World history and culture to take centre stage at QNL in Nov

Qatar National Library (QNL) said yesterday that the public can engage in a diverse range of conversations about world history and culture in November.

On November 1, a special series – “Earth Talk” – will highlight the latest scientific evidence on climate change, and the importance of collaboration between government and communities in tackling climate woes. The event is being organised in partnership with the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar.

In collaboration with the French embassy in Qatar and the French Institute of Doha, QNL will host an exhibition entitled 1918: War is Over. Running from November 4 to 20, the exhibition which includes rare items from the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Dr Stuart Hamilton, deputy executive director of international relations and communications at QNL, said: “This November we look to the past and try to anticipate our future. By exploring the events that have shaped our world, we can draw important lessons for how we might shape our own paths, particularly in the face of critical issues such as climate change.”

To celebrate Arabic, Hispanic and French poetry, QBL invites everyone to take part in Poetry Night 2018 on November 16.

On November 18, in partnership with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the library will organise The World Through Picture Books, an exhibition showcasing a collection of children’s books from around the world, selected by librarians to represent their countries and regions.

Trainer Zainab al-Mahmoud from the Protection and Social Rehabilitation Centre (AMAN) will deliver two lectures to mark Universal Children’s Day on November 20. The lectures will encourage children and young adults to know their rights and stay safe in the community.

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will hold its monthly concert, entitled Mozart for Winds and Strings, at QNL on November 22.

The library will host Syria Under the French Mandate – 1918-1946, beginning on November 23. The exhibition, organised in co-operation with the Museum of Islamic Art, focuses on the period of the French Mandate in Syria from 1918-1946. The exhibition runs until April 30, 2019.

Dr Robert Ward, editorial director of the Economist Intelligence Unit, will provide insights into economic and political developments, as well as forecasts for various regions, in a talk at the library on November 25. Strategists, researchers, investors, students and anyone with an interest in the nexus between geopolitics and economics are encouraged to attend.

Qatar’s Little Builders: Bridging Communities, an exhibition featuring the world’s largest Lego bridge, will be held from November 27 to December 12. The activity is part of Qatar-British Festival 2018, which is a joint annual initiative of the British Council and the British embassy in Qatar.

As part of the Qatar-Russia Year of Culture 2018, the library will host an evening of Russian music on November 29. The event will include a recital by renowned Russian pianist Nina Ivanova, whose repertoire will include pieces by Tchaikovsky, Scriabin and Rachmaninoff. The choir Kamerton will also perform Russian folk songs.

Other key events taking place at QNL throughout November include the book launch of Western Higher Education in Global Contexts; How to Become a Social Media Influencer; Robotics Competition; and Talking About Illness: Why It Is Difficult and Why It Is Valuable. (QNA)

يحظى تاريخ العالم وثقافته بقسط وافر من الاهتمام في فعاليات مكتبة قطر الوطنية في شهر نوفمبر المقبل، وسوف تتاح الفرصة لروّاد المكتبة خلاله للمشاركة في مجموعة متنوعة من الفعاليات والمعارض والمحاضرات، التي تناقش وتعرض قضايا عالمية مهمة مثل البيئة والحرب والسلام.

وتسلّط محاضرة غدٍ الخميس -ضمن «سلسلة محاضرات حول البيئة والمناخ»- الضوء على أحدث الأدلة العلمية التي تؤكد التغير المناخي.

وتحتفي المكتبة بقيمة السلام ونبذ الحرب عبر استضافة «معرض نهاية الحرب 1918» بالشراكة مع السفارة الفرنسية في قطر والمعهد الفرنسي في الدوحة.

وللاحتفاء بالشعر العربي والإسباني والفرنسي، دعت المكتبة أفراد المجتمع كافة إلى المشاركة في الأمسية الشعرية في 16 نوفمبر المقبل.

وفي 18 نوفمبر، وبالشراكة مع الاتحاد الدولي لجمعيات ومؤسسات المكتبات «الإفلا»، تنظم المكتبة معرض «العالم من خلال الكتب المصورة»، ويسلّط الضوء على باقة من أفضل كتب الأطفال من شتى أنحاء العالم.

وفي إطار الاحتفال باليوم العالمي للطفل في 20 نوفمبر المقبل، تقدم الخبيرة التربوية زينب المحمود من مركز الحماية والتأهيل الاجتماعي «أمان» محاضرتين، لتشجيع الأطفال واليافعين على معرفة حقوقهم والحفاظ على سلامتهم وحمايتهم من أية أخطار.

وتستضيف المكتبة معرض «سوريا تحت الانتداب الفرنسي 1918-1946»، بالتعاون مع متحف الفن الإسلامي في قطر، ويستمر المعرض حتى 30 أبريل 2019.

ويقدم السيد روبرت وارد مدير التحرير بوحدة الإيكونوميست للمعلومات، محاضرة بالمكتبة يوم 25 نوفمبر المقبل عن معلومات تحليلية حول التطورات الاقتصادية والسياسية، ويعرض التوقعات الاقتصادية للمناطق المختلفة.

وفي إطار المهرجان البريطاني في قطر للعام 2018، تنظم المكتبة بالتعاون مع المجلس البريطاني والسفارة البريطانية في قطر، معرضاً بعنوان «مهندسو قطر الصغار: بناء الجسور بين المجتمعات» من 27 نوفمبر إلى 12 ديسمبر، ويضم المعرض أكبر جسر معلّق في العالم مصنوع من قطع الليجو.

كما تنظم المكتبة 29 نوفمبر المقبل، في إطار العام الثقافي «قطر – روسيا 2018»، «أمسية الموسيقى الكلاسيكية والتقليدية الروسية»، بالتعاون مع المركز الدولي للموسيقى في الدوحة.;
