US sees record jump in COVID-19 cases, infections up by almost 40,000 in single day

The US saw a record number of new COVID-19 cases on Thursday as per the John Hopkins University. A total of 39,818 cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

The coronavirus so far has infected more than 2.4 million people and killed over 124,000 in the US. The last time Washington reported cases on this scale was on April 24, with 36,291 cases in a day.

As a result of these new developments, some states are reinstating some restrictions that were placed during the pandemic. Texas Governor Greg Abbott paused any further phases to reopen the state on Thursday and issued an order to ensure hospital beds be available for COVID-19 patients.

According to a Reuters report, Texas has seen one of the biggest jumps in new cases, reporting more than 6,000 in a single day on Monday. “This temporary pause will help our state corral the spread until we can safely enter the next phase of opening our state for business,” Governor Greg Abbott, a said.

A jump in cases is also seen in California and Florida. Texas, California and Florida are the most populous states in the US.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also indicated that his state would not be moving to relax present restrictions, a CNN report reads. In order to fight the new wave of coronavirus cases, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a budget emergency to free up $16 billion.

Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Wyoming are the other states that have seen a jump in new cases.

The head of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said the US has only counted about 10% of coronavirus infections.

Earlier in June, Abbott had said Texas was moving into its Phase III, which meant that most business could operate at up to 50 per cent capacity.

One of the factors resulting in increased cases is increased testing. Factors also include anti-racial protests that began in various cities across the country after an African-American was killed in police custody on May 25. In states that reopened early, people were seen heading out without wearing face masks—another reason according to experts that led to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

Currently, the CDC has been looking at antibody tests done across the country to determine the number of people with past infections who weren’t diagnosed, according to director Dr Robert Redfield. It is seeing many more cases than have been reported officially.
