Record number of endangered hawksbill turtles transferred to protected site

Department of Protection and Wildlife at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has affirmed that the conservation project of endangered hawksbill turtle is continuing well and all precautions needed has been taken for the safety of the project team.

This project, which began in 2003, is one most important projects of the Ministry in marine environment preservation, within the context of Qatar’s efforts to conserve endangered species.

During the past weeks the project saw an acceleration in nesting operations and record numbers were nested in comparison to same time previous years. 48 nests were transferred to the protected site in Fuwairet beach after taking the necessary measurements for turtles, cleaning them from snails and treating fatigue and wounds and returning them to the sea.

The turtle protection project is implemented under the supervision of MME and funded by Qatar Petroleum (QP), implemented by the Environmental Science Center of Qatar University in cooperation with a team from the Department of Protection and Wildlife, in which the north-eastern beaches in the country are covered including Ras Laffan Beach, Hawilah, Al Jassassiya, Marwah, Fuwairit, Al Gharia , Al-Mafeer, and the islands of Umm Tais and Ras Rukn.

أعلنت وزارة البلدية والبيئة -ممثلة بإدارة الحماية والحياة الفطرية- استمرار أعمال مشروع حماية السلاحف البحرية صقرية المنقار المهددة بالانقراض، بشكل جيد، وسط اتخاذ الاحتياطات كافة التي تضمن سلامة الفريق العامل بالمشروع.

وقد شهد العمل الميداني بالمشروع خلال الأسابيع الماضية تسارعاً في عمليات التعشيش وتحقيق أرقام قياسية مقارنة بالأعوام السابقة بالتاريخ نفسه.

وقد جرى نقل 48 عشاً إلى موقع الأعشاش المحمي بشاطئ فويرط، كما جرى أخذ القياسات اللازمة للسلاحف وتنظيفها من القواقع ومعالجة بعض الجروح بها، وجرت معالجة سلحفاتين من الإعياء وإرجاعها إلى البحر.

ويتم تنفيذ مشروع حماية السلاحف تحت إشراف وزارة البلدية والبيئة، وبتمويل من «قطر للبترول»، وتنفيذ مركز العلوم البيئية بجامعة قطر، بالتعاون مع فريق من إدارة الحماية والحياة الفطرية، ويجرى فيه تغطية الشواطئ الشمالية الشرقية بالدولة (شاطئ راس لفان، وحويلة، والجساسية، والمارونة، وفويرط، والغارية، المفير)، والجزر (أم تيس، وراس ركن).
