Storm Elsa Turns Into Hurricane While It Approaches Florida’s Gulf Coast

Washington: Tropical Storm Elsa has strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane as it approached the coast of Florida, in the southeastern United States.

The US National Hurricane Center said in a statement Wednesday that the hurricane is advancing at a speed of 22 kph, accompanied by strong winds of 120 kph, indicating that if the hurricane continues its current path, it will pass over the west coast of Florida or close to it.

The US authorities asked residents to prepare for dangerous storms and possible power outages.

Lieutenant Governor of Florida Jeanette Nunez said that they are calling on Florida residents to start making preparations. That includes being prepared to be without power for a few days and having enough food and water for each family member, she added.

Nunez stressed that if people are asked to evacuate, they should listen to local officials. She said counties will open shelters as-needed if they issue evacuations.

Storm Elsa in the Dominican Republic caused at least two deaths, while another person died in Saint Lucia after it struck an eastern Caribbean region.

Hurricane Elsa arrives in Florida less than two weeks after the disaster that struck the small oceanside town of Surfside, Florida, where part of an apartment building collapsed last June, killing dozens of people, while 109 people are still missing.

واشنطن: تحولت العاصفة الاستوائية /إلسا/ إلى إعصار من الدرجة الأولى مع اقترابها من سواحل ولاية فلوريدا الواقعة في جنوب شرق الولايات المتحدة.

وأوضح المركز الوطني الأمريكي للأعاصير في بيان، أوردته قناة /الحرة/ الأمريكية اليوم، أن الإعصار يتقدم بسرعة 22 كيلو مترا في الساعة مصحوبا برياح عاتية تبلغ سرعتها 120 كلم في الساعة.. مشيرا إلى أنه إذا واصل الإعصار مساره الحالي فسيمر فوق الساحل الغربي لفلوريدا أو على مقربة منه.

وكانت السلطات الأمريكية طلبت من السكان التأهب لمواجهة عواصف خطرة وانقطاع محتمل للتيار الكهربائي.

وقالت السيدة جانيت نونيز مساعدة حاكم فلوريدا : “ندعو سكان فلوريدا لبدء استعداداتهم وهذا يتضمن احتمالية البقاء بدون كهرباء لبضعة أيام، والتزود بما يكفي من الطعام والماء لكل فرد من أفراد الأسرة”.. مضيفة إذا كانت هناك أوامر إخلاء في المنطقة، فمراكز الإيواء الطارئة مفتوحة.

وتسببت العاصفة /إلسا/ في الدومينيكان بوفاة شخصين على الأقل، فيما توفي شخص آخر في /سانت لوسيا/ بعد أن ضربت منطقة في شرق الكاريبي.

ويصل إعصار /إلسا/ إلى فلوريدا بعد أقل من أسبوعين من الكارثة التي حلت ببلدة /سيرفسايد/ الصغيرة المطلة على المحيط بولاية فلوريدا حيث انهار جزء من مبنى سكني، في يونيو الماضي، موديا بأرواح العشرات في حين لا يزال 109 أشخاص في عداد المفقودين.
