QRCS open sustainable development projects in Nepal
«الهلال القطري» يفتتح مشاريع تنموية مستدامة في نيبال
Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has completed a multisector development project in Gorkha Bazaar, the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, under an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Gorkha Municipality, for the benefit of 32,636 persons.
The purpose of the project is to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, as well as support livelihoods and food security, through enhancing productive WASH infrastructure.
With an overall budget of $374,000, the project is co-funded by QRCS ($150,000), Gorkha Municipality ($176,862), and UNDP ($47,505). The project involved building a health centre to provide basic health care for 1,200 persons, two water purification and distribution plant for the benefit of 400 families, a basic education school, two irrigation canals, and a waste removal unit for Gorkha’s central hospital.
As a significant contribution to one of the country’s most underserved areas, the new facilities would help to improve the living standards of the population in many ways. From a sustainable perspective, the local community and councils were engaged in the implementation process. Then, the project was handed over to the Gorkha Municipality, under the supervision of UNDP.
The inauguration and handover ceremony was attended by H E Yousuf bin Mohamed Al Hail, Ambassador of Qatar to Nepal; Rajan Raj Panta, Mayor of Gorkha Municipality; Chandrakala Paudel, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation (MoLMCPA); Ayshanie Medagangoda-Labe, Resident Representative of UNDP in Nepal; government and local officials; community leaders; media reporters; and the public.
In his remarks, Al Hail said he was so happy for opening this project, meeting the beneficiaries, and feeling their joy.
He emphasized Qatar’s commitment to supporting Nepal, in light of the strong bilateral government and popular relations. “The Nepalese community in Qatar is highly welcomed,” Al-Hail added.
The Mayor of Gorkha thanked the Ambassador of Qatar, QRCS, and UNDP, promising to do whatever necessary to run the project well and enable everyone to benefit from it. “We are fully responsible for ensuring more effective operation and maintenance,” said Panta.
In her speech, Paudel appreciated the development operations by Qatar in Nepal. She thanked the three partners for making this achievement in one of districts most vulnerable areas. She hoped they would keep working together against poverty. Medagangoda-Labe called for cooperation with QRCS on Phase 2 of UNDP’s Community Infrastructure and Livelihood Recovery Programme (CILRP).
QRCS commenced its work in Nepal in 2013, with multiple WASH projects. In 2015, a representation office was established to respond to a destructive earthquake. Its scope of work expanded to include livelihood, food security, health care, shelter, and emergency relief. So far, these operations have benefited around 1.7 million persons, at a total value of over $2.9m.
افتتح الهلال الأحمر القطري مؤخراً مشروعاً تنموياً متعدد القطاعات في مديرية جوركا وسط نيبال، وذلك بالشراكة مع برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي والسلطات البلدية المحلية، بناء على اتفاقية تنفيذية مشتركة بين الأطراف الثلاثة لفائدة 32,636 شخصاً.
يهدف المشروع إلى تحسين خدمات المياه والإصحاح ورفع مستوى الصحة العامة ودعم سبل كسب العيش والأمن الغذائي، من خلال تأهيل البنى التحتية الإنتاجية المتعلقة بالمياه والإصحاح، وذلك بتكلفة إجمالية قدرها 374,000 دولار، منها 150,000 دولار مقدمة من الهلال الأحمر القطري، و176,862 دولاراً من الحكومة النيبالية عبر بلدية جوركا، و47,505 دولارات كمساهمة من برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي.
ويتضمن المشروع بناء مستوصف صحي لتقديم الرعاية الطبية الأساسية لـ 1,200 شخص من السكان المحليين، وبناء محطتين لمعالجة وتوزيع المياه لفائدة 400 أسرة، وبناء مدرسة تعليم أساسي لأبناء المنطقة، وحفر قناتي ري لتوفير المياه للأراضي المحيطة، وبناء وحدة متخصصة للتخلص من النفايات بالمستشفى المركزي في مديرية جوركا.
وتأتي أهمية هذا المشروع من توفير هذه المرافق الحيوية في أحد أكثر مناطق نيبال احتياجاً، مما يؤدي إلى الارتقاء بمستوى معيشة سكان المنطقة في كثير من جوانب حياتهم. كما اهتم المشروع بعنصر الاستدامة عبر إشراك المجتمع المحلي والمجالس المحلية في تنفيذه، قبل تسليمه إلى بلدية جوركا تحت إشراف المنظمة الأممية. وقد حضر حفل افتتاح وتسليم المشروع كلٌّ من سعادة سفير دولة قطر لدى نيبال السيد يوسف بن محمد الهيل، ورئيس بلدية كورخا السيد رجان راج بانتا، وممثلة الحكومة النيبالية السيدة شاندرا كالا بودل وكيلة وزارة إدارة الأراضي ومحاربة الفقر، ومديرة مكتب برامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي في نيبال السيدة عايشاني لابي.
وأعرب سعادة سفير دولة قطر لدى نيبال في كلمته عن تقديره الكبير وفرحته الغامرة لحضوره افتتاح وتسليم المشروع، ولقائه بالمستفيدين ومشاهدته للبهجة والسرور في وجوههم، كما أشار سعادته إلى أن دولة قطر ملتزمة بدعم نيبال، التي تربطها بقطر روابط قوية على المستويين الرسمي والشعبي، والتقدير الكبير الذي تحظى به الجالية النيبالية المقيمة في قطر.
أما رئيس بلدية جوركا فقد عبر في كلمته عن شكره وتقديره العميق وترحيبه بزيارة سعادة سفير دولة قطر لمديرية جوركا، وتشريفه بالحضور لحفل افتتاح وتسليم المشروع. كما توجه بالشكر والامتنان للهلال الأحمر القطري وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي على دعم وتمويل المشروع والمساعدة على إنجازه وتحقيق أهدافه.
وعبّرت وكيلة وزارة إدارة الأراضي ومحاربة الفقر في كلمتها عن تقدير الحكومة النيبالية الكبير للدعم الذي توفره دولة قطر للمشاريع التنموية في نيبال، كما توجهت بالشكر والتقدير إلى الهلال الأحمر القطري وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي وبلدية جوركا على شراكتهم الثلاثية في تمويل وتنفيذ المشروع في أكثر المناطق هشاشة بالمديرية.
