Doha: The Haitian authorities announced that the heavily armed commando unit that assassinated the country’s president, Jovenel Moise, yesterday, includes 26 people from Colombia and two Americans of Haitian origin.
As the hunt for the masterminds of the attack continues, 15 Colombians and two Americans have been arrested, while three attackers have been killed and eight are still on the run, Haitian police said at a press conference last night.
Charles Leon, Haiti’s police chief, displayed 17 men, a number of Colombian passports, guns, knives and radios, saying, “Foreigners came to our country to kill the President”. “They were 26 Colombia, identified by their passports and two Americans of Haitian origin.
Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano said in a statement that preliminary information indicated that the Colombians involved in the attack were retired members of the army. His country would cooperate in the investigation.
President Moise, who took office in 2017, was shot dead at his home early Wednesday morning by what Haitian officials described as a “group of trained foreign assassins,” without indicating any motive for the assassination so far.
In a related context, Haiti’s minister in charge of elections, Matthias Pierre, said the presidential election process and constitutional referendum scheduled for September 26th before the president’s assassination will proceed as scheduled.

وكان الرئيس مويس الذي تولى منصبه في العام 2017، قد اغتيل رميا بالرصاص في منزله في ساعة مبكرة من صباح أمس الأول /الأربعاء/ على يد من وصفهم المسؤولون الهايتيون بأنهم “مجموعة من القتلة الأجانب المدربين”، دون أن يشيروا إلى أي دافع للقتل حتى الآن.
وفي سياق ذي صلة، أكد السيد ماتياس بيير الوزير المسؤول عن الانتخابات في هايتي، أن عملية الانتخابات الرئاسية والاستفتاء على الدستور التي كانت مقررة في 26 سبتمبر المقبل قبل اغتيال الرئيس، ستمضي قدما في موعدها طبقا لما هو مقرر.
