Washington: A proposed relief agreement aimed at preventing U.S. airlines from implementing massive job cuts in the House of Representatives was halted. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Republicans have prevented the bill from being introduced, but these efforts will continue to provide relief to the industry.
“Republicans have prevented the House of Representatives from providing emergency relief to tens of thousands of airline workers who are on the brink of losing their livelihoods,” Pelosi said in a statement.
Earlier Friday, Pelosi pledged additional support to airlines affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, urging them to stop laying off jobs. “Forced leave and the dismissal of American airline workers threatens the lives of tens of thousands and threatens to accelerate the devastating economic crisis facing our nation,” Pelosi said in a statement.
“I call on airlines to postpone the devastating job write-offs, as progress is made in Congress on providing assistance to airline employees.” She added that Representatives would provide more assistance to airlines through a “comprehensive aid bill negotiated” or “separate bipartisan legislation.”
