Al Attiyah tightens grip on overall lead in Qatar Cross-Country Rally

LUSAIL: A third successive stage victory for Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah and French co-driver Matthieu Baumel enabled the Toyota Hilux crew to extend their overall lead in the Manateq Qatar Cross-Country Rally to 9min 52sec yesterday.

The five-time event winner opened the road on the longest stage of the entire event (351.98km) and overcame the tricky navigation and a series of unforgiving sand dunes to card the target time of 3hrs 27min 33sec.

Team-mates Yazeed Al Rajhi and Dirk von Zitzewitz pushed the Qatari hard from the outset and the second fastest time enabled the Toyota driver to edge in front of Polish rival Jakub Przygonski and his German navigator Timo Gottschalk in the overall standings. The two are now separated by just 54 seconds in the fight for second place.

Al Attiyah said: “Another good day, but it was not easy at all. We started from the sand dunes and the navigation was a little bit difficult. We didn’t make any mistakes. We try to push in some places where I felt good, but I also tried to save our car because that is important. We had a problem with one tyre (delaminating), but we managed.”

The Russian crew of Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstantin Zhiltsov stopped short of the second passage control for a short time, but finished the stage with the fourth fastest time to hold a similar place in the overall standings.

Italian Eugenio Amos felt unwell and was forced to stop his Ford 2WD Buggy before the dunes, north of the Inland Sea, and his demise lifted Yasir Seaidan and French navigator Laurent Lichtleuchter to fifth overall in the second of the X–raid MINIs. Czech driver Miroslav Zapletal stayed out of serious trouble in his Ford F-150 Evo to hold sixth place, despite one puncture and four small navigational errors.

Bernhard Ten Brinke struggled to make headway on the third stage in the last of the Overdrive Toyotas. He lost time with navigational woes before the second passage control, although he was able to climb from 11th to seventh in the overall rankings.

Monster Energy Can-Am driver Reinaldo Varela was the main beneficiary of numerous stoppages and issues for rival T3 competitors. The Brazilian set the second fastest time in the category behind Ahmed Al Kuwari, holds eighth overall and now has a T3 advantage of 1hrs 49min 15sec over ninth-placed Fedor Yorobeyev. Qatari Khalid Al Mohannadi and Italian female rider Camelia Liparoti rounded off a decimated top 11.

Mohammed Al Attiyah ground to a halt north of the Inland Sea and fell out of contention for overall T3 honours with huge delays, while Omani driver Abdullah Al Zubair also ruined his chance of winning T3 after turbo-related issues.

Al Zubair’s Qatari co-driver Nasser Al Kuwari explained: “It was around 70km in the stage and we were leading the T3. We felt there was no power in the car. We try to move again. Varela caught us, but there was white smoke. We knew it was the turbo. We called the team and we took the decision to come back to Lusail.”

Russian driver Fedor Vorobeyev lost considerable time digging his way out of a sandy hole in the dunes and Qatar’s Adel Abdulla suffered his own time-consuming delays and was running well behind the leading group.

Mohammed Al Harqan’s goal of winning the T2 category for series production cross-country vehicles was dealt a bitter blow when he suffered technical issues on the eastern coast, north of the Inland Sea. But rival Qatari Mohammed Al Meer was also delayed in the sand, as both T2 cars struggled to cross the demanding terrain. Al Meer eventually snatched the T2 advantage and 12th overall.

The day’s stage of 351.98km included passage control points after 15.42km, 140.72km, 198.15km and 249.95km and also acted as the second of the Qatar Manateq Baja, with national competitors finishing their action at PC2.

Qatar’s Ahmed Al Kuwari and his Italian navigator Manuel Lucchese claimed victory in the second round of the Qatar Manateq Bajas with a time of 1hr 54min 21sec at PC2. The Can-Am driver had lost his chance of pushing for T3 honours in the FIA event on the opening day, but the Baja win was some consolation for the former motorcycle rider.

Khalid Al Mohannadi and his French co-driver Loic Minaudier were second in a Polaris and Saleh Al Saif and Ziad Al Arbi rounded off the top three. Abdulaziz Al Dhafeeri, Hussain Al Mahdi, Abdulaziz Al Basheer, Jahman Jaralla and Nicholas Pacheco all suffered mechanical issues early in the stage.

عزّز السائق القطري ناصر العطية صدارته الترتيب العام في رالي قطر الصحراوي الدولي، أولى جولات بطولة العالم للراليات الصحراوية الطويلة «الكروس كانتري» للموسم 2019، الذي تستمر منافساته الثلاثاء بمشاركة 28 فريقاً يمثلون 19 دولة. وواصل العطية، بصحبة ملاحه الفرنسي ماتيو بوميل، تفوّقه وحصد لقب المرحلة الثالثة على التوالي ضمن الفئة الأقوى «تي 1»، إثر احتلاله المركز الأول بزمن قدره 3.27.33 ساعات، مع نهاية المرحلة التي بلغت مسافتها 351.98 كم.

تفوّق السائق القطري بفارق 1.11 دقيقة عن أقرب منافسيه السائق السعودي يزيد الراجحي بصحبة ملاحه الألماني ديرك فون زيتزفيتز صاحب المركز الثاني، بزمن قدره 3.28,44 ساعات، و2.83 دقيقة عن البولندي ياكوب برزيجونسكي بصحبة ملاحه الألماني تيمو جوتشالك، الذي حل ثالثاً بزمن قدره 3.30.16 ساعات.

واحتل الروسي فلاديمير فاسيلييف، بصحبة ملاحه ومواطنه قسطنطين زيلتسوف، المركز الرابع بزمن 3.46.06 ساعات، فيما أكمل الهولندي برنهارد تن برينكي بصحبة ملاحه البلجيكي طوم كولسول قائمة المراكز الخمسة الأولى بزمن قدره 4.03.29 ساعات.

وعزز العطية صدارته الترتيب العام بزمن إجمالي قدره 7.12.42 ساعات، وبفارق 9.52 دقائق عن السعودي الراجحي، الذي تقدّم إلى المركز الثاني بزمن إجمالي قدره 7.22.34 ساعات، فيما تراجع البولندي برزيجونسكي إلى المركز الثالث بزمن إجمالي قدره 7.23:28 ساعات.

وبعيداً عن منافسات الفئة الأقوى، احتل القطري أحمد الكواري المركز الأول في فئة «تي3» والثامن في الترتيب العام بزمن قدره 4.39.31 ساعات، متقدماً على البرازيلي رينالدو فاريلا صاحب ثاني أسرع توقيت ضمن فئته وصاحب المركز التاسع في الترتيب العام بزمن إجمالي قدره 4.55.47 ساعات. فيما جاء السائق القطري الآخر خالد المهندي ثالثاً في فئته وعاشراً في الترتيب العام بزمن قدره 5.06.24 ساعات.

وفي منافسات فئة «تي2» المخصصة لسيارات الإنتاج كروس كانتري، فقد تصدّر القطري محمد المير الترتيب العام بعد فوزه بلقب المرحلة الثالثة، مستغلاً انسحاب منافسه ومواطنه محمد الحرقان بعد تعرّض سيارته لعطل ميكانيكي.

وشهدت مرحلة الأمس العديد من الأعطال والمشاكل الميكانيكية التي عصفت بالسائقين؛ حيث عاند الحظ السائق القطري محمد العطية الذي اضطر للتوقف شمال البحر الداخلي وخرج من دائرة المنافسة على فئة الـ «تي3». وعرف السائق العُماني عبدالله الزبير المصير ذاته ليتوقف بدوره بسبب مشكلة ميكانيكية مع جهاز شاحن الهواء (التوربو).

وخسر السائق الروسي فيدور فوروبييف الكثير من الوقت وهو يحاول أن يخرج من حفرة رملية في الكثبان، في وقت عانى القطري عادل حسين من التأخر بدوره، ورغم ذلك قاد بوتيرة سريعة خلف المتصدرين في هذه الفئة.

المناعي ينوّه بنجاح «الكروس كنتري»

نوّه عبدالرحمن المناعي -رئيس الاتحاد القطري للسيارات والدراجات النارية- بالنجاح الكبير الذي يحققه رالي قطر الصحراوي الدولي (افتتاحية جولات بطولة كأس العالم للراليات الطويلة «للكروس كانتري»)، مؤكداً أن الدوحة محطة رئيسية لاستضافة أبرز بطولات العالم، سواء في السيارات أو الدراجات النارية.

وقال المناعي في تصريح صحافي، إن مراحل الرالي الثلاث الأولى خرجت بشكل مثالي، وانتهت دون وقوع أي حوادث. لافتاً إلى أن سلامة السائقين هي الهدف الأول للاتحاد في جميع البطولات والجولات التي يستضيفها على أرض الدوحة.

وأضاف أن المستوى الفني للمراحل الثلاث كان متميزاً، خاصة في ظل مشاركة نخبة من أفضل أبطال الراليات في العالم، وفي مقدمتهم البطل القطري ناصر العطية، الذي حقق الفوز في المراحل الثلاث الأولى وتصدّر الترتيب العام المؤقت للرالي حتى الآن.

واعتبر المناعي أن استضافة الدوحة للجولة الافتتاحية من بطولة كأس العالم للراليات الطويلة «الكروس كانتري» للمرة الأولى، تُعدّ بمنزلة ثقة كبيرة من الاتحاد الدولي في قدرات قطر التنظيمية على استضافة مثل هذا الحدث الدولي. مؤكداً أن استراتيجية الاتحاد تقوم على ضرورة أن تكون أجندته متنوعة من مختلف البطولات الدولية، وخاصة البطولات التي تناسب طبيعة المجتمع القطري وثقافته، وكذلك المجالات التي يمكن أن يستطيع الاتحاد تحقيق نتائج فيها.;
