Trump responds to Colin Powell and holds him responsible for the Iraq war

US President Donald Trump has hit back at former Republican Secretary of State Colin Powell who said he will vote for Democrat Joe Biden in this year’s presidential election.
Powell said that the ongoing and widespread protests over the police killing of George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis, and Trump’s strongman approach to the national unrest is evidence of a growing opposition to his presidency.
“I think what we’re seeing now, this massive protest movement I have ever seen in my life, I think it suggests the country is getting wise to this and we’re not going to put up with it anymore,” Powell told CNN’s State of the Union program on Sunday.
It will be the second time former top army general Powell has snubbed Trump. Four years ago he voted for his Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton.
Powell told CNN that he is “very close to Joe Biden on a social matter and on a political matter,” adding: “I worked with him for 35, 40 years, and he is now the candidate and I will be voting for him.”
Trump swiftly lashed out on Twitter following the interview, calling Powell “a real stiff” and Biden “another stiff.”
The President also attacked Powell for his role in presenting US’ case against Iraq to the United Nations in 2003.
But Biden expressed his thanks to Powell in a tweet, saying, “This isn’t about politics. This is about the future of our country. Grateful for your support, Secretary Powell.”
Trump also played up his law and order image, tweeting that Biden was a “radical leftist” who would starve police forces of funding.
Sleepy Joe Biden and the Radical Left Democrats want to “DEFUND THE POLICE”. I want great and well paid LAW ENFORCEMENT. I want LAW & ORDER!” Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.
He went on: “Not only will Sleepy Joe Biden DEFUND THE POLICE, but he will DEFUND OUR MILITARY! He has no choice, the Dems are controlled by the Radical Left.”
Biden, who has been the presumptive Democratic nominee since Senator Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race in April, has earned enough delegates to officially secure the party’s nomination, CNN projected on Saturday.

شنّ الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب، الأحد، هجوما على وزير الخارجية الأسبق كولن باول، الذي قال إنه “سيصوت لجو بايدن في الانتخابات الرئاسية المقبلة”، وحمّله مسؤولية حرب العراق.
وبعد دقائق من إعلان “باول” دعمه لبايدن، غرّد ترامب قائلا: “كولن باول، متغطرس حقيقي.. كان مسؤولا عن إدخالنا في حروب الشرق الأوسط الكارثية، وقد أعلن لتوه أنه سيصوت لمتغطرس آخر، هو جو بايدن النعسان”.
وأضاف: “ألم يقل باول إن العراق امتلك أسلحة دمار شامل؟ العراق لم يمتلكها، لكننا خضنا الحرب!”.
وقال باول، الجنرال الجمهوري المتقاعد الذي كان على رأس الدبلوماسية الأمريكية في عهد الرئيس جورج بوش الابن، خلال مشاركته في برنامج “ستيت أوف ذي يونيون” على شبكة ” سي إن إن” الأمريكية، “لدينا دستور.. علينا أن نتّبع هذا الدستور.. والرئيس ترامب ابتعد عنه”.
ونوّه أنه سيصوت لبايدن، قائلا “لا أستطيع قطعا أن أدعم الرئيس ترامب هذا العام”.
وتأتي تصريحات باول، أول وزير للخارجية، وأول رئيس لهيئة الأركان المشتركة من أصول إفريقية، وسط تزايد عدد المسؤولين الرفيعين السابقين الذين يعبرون عن استيائهم إزاء نهج ترامب في التعامل مع الاحتجاجات التي اندلعت في أعقاب وفاة جورج فلويد.
وأعرب باول عن “فخره” إزاء عدد المسؤولين العسكريين السابقين والدبلوماسيين الذين انتقدوا رد ترامب على الاحتجاجات التي تخللتها أعمال نهب وتخريب.
وقال “أعتقد أن ما نراه الآن، هذه الحركة الاحتجاجية الأضخم التي أراها في حياتي، أعتقد أنها تشير إلى أن البلاد أصبحت أكثر حكمة بشأن هذا الأمر.. ولن نقبل ذلك بعد الآن”.
وطلب ترامب من عُمد الولايات الأمريكية استخدام القوة القصوى لقمع المظاهرات حتى لو تطلب الأمر إنزال الجيش إلى الطرقات للتعامل مع المحتجين، وهو ما رفضه المسؤولون الأمريكيون ومنهم وزير الدفاع، مارك إسبر.
وأسفر مقتل جورج فلويد في 25 مايو/ أيار الماضي، على يد شرطي أبيض في مدينة منيابوليس بولاية مينيسوتا (شمال)، عن ردود فعل غاضبة محليا ودوليا.
ومنذ مقتله، خرج عشرات الآلاف في مختلف دول العالم، وبالمدن الأمريكية في تظاهرات كبرى متحدين حظر التجول الذي فُرض في أكثر من ولاية.
