Inauguration of the “Al Maha Going Ahead,” mural at Katara
تدشين جدارية «المها تمضي قدماً» في «كتارا»
Doha: A colossal two-storey hyper-realisitic mural of an Arabian oryx bursting out of a wall was unveiled yesterday at Katara Cultural Village, adding to Katara’s ever-growing collection of must-see public art pieces.
The 11-metre wall painting was created by internationally acclaimed Argentine muralist Martin Ron known for his large inspirational murals found in different cities around the world that exude realistic feeling at the same time include fantasy segments that inspire people.
“I’m a muralist who travels around the world to paint murals by invitation from different organizations, and it’s my first time in Doha,” Ron told local media at yesterday’s unveiling of his latest work.
The mural, which features the oryx – an iconic symbol of heritage in Qatar – with Doha’s scenic skyline in the backdrop was inspired by the strength of the country and its people, said Ron. “When I came here, I discovered a very strong city, which is growing fast and has seen huge development, and Qataris who are very strong people,” he said, adding he hoped to come back to Qatar in the future.
Speaking to reporters, Carlos Hernandez, Ambassador of Argentina to Qatar, said “Martin Ron is a top muralist in Argentina and one of the top ten muralists in the world, so you can find his artworks in many cities like Moscow and London. We are very proud of him because he is the first Argentine artist to set foot in Qatar.”
The Ambassador was grateful to PallasArts who brought Ron to Qatar for a project it is working with the embassy which would benefit children in need in Argentina, as well as to Katara for asking the artist to do the mural.
Aside from trade and investment, Hernandez said the embassy is also focusing on sports, culture and education, which are “very important issues that stay for a long time between people.”
The Argentine ambassador and Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara jointly unveiled the mural in the presence of a number of ambassadors and heads of missions along with Doha’s art community.
Commenting on the new mural, Al Sulaiti stressed that Katara continues to invest in its new buildings and projects to support the arts, adding that this mural was the fruit of cooperation between Katara and the Embassy of Argentina.
He said Ron’s large-scale artwork was the third mural on Katara’s new buildings through which they wanted to offer diverse artistic styles by artists from other countries as well which enrich their aesthetic and cultural dimension.
Titled “Al Maha Going Ahead,” the mural can be seen at Katara Building 40.

دشن سعادة الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي المدير العام للمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي «كتارا»، عصر أمس، جدارية بعنوان «المها تمضي قدما» للفنان الأرجنتيني مارتن رون، وذلك بحضور سعادة السيد كارلوس البيرتو هيرنانديز سفير جمهورية الأرجنتين، وعدد من أصحاب السعادة السفراء ورؤساء البعثات الدبلوماسية والإعلاميين والمهتمين. وبهذه المناسبة، قال المدير العام لكتارا: تستمر «كتارا» في استثمار مبانيها ومشروعاتها الجديدة لدعم الفنون بطريقة جميلة ومبتكرة، مضيفاً: هذه الجدارية هي ثمرة تعاون بين الحي الثقافي «كتارا» وسفارة دولة الأرجنتين، وأشار إلى أن الفنان اختار أن يرمز للبيئة القطرية من خلال حيوان المها الأكثر تواجداً وشهرة في قطر.
قال السليطي: هذه هي الجدارية الثالثة في مباني التوسعة الجديدة، والتي أردنا من خلالها أن ننوع ونطرح مدارس وأنماطاً فنية جديدة لفنانين غير قطريين محافظين على روح الأصالة القطرية، مؤكداً أن كل هذه الأعمال تثري «كتارا» جمالياً وثقافياً وتعطيها بعداً فنياً عالمياً.
من جهته، قال سعادة السفير الأرجنتيني: «كتارا» صرح ثقافي عالمي بكل المقاييس، وذلك بما تقدمه من فعاليات وأنشطة تسمح للجميع بالتعرف على ثقافات بعضهم البعض، وتقرب المسافات وتمد جسور التواصل بين الشعوب. وأضاف: الفنان مارتن يعد من أشهر عشرة فنانين في العالم، وقد قدم رسومات في عدد من المدن العالمية مثل لندن وموسكو وغيرهما. وجاءت الفرصة لتقديم بصمته الفنية في قطر من خلال «كتارا» التي نقدم لها كل الشكر على ما تقدمه من مجهود كبير في خدمة الفن والثقافة. بدوره قال الفنان مارتن رون: عندما زرت قطر أدهشتني قوتها وسرعة التطور فيها على مختلف الأصعدة، ومن هنا اخترت موضوع الجدارية لأعبر عن الأصالة والمعاصرة التي رأيتها. وأضاف قائلاً: الجدارية على ارتفاع 11 متراً، واستغرقت 5 أيام لتنفيذها، وكنت سعيداً وأنا أرسمها وأتمنى أن يكون هناك مزيد من الأعمال مستقبلاً.
جدير بالذكر أن مارتن رون هو فنان شارع من بيونس أيرس، وهو متخصص بعمل جداريات كبيرة ملهمة. تتميز أعماله بإعطاء الشعور الواقعي، وفي الوقت نفسه تحتوي أعماله على صور خيالية ملهمة فعلاً، هو معروف بأصالة أعماله وقد شارك بالعديد من المسابقات والمهرجانات حول العالم.
