Can’t find a hand sanitizer? Don’t worry … here’s a way to make it yourself

Properly scrubbing your hands is one of the best ways to stop the spread of germs and viruses, and to ensure you don’t get sick yourself. But if you don’t have access to soap and clean water, or if you’re out and about and nowhere near a sink, you should carry hand sanitizer to protect your health.

As you’re no doubt aware, bottles of hand sanitizer (Purell, Wet Ones, and the like) sell out quickly during public health crises. But don’t worry—making your own hand sanitizer is remarkably easy. You just have to be careful you don’t mess it up. Make sure that the tools you use for mixing are properly sanitized; otherwise you could contaminate the whole thing. Also, the World Health Organization recommends letting your concoction sit for a minimum of 72 hours after you’re done. That way the sanitizer has time to kill any bacteria that might have been introduced during the mixing process.

(Note: To reiterate, nothing beats washing your hands. Hand sanitizer—even the real, professionally made stuff—should always be a last resort.)

We actually have two recipes for you, and links to find the ingredients. The first is one you can make with stuff you likely already have in your cabinets and under the sink, so it’s effective in emergency situations. The second recipe is more complex, but easy to make if you have the opportunity to do some shopping and planning ahead of time.

You’re going to need some alcohol. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, your sanitizer mix must be at least 60 percent alcohol to be effective. But it’s better to get way above that. A bottle of 99 percent isopropyl alcohol is the best thing to use. Your regular vodka and whiskey are too wimpy and won’t cut it.

• Isopropyl alcohol
• Aloe vera gel 
• Tea tree oil 

Mix 3 parts isopropyl alcohol to 1 part aloe vera gel. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to give it a pleasant scent and to align your chakras.

• Isopropyl alcohol 
• Glycerol or glycerin
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Distilled water
• Spray bottle

The aloe mixture gets the job done, but aloe also leaves your skin annoyingly sticky. So, here’s a recipe that’s less sticky and more potent, based on the mix recommended by the WHO.

Mix 1 ⅔ cups alcohol with 2 teaspoons of glycerol. You can buy jugs of glycerol online, and it’s an important ingredient because it keeps the alcohol from drying out your hands. If you can’t find glycerol, proceed with the rest of the recipe anyway and just remember to moisturize your hands after applying the sanitizer.

Mix in 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, then another ¼ cup of distilled or boiled (then cooled) water. (If you’re working with a lower-concentration solution of rubbing alcohol, use far less water; remember, at least ⅔ of your final mixture has to be alcohol.)

Load the solution into spray bottles—this isn’t a gel, it’s a spray. You can wet a paper towel with it as well and use that as a wipe.

If you must, you can add in a splash of essential oil to your concoction to make it smell nice. Just don’t use lavender. Everyone else uses lavender, and your sanitizer is superior.

ولكن لا داع للقلق فمع ندرة الجل القاتل للجراثيم ، أصدرت منظمة الصحة العالمية  وصفة مطهرة يدوية محلية الصنع في  صيغتين بقواعد كحول مختلفة في حالة عدم توفر أحدهما.

وقد يكون لديك جميع المكونات التي تحتاجها لصنعها بنفسك في المنزل أو في معظم محلات التجزئة ومخازن الأدوية. إذا لم تتمكن من العثور عليها هناك ، فجرّب متاجر مستلزمات المكاتب ومتاجر تحسين المنزل.

فإليك  كل ما تحتاج إليه لصنع مطهر يدين مضاد للجراثيم والبكتيريا

المكوّنات

2/3 كوب من مطهّرات الأيزوبروبيل(كحول بنسبة 99 في المائة)  أو الإيثانول : هذه المطهّرات هي المكوّن الأساسي في معقم اليدين، وهي تحتوي على مواد مضادة للبكتيريا والجراثيم، ما يساعد في تنظيف البشرة جيداً والتخلّص من كل الميكروبات العالقة. 

1/3 كوب من جل الألوفيرا: يمكن أن تساعد الألوفيرا على منع نمو بعض أنواع البكتيريا التي يمكن أن تسبّب العدوى، وذلك بفضل احتوائها على مواد مضادة للأكسدة ومواد مضادة للميكروبات.

يمكن إضافة الزيوت الأساسية إليه.مثل الخزامي، القرفة أو النعناع حيث  تتمتّع الزيوت الأساسية بخصائص مضادة للجراثيم والبكتيريا، كما أنها تعمل على تنعيم اليدين ومنحها رائحة طيّبة. 

طريقة التحضير

تخلط هذه المكوّنات معاً، وتحفظ في زجاجة معقمة لاستخدامها  عند الحاجة. 

أما دليل  منظمة الصحة العالمية الرسمي لصنع معقم اليدين، فهو  مخصص للسكان الذين ليست لديهم مياه نظيفة أو غيرها من المنتجات الطبية، وإذا صُنعت بشكل صحيح، فقد يكون هذا المطهر مفيداً وفعالاً. لكن في حال الخطأ فقد يكون ضاراً كما أنه مخصص لتركيب كميات كبيرة .

وفيما يلي المواد اللازمة لصنع 10 لتر من المعقم اليدوي :

8333 مل من إيثانول 96%   أو 7515 مل من كحول أيزوپروپيل 99,8 %

 417 مل من بيروكسيد الهيدروجين 3% 

145 مل من الجليسيرول 98% 

الماء المعقم البارد المقطر أو المغلي

الطريقة:

يُسكب الكحول المستخدم في التركيبة في عبوة كبيرة  حتى الكمية  المدرجة.

يضاف بيروكسيد الهيدروجين باستخدام اسطوانة القياس.

3- يضاف الجليسيرول باستخدام اسطوانة القياس، ونظرا إلى أن الجليسيرول شديد اللزوجة ويلتصق بجدار أسطوانة القياس، يجب بالتالي غسله ببعض الماء المعقم البارد المقطر أو المغلي ثم تفريغه في العبوة / الخزان.

4- يتم ملأ العبوة/ الخزان حتى علامة 10 لتر بالماء المعقم البارد المقطر أو المغلي

5- يتم وضع الغطاء أو الغطاء اللولبي على الخزان/ العبوة في أسرع وقت ممكن بعد التحضير من أجل منع التبخر.

6- -يخلط المحلول عن طريق الهز بلطف  أو باستخدام مجداف

. 7- -يقسم المحلول فورا ويوضع في عبواته النهائية مثل عبوات بلاستيكية بسعة 500 أو 100 مل، ثم يتم وضع العبوات في الحجر الصحي لمدة 72 ساعة قبل الاستخدام. وهذا يتيح الوقت للقضاء على أي جراثيم موجودة في الكحول أو العبوات الجديدة/المعاد استخدامها.

يبقى أن نذكر بأن منظمة الصحة العالمية أكدت أن أكثر الطرق فعالية لمنع انتشار فيروس “كورونا” تتمثل في غسل اليدين جيدا لمدة 20 ثانية، بشكل متكرر خلال اليوم. وفي حال عدم توفر المياه، ينبغي استبدالها بمطهر لليدين يحتوي على كحول بنسبة تصل إلى 60 في المائة.
