتوبر، مما يمهد الطريق أمام التجمعات الكبرى في موسم الأعياد المقبل في الهند.
وستسمح ولاية بيهار للناخبين البالغ عددهم 70 مليون ناخب بالإدلاء بأصواتهم في الانتخابات القادمة التي تعتبر من أكبر الانتخابات التي ستجرى في جميع أنحاء العالم منذ بدء انتشار الوباء .
