11 artists display watercolour works at Al Markhiya Gallery

١١ فناناً يعرضون أعمالاً بالألوان المائية في معرض المرخية

After the success of its first-ever Charcoal and Ink exhibition, Al Markhiya Gallery is showcasing a collection of the most recent works by Qatari and locally based Arab artists using watercolour as medium.

Twenty-two paintings by 11 artists, showcasing their fluency and exceptional skill in a medium considered one of the most difficult to master, are on display at the show which opened on Tuesday at Katara Art Centre.

The artworks exhibited delve into varying themes but share one thing in common: they were all created using watercolour, which to some artists can be an unforgiving and unpredictable  medium to work with.

Autodidact Qatari artist Mubarak Al Thani, who is one of the featured artists at the latest edition of Al Matkhiya’s “40 Minus” exhibition at Doha Fire Station, displays paintings which bear the characteristic bright colours, geometric abstraction and literal expressionism unique in his works.

Abdularahman Al Mutawah, on the other hand, digs deep into local culture with his portraiture of two batoola-wearing women, while Al Mouaz Al Ojami depicts stunning scenes from Sudan in his paintings.

The themes are as diverse as the artists’ style. Mohammed Jenaid illustrates the real beauty of Arabian horses while May Al Mannai creates fantastic scenes and Shuaa Ali goes abstract.

The exhibition also features works by  Ali Dasmal Al Kuwari, Asma Al Mannai, Fatma Al Naemi, Hissa Al Muftah, and Salem Mathkour, who each created two artworks in any theme of their choice.

Doha’s oldest privately owned art gallery, Al Markhiya Gallery continues its mission in promoting, exhibiting and selling Qatari and Arab contemporary art by holding signature shows which have become a staple in Doha’s vibrant art scene including “40 Minus,” “50×50” and “Summer Collection,” among others.

The exhibition is on show at Katara Art Centre Building 5 until March 5.
