بايرن ميونيخ يكتب التاريخ بفوز أسطوري ٨-٢ على برشلونة
Bayern Munich has written history. The German Rekordmeister dismantled Barcelona 8-2 in what was the biggest victory by any club in a single Champions League knockout stage game. According to the Transfermarkt database, it was Barcelona’s biggest defeat since their 11-1 defeat to Sevilla in 1940.
For Barcelona, the match will likely ring in an end of an era. The future of head coach Quique Setién already seemed in doubt ahead of the clash against Bayern. It seems unlikely that the 61-year-old will survive this historic defeat suffered at the hands of the German Rekordmeister. “Some decisions were already taken, and others will be taken as a result of this,” Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said after the game. “From next week they’ll be worked through. Right now isn’t the time to make knee-jerk decisions, it’s time to think.”
Bayern Munich will have no such concerns. The Rekordmeister have been transformed ever since Hansi Flick has taken over from Niko Kovac in November. Going into the coronavirus break, Bayern were already four points ahead of second-placed Dortmund, and they would win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal in comfortable fashion.
Because of their form, Bayern Munich was considered favorites to win the Champions League title in Lisbon. There was only one doubt, what would the long break due to Bayern’s form after all the Bundesliga was the first to return from the coronavirus break and also the first to finish leaving Bayern Munich with a long gap with no competitive fixtures.
Any doubt, however, was quickly washed away when Bayern smashed Chelsea 4-1 in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie last week. It was another dominant performance, despite the side still showing moments of rustiness. “It’s a tremendously painful defeat,” Setién said after the game. “They scored more goals than they merited. We started pretty well, but the power of the opponents, in many phases of the play, overran us.”
Those moments of rustiness were also on display on Friday against Barcelona. Twice Bayern’s backline was exposed and one gets the sense that despite the heavy handed win, the Rekordmeister are still not in top form. “We knew that if we put them under pressure, we would get chances,” Flick said.
“We started well, even with the silly equalizer,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić added. “The first half was crazy, it felt like every shot was a goal. It’s special to beat a team like Barcelona like that, but we’re not going to get carried away by the scoreline; we’re really happy, but we want more.”
Through to the semifinal, Bayern, however, know that they have not won anything yet. “We have such quality and intensity in this team, now we need to recharge and focus on the next game, where we start again from zero,” Flick said. “I have to pay compliments to my whole team for keeping up that intensity for 90 minutes.”
Up next will be either Olympique Lyon or Manchester City with former Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola. Many expect City to be the next opponent, and Bayern would certainly relish an opportunity to play against Guardiola. The Spaniard was often praised as having brought in the best football ever being played in Munich. Yet it is under Flick that Bayern play the most dominant football and look destined to win the very treble that eluded Guardiola for three years.
