VCUarts Launches TinkerLab to Support Artists, Designers

Doha: Virginia Commonwealth University for arts (VCUarts) in Qatar launched “TinkerLab”, which will offer a new variety of tools for creatives -artists, designers, and innovators- from across the local education sector and the wider community, giving them a resource to turn to when inspiration strikes them.

VCUarts explained that the lab will offer a variety of tools that may not be currently available or accessible at the university, or elsewhere, creating a new shared space at VCUarts Qatar for those interested in creating and innovating with tools and equipment.

The university added that the TinkerLab will be open by appointment to the general public in addition to its own students, staff and faculty, which will enhance the art and design university’s commitment to promote hands-on engagement, exploration, and experimentation in creative practices among the local community.

VCUarts also pointed out that the inventory of tools and equipment supports work ranging from detailed, delicate work to more elaborate, experimental work, adding that examples of tools and equipment include, but are not limited to, handheld digital microscopes, a sewing machine, a desktop vacuum former, as well as a wide variety of cutting blades, precision tools, modeling tools, in addition to equipment for papermaking, dyeing, and biomaterial explorations that will also be available to experiment with.

The TinkerLab further supports additional forms of learning, experimentation, and production that may be cross-disciplinary and multi-faceted in nature.

Materials Library Curator and Assistant Professor at VCUarts Qatar Yasmeen Nabeel Suleiman said: “Our new space in the Materials Library with its well-stocked array of tools, means that the Materials Library expands beyond just showing off its incredible collection of material samples, to providing opportunities for designers to use those materials in creative research and experimentation.”

“Future plans include a series of activities that will serve to broaden the exposure, knowledge, and discussion of materials and making, among the VCUarts Qatar and wider communities,” she explained, adding that these include workshops and talks that will catalyze the TinkerLab and Material Library as learning tools, helping attendees benefit from the expertise of guest speakers who will be thoroughly selected.

وأوضحت /فرجينيا كومنولث/ أن المختبر المذكور، سيقدم مجموعة متنوعة من الأدوات الإبداعية التي قد لا تتوفر حاليا في أي مكان آخر، ليصبح بذلك مساحة مشتركة جديدة بالجامعة الشريكة لمؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، توفر عروضا حديثة بأجواء ملهمة للراغبين بالتدريب العملي واستخدام الأدوات والمعدات.

وقالت إن المختبر الجديد سيكون متاحا لاستخدام الجمهور، بالإضافة إلى الطلاب والموظفين وأعضاء هيئة التدريس في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث، بتحديد موعد مسبقا، ما يعزز التزام جامعة الفن والتصميم بدفع عجلة المشاركة العملية والاستكشاف والتجريب في الممارسات الإبداعية بين أفراد المجتمع المحلي.

وأشارت إلى أن الأدوات والمعدات المتوفرة في المختبر، تدعم العمل الذي يتراوح من التفصيلي الدقيق إلى التجريبي الأكثر تفصيلا، وبينت أن من هذه الأدوات والمعدات على سبيل المثال لا الحصر، المجاهر الرقمية المحمولة، وآلة الخياطة، وآلة التشكيل المكتبية، بجانب مجموعة متنوعة من شفرات القطع، والأدوات الدقيقة، وأدوات النمذجة، وغيرها من معدات صناعة الورق والصباغة واستكشافات المواد الحيوية التي ستكون متاحة أيضا لاستخدامها في أداء التجارب.

كما يدعم هذا المختبر أيضا أشكالا إضافية من التعلم والتجريب والإنتاج قد تكون متعددة التخصصات ومتعددة الأوجه بطبيعتها.

وقالت ياسمين نبيل سليمان، أمين مكتبة المواد والأستاذ المساعد في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث، “تعمل مساحتنا الجديدة في مكتبة المواد مع هذه التجهيزات الجديدة ومجموعة الأدوات التي تم توفيرها، على توسيع مكتبة المواد في الجامعة إلى ما هو أبعد من مجرد إظهار مجموعتها الرائعة من عينات المواد، وهي بذلك توفر فرصا للمصممين لاستخدام هذه المواد في البحث الإبداعي والتجريب”.

وأوضحت أن الخطط المستقبلية تتضمن عقد سلسلة من الأنشطة التي ستعمل على توسيع نطاق الاستكشاف والمعرفة ومناقشة المواد والصناعة لمجتمع جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث والمجتمع الأوسع، مشيرة إلى أن هذه الأنشطة تشمل العديد من ورش العمل والمحادثات التي ستدعم مختبر /تينكر لاب/ ومكتبة المواد كأدوات تعليمية، فضلا عن استفادة الحضور من خبرة المتحدثين المختارين بعناية.
