Children with special needs learn social skills at QNL camp

Doha: The Qatar National Library presented a three-day sensory play camp programme for toddlers, children with special needs and their parents.

The programme kicked off at the Children’s Library on July 9 and was designed for children with difficulties in sensory processing and motor coordination, as well as toddlers up to the age of three to help with their sensory development milestones.

Using sensory integration principles, the programme was intended to help children and parents learn strategies to meet daily sensory needs. The activities were designed to improve fine motor and gross motor skills, while also teach children how to participate as part of a group.

The camp also kept the youngsters and their parents engaged with a programme of activities, games and crafts that incorporated new textures, materials, colours, smells, and sounds to stimulate all the senses.

Lauren, an attendee at the event who has recently moved to Qatar, said: “This is my first visit to the Library, and it’s really wonderful to see a variety of activities available for my children and to be able to mingle with other attendees. I feel really welcomed here, the ambiance is amazing, and we will continue to make full use of the Library.”

Another participant, Sanaa Sayegh, said, “This is my second time attending an event here at the library. These events give my children a chance to network with other members of the community and help them develop important social skills. I am happy to see that the Children’s Library is organising very interesting programmes for the young ones to read, socialise and learn.”

نظمت مكتبة قطر الوطنية خلال الفترة من 9 -11 يوليو الحالي مخيماً لألعاب الأطفال الذين يعانون من الاضطرابات الحسية أو تأخر النمو الحسي والحركي، وكذلك الأطفال الرضع حتى سن 3 أعوام وأولياء أمورهم.

استهدفت أنشطة المخيم مساعدة الأطفال وأولياء الأمور على تعلم الاستراتيجيات التي تلبي الاحتياجات الحسية والحركية اليومية، وتحسين المهارات الحركية الكلية والدقيقة، وتعليم الأطفال كيفية المشاركة والعمل ضمن فريق أو مجموعة.

وتضمن المخيم سلسلة من الأنشطة والألعاب والأشغال اليدوية للأطفال الصغار وأولياء أمورهم، اشتملت على موادٍ متنوعة من أشكال وأنسجة وألوان وخامات وأصوات مختلفة لتحفيز جميع الحواس.

وقالت لورين -التي انتقلت مؤخرًا للإقامة في قطر وشاركت في المخيم-: «هذه أول مرة أزور فيها المكتبة، وكانت رؤية هذه الأنشطة المتنوعة للأطفال أمراً رائعاً، وقد أسعدني إتاحة الفرصة للتواصل والتفاعل مع الأمهات المشاركات في المخيم. وأضافت: «إن الأجواء العامة في المكتبة مذهلة، وبالتأكيد، سوف أزورها كثيراً حتى أستفيد من كنوزها المعرفية وفعالياتها المختلفة». وذكرت سناء صايغ -إحدى الأمهات اللاتي حضرن المخيم-: «إن هذه الفعاليات تتيح لأطفالي فرصة للتواصل مع الأعضاء الآخرين في المجتمع، وتساعدهم على اكتساب المهارات الاجتماعية المهمة».
