Over 170 COVID-19 patients received convalescent plasma donations in Qatar

More than 170 COVID-19 patients in Qatar have received Convalescent Plasma (CP) treatment in Qatar so far, half of whom showed improved clinical symptoms, and eventually recovered.

CP treatment involves taking plasma from the blood of patients who have recovered from COVID-19 and transfusing it into patients currently battling the virus. As people fight the COVID-19 virus, their body produces antibodies to attack it. Once a person recovers, the antibodies stay in their body to fight the virus if it returns. Plasma from one recovered patient can be used to treat one to two infected patients.

A plasma donation center has been set up at Hamad Medical Corporation’s Communicable Disease Center. The center has been equipped with the latest devices that work to separate the plasma from the blood directly and then simultaneously return the other components to the donor, and this process takes about 45 minutes. In addition, the center contains plasma preservation devices of 80 degrees below zero, ensuring its suitability for the longest possible period of time.

CP treatment is currently being offered to severe cases. As a result of this treatment, most patients exhibited higher level of blood oxygen and lymphocytes, undetectable viral levels and improved chest scans.

“Giving convalescent plasma to very sick patients under mechanical ventilator or those receiving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) treatment, resulted in a 50% recovery rate. Our target now is to start early and offer it to patient with a moderate COVID-19 infection, before they reach the stage of requiring intensive care or intubation,” said Dr. Muna Al Maslamani, Medical Director, Communicable Disease Center.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to recovered patients who have donated their plasma so far, and we are urging more recovered patients to come forward to donate plasma, which is for a noble cause. Your simple act of kindness is saving lives,” added Dr. Al Maslamani.

According to the new discharge protocol, most patients with COVID-19 in Qatar will be discharged from healthcare facilities fourteen days after their first positive COVID-19 test. After 28 days, they are eligible for donating the plasma subject to laboratory tests, to ensure that enough antibodies are present in their plasma and that it is free from any infectious disease.

“I got infected with COVID-19, so did my whole family. After recovering, I decided to donate my plasma on the hope that I may be able to help other patients recover,” said Mohamed Abdel Salam, Plasma Donor.

Another donor, Abdul Latheef Nattakaram said “I donated my plasma on the hope that it may save a life. I urge all recovered patients to do the same.”

تلقى أكثر من 170 مريضا مصابا بفيروس كورونا (كوفيد-19 ) في قطر حتى الآن العلاج ببلازما المتعافين من المرض، وسجل نصفهم تحسنا في الأعراض السريرية، وتماثلوا للشفاء.

ويقوم العلاج ببلازما المتعافين على أخذ البلازما من دم المرضى الذين تعافوا من فيروس كوفيد-19 ونقله إلى المرضى المصابين بالفيروس حاليا حيث انه أثناء مقاومة الفيروس يقوم جسم المريض بإنتاج أجسام مضادة لمهاجمته، وبمجرد أن يتعافى الشخص تبقى هذه الأجسام المضادة في الجسم لمقاومة الفيروس إذا عاد للجسم مرة أخرى، ويمكن استخدام البلازما من مريض متعافي لعلاج المرضى المصابين بفيروس كوفيد-19 .

وتم إنشاء مركز للتبرع بالبلازما في مركز الأمراض الانتقالية التابع لمؤسسة حمد الطبية وتم تزويده بأحدث الأجهزة التي تعمل على فصل البلازما عن الدم مباشرة ثم تقوم بالوقت نفسه بإعادة المكونات الأخرى للشخص المتبرع حيث تستغرق هذه العملية حوالى 45 دقيقة .

كما يحتوي مركز التبرع بالبلازما على أجهزة حفظ البلازما في درجة حرارة 80 تحت الصفر مما يضمن صلاحيتها لأطول فترة ممكنة .

ويتم حاليا إعطاء علاج بلازما المتعافين إلى حالات الإصابة الشديدة، ونتيجة لهذا العلاج أظهر معظم المرضى مستوى أعلى من الأكسجين في الدم والخلايا الليمفاوية وانخفاض الدفقة الفيروسية إلى مستويات غير ملحوظة وتحسن في الصور المقطعية للصدر.

وقالت الدكتورة منى المسلماني المدير الطبي لمركز الأمراض الانتقالية إن إعطاء بلازما المتعافين للمرضى الذين يعانون من أعراض شديدة ويخضعون لأجهزة التنفس الصناعي أو أولئك الذين يتلقون علاج أكسجة الأغشية خارج الجسم ، أدى إلى معدل تعافي بنسبة 50 بالمائة.

وأوضحت أن الهدف الآن هو البدء مبكرا وتقديم هذا النوع من العلاج للمرضى المصابين بعدوى كوفيد-19 معتدلة، قبل أن يصلوا إلى مرحلة تتطلب العناية المركزة أو استخدام أنبوب التنفس .

ونوهت الدكتورة المسلماني بالمرضى المتعافين الذين تبرعوا بالبلازما، داعية باقي المرضى المتعافين الى التبرع بالبلازما حيث يمكن ذلك أن ينقذ حياة مصابين آخرين.

وفقا للبروتوكول الجديد الذي طبقته مؤسسة حمد الطبية يتم إخراج معظم مرضى كوفيد-19 في قطر من مرافق الرعاية الصحية بعد أربعة 14 يوما من فحص كوفيد-19 الإيجابي الأول، ليصبح هؤلاء مؤهلين بعد 28 يوما للتبرع بالبلازما بعد الخضوع لفحوصات مخبرية للتأكد من وجود أجسام مضادة كافية في البلازما وللتأكد كذلك من خلوها من أي أمراض معدية.

وقال السيد محمد عبد السلام وهو متبرع بالبلازما أنه أصيب بفيروس كوفيد-19 مع جميع أفراد أسرته وقرر التبرع بالبلازما على أمل أن يتمكن من مساعدة المرضى الآخرين على التعافي بينما أشار متبرع آخر وهو السيد عبد اللطيف نتكرم أنه تبرع بالبلازما على أمل إنقاذ حياة آخرين، داعيا جميع المرضى المتعافين الى القيام بالشيء نفسه.
