The death of U.S. citizen George Floyd continues to have serious repercussions in the United States, with a state of emergency declared in 25 cities and hundreds of protesters arrested, as President Trump denounced what is happening.
U.S. police have arrested nearly 1,400 people in 17 U.S. cities as protests continue, but the actual number of detainees is likely to be higher as protests continue Saturday night and Sunday morning, international news agencies reported, citing U.S. media.
On Twitter, videos of U.S. police running over protesters, some taking advantage of protests to loot apple and Gucci stores, and a video of the appearance of the famous movie character “Batman” mid the protests were published.
Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American citizen, took his last breath in Minnesota on Monday after a police officer put his knee on his neck for more than eight minutes.
A video documenting the crime was widely circulated, and the officer was later arrested and faces charges of third-degree murder.
California Governor Gavin Newsome declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles, saying he had allowed security reinforcements to arrive in the city after the protests intensified.
2,500 National Guard soldiers patrol the streets of a range of states.
According to CNN, a curfew has been declared in 25 cities in 16 states, most notably San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Colombia, Nashville and Seattle, and a night curfew in Kentucky.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday condemned the riots in Minneapolis on Friday night, saying that what the city witnessed was the work of “thugs and anarchists.”
“George Floyd’s death on the streets of Minneapolis is a serious tragedy,” Trump said in a press release at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, but added that Floyd’s memory was offended by “hooligans, thieves and anarchists,” calling for “reconciliation and justice, not hatred and chaos.”
According to CNN, protests are held in at least 30 cities, and protesters are demanding the trial of the other four police officers who were present at the time of Floyd’s death.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walls has already warned Minneapolis residents that they should expect more violence, calling on local residents to stay home so authorities can uncover what they believe are out-of-state instigators looking to spread “terror and destruction.”
Trump accused a group of protesters of being “extreme left-wing criminals,” accusing the Antifa network, a group that promotes armed chaos, of being behind the unrest sparked by Floyd’s death.
Last Friday night was one of the worst nights of civil unrest in decades, with cars and police stations burned down in New York, Dallas, Atlanta and elsewhere.

لا تزال وفاة المواطن الأمريكي جورج فلويد تثير تداعيات خطيرة في الولايات المتحدة، إذ تم إعلان حالة الطوارئ في 25 مدينة واعتقال المئات من المتظاهرين، في وقت ندّد فيه الرئيس ترامب بما يجري.
ونقلت وكالات الأنباء العالمية عن وسائل إعلام أمريكية، أن الشرطة الأمريكية ألقت القبض على ما يقرب من 1400 شخص في 17 مدينة أمريكية في الوقت الذي تستمر فيه الاحتجاجات ، لكن من المرجح أن يكون الرقم الفعلي للمعتقلين أكبر مع استمرار الاحتجاجات ليلة السبت وصباح الأحد.
وعلى تويتر، انتشرت فيديوهات لقيام الشرطة الأمريكية بدهس المتظاهرين، واستغلال البعض للمظاهرات وقيامهم بنهب متاجر آبل وجوتشي، كما انتشر فيديو لظهور الشخصية السينمائية الشهيرة “باتمان” في المظاهرات .
ولفظ فلويد، 46 عاماً، وهو مواطن أمريكي من أصول إفريقية، أنفاسه الأخيرة في ولاية مينيسوتا يوم الاثنين الماضي بعد أن وضع ضابط شرطة ركبته على عنقه لأكثر من ثماني دقائق.
وتم تداول شريط فيديو يوثق للجريمة على مدار واسع، وقد ألقي القبض لاحقاً على الضابط ويواجه اتهام بجريمة قتل من الدرجة الثالثة.
وأعلن حاكم كاليفورنيا، غافين نيوسوم عن حالة الطوارئ في لوس أنجلس، مؤكداً أنه سمح بوصول تعزيزات أمنية إلى المدينة بعد اشتداد وتيرة المظاهرات.
ويقوم 2500 جندي من الحرس الوطني بدوريات في شوارع مجموعة من الولايات.
وحسب شبكة سي أن أن، فقد تمّ إعلان حظر التجوال في 25 مدينة بـ 16 ولاية، ومن أبرز هذه المدن سان فرانسيسكوو أتلانتا وشيكاغو وفيلاديليفيا وكولومبيا وناشفيل وسياتل، كما فُرض حظر تجوّل ليلي في ولاية كنتاكي.
وندّد الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب السبت بأعمال الشغب التي شهدتها مينيابوليس ليل الجمعة، معتبراً أن ما شهدته هذه المدينة هو من صنع “لصوص وفوضويين”.
وتحدث ترامب في تصريحات صحفية بمركز كينيدي الفضائي في فلوريدا عن أن “وفاة جورج فلويد في شوارع مينيابوليس مأساة خطيرة”، لكنه أضاف أنّ ذكرى فلويد أساء إليها “مشاغبون ولصوص وفوضويّون”، داعيًا إلى “المصالحة والعدالة، وليس الكراهية والفوضى”.
وحسب شبكة سي أن أن، توجد الاحتجاجات في حوالي 30 مدينة على الأقل، ويطالب المحتجون بمحاكمة رجال الشرطة الأربعة الآخرين الذين كانوا حاضرين إبان وفاة فلويد.
وحذر حاكم ولاية مينيسوتا “تيم والز” بالفعل سكان مينيابوليس من أنهم يجب أن يتوقعوا المزيد من العنف، داعياً السكان المحليين إلى البقاء في منازلهم حتى تتمكن السلطات من كشف ما يعتقد أنهم محرضون من خارج الولاية يتطلعون إلى نشر “الإرهاب والدمار”.
وكان ترامب قد اتهم مجموعة من المتظاهرين بأنهم “مجرمين يساريين متطرفين”، متهماً شبكة “أنتيفا” وهي مجموعة تروج للفوضى المسلحة، بالوقوف وراء الاضطرابات التي أثارها مقتل فلويد.
وتعد ليلة الجمعة الماضية إحدى أسوأ ليالي الاضطرابات الأهليّة منذ عقود، إذ تمّ إحراق سيّارات ومراكز تابعة للشرطة في نيويورك ودالاس وأتلانتا وغيرها.
