QNL’s lecture explores history of Indian communities in Gulf
المكتبة الوطنية تحتضن محاضرة حول تاريخ الجاليات الهندية في الخليج
DOHA: A fascinating insight into the little-known history of Indian communities in the Gulf was provided in a lecture at Qatar National Library on January 15, as part of the Qatar-India 2019 Year of Culture.
Delivered by the Library’s Director of Historical Research and Partnerships, Dr James Onley, the lecture highlighted the earliest evidence of their presence in the region approximately 4,600 years ago and explored their continuous existence in the region.
After the talk, participants enjoyed a guided tour of the ‘Qatar, India & the Gulf’ exhibition at the Library, which opened last October and will run until the end of February.
Attendee Gerd Nonneman, Professor of International Relations and Gulf Studies at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar, said: “I have always been interested in the connectedness of the Gulf with the wider world around it, particularly with the Indian Ocean space. The lecture was very informative and supported by thorough research, which showed how strong the connection between the present-day Gulf region and India was during the pre-oil period.”
كشفت محاضرة -أقيمت في مكتبة قطر الوطنية يوم 15 يناير الحالي ضمن فعاليات العام الثقافي «قطر- الهند 2019»- عن بعض البيانات التاريخية المثيرة للاهتمام حول تواجد الجاليات الهندية في منطقة الخليج.
وسلّطت المحاضرة -التي ألقاها الدكتور جيمس أونلي مدير شؤون البحوث التاريخية والشراكات بالمكتبة- الضوء على بدء تواجد الجاليات الهندية في الخليج منذ حوالي 4600 سنة.
وبعد المحاضرة، استمتع المشاركون بجولة في معرض «قطر والهند والخليج»، الذي افتتح في المكتبة في أكتوبر الماضي، ويستمر حتى نهاية فبراير.
حول المحاضرة، علق جيرد نونيمان -أستاذ العلاقات الدولية ودراسات الخليج في جامعة جورجتاون- كلية الشؤون الدولية في قطر، الذي كان من بين المشاركين- بقوله: «لطالما كنت مهتماً بالصلات التي تربط منطقة الخليج مع العالم من حوله، لا سيما الدول المجاورة في منطقة المحيط الهندي، وقد كانت المحاضرة ثرية بالمعلومات، وزودتني بالكثير من الحقائق المدعومة بالأبحاث الشاملة حول العلاقات الوطيدة بين منطقة الخليج في الوقت الحالي والهند في فترة ما قبل اكتشاف النفط».
