Rate of COVID-19 infection in Qatar not high but realistic: Health minister

The rate of coronavirus infection in Qatar is not high, but reflects the true picture of what is happening, the Ministry of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohammed al Kuwari said in an televised interview on Thursday.

The number of cases in Qatar has gone up but that is only natural the minister told Al Jazeera, adding that it was the result of “very strong testing measures.”

“We are testing a lot in Qatar. We are testing approximately 40,000 per million. That is one of the highest rates of testing in the world and reflects a true picture on what is happening in terms of infection rates,” she added. 

“The rates are not high. They are realistic.”

The minister said 93 percent of identified COVID-19 cases in Qatar were mild, 5 percent are admitted in the hospital and only 1 percent end up in intensive care units.

“That is actually a good weight to have in the country because we are very active in seeking the cases — tracing them (contacts of the infected people), isolating them, quarantining them and therefore managing the situation much better.”

With around 19,000 positive COVID-19 cases and approximately 17,000 active cases, Qatar has the second highest number of confirmed cases in the Arab world. When these numbers are compared with the total population of the country, Qatar’s COVID-19 infection rate has surpassed countries like Spain, Italy and Germany. 

So, should people be worried? “No, they shouldn’t be,” Dr Kuwari affirmed.

When statistics are taken, small countries are at a disadvantage, she said, attributing Qatar’s relatively high number of cases per population when compared with that of large countries to increased testing in Qatar.

Large countries are unable to carry out as many tests as Qatar does, the minister said. 

“So, per population it looks like we have more cases (than large countries) but that does not mean they have this many cases. It means they haven’t reached not reached the level of testing per population (as Qatar does). You will see countries like Qatar, Luxemburg and Iceland have high number of cases per population but that is only because we are small and we test a lot,” she added.

قالت وزيرة الصحة العامة سعادة الدكتورة (حنان محمد الكواري) في مقابلة تلفزيونية يوم الخميس أن نسبة الإصابة بفيروس كورونا في قطر ليست مرتفعة، ولكنها تعكس الصورة الحقيقية لما يحدث على أرض الواقع.

صرحت الوزيرة ل(الجزيرة) أن عدد الإصابات في قطر ارتفع ولكنه أمر طبيعي للغاية مضيفةً أن ذلك كان نتيجة “إجراءات اختبار صارمة جداً.”

أضافت “نحن نجري الكثير من الاختبارات في قطر. نقوم بفحص ما يقارب 40 ألف شخص من كل مليون. ذلك واحد من بين أعلى معدلات الاختبار في العالم ويعكس صورة حقيقية لما يجري فيما يتعلق بنسبة الإصابات.”

“نسبة الإصابات ليست مرتفعة وإنما واقعية. “

قالت الوزيرة أن نسبة 93 بالمائة من حالات الإصابة بكوفيد-19 المسجلة كانت خفيفة، دخلت نسبة 5 بالمائة إلى المستشفى وانتهى الأمر بنسبة 1 بالمائة فقط في وحدات العناية المركزة.

“في الحقيقة أن تلك تعتبر نسبة جيدة في البلاد لأننا نبذل جهوداً حثيثة للوصول إلى الإصابات – تعقبها (المخالطين لمن تثبت إصابتهم)، عزلهم، وضعهم في الحجر الصحي وبذلك نقوم بالتعامل مع الموقف بشكل أفضل بكثير.”

بتسجيل 19,000 إصابة بكوفيد-19 لا يزال 17,000 منها نشط، تحتل قطر المرتبة الثانية بأعلى نسبة إصابات مؤكدة في العالم العربي. عند مقارنة هذه الأرقام بالتعداد السكاني الكلي في البلاد، نرى أن معدل الإصابة بكوفيد-19 في قطر قد تجاوز دول مثل إسبانيا، إيطاليا وألمانيا.

إذاً، هل يجب أن يسيطر القلق على الناس؟ أكدت الدكتورة (كواري) على أنه لا يجب أن يقلق الناس.

عند جمع الإحصائيات، فإن الدول الصغيرة تكون في وضع مجحف، وعزت عدد الإصابات المرتفع نسبياً بالنظر إلى التعداد السكاني الكلي في قطر عند مقارنته بعدد الإصابات في الدول الكبيرة إلى نسبة الفحوصات المتزايدة في قطر.

قالت الوزيرة أن الدول الكبيرة غير قادرة على إجراء فحوصات بالعدد الذي قامت به قطر. “لذلك يبدو أننا نعاني من عدد أكبر من الإصابات (من الدول الكبيرة) بالنظر إلى التعداد السكاني الكلي ولكن ذلك لا يعني أنهم يعانون من هذا العدد من الإصابات. معنى ذلك أنهم لم يصلو إلى نسبة إجراء الاختبارات مقارنة بعدد السكان (كما فعلت قطر). سترون أن دولاً مثل قطر، لوكسمبورج وايسلندا تعاني من عدد كبير من الإصابات بالنظر إلى التعداد السكاني ولكن يعود ذلك إلى أننا دولة صغيرة نجري الكثير من الاختبارات.
