UN expert: Business entities will find themselves in a difficult dilemma

Businesses that recognise the need to tackle climate change are positioning themselves for success, while “the writing is on the wall” for those that do not, a United Nations climate change expert has warned while speaking at Qatar Foundation (QF).
Ovais Sarmad, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), drove home the message that taking action to combat the environmental crisis facing our planet cannot be delayed, in a public lecture as part of QF’s Education City Speaker Series.
He told the audience that rather than harming economies and jobs, companies that adopt more sustainable business models are set to reap the benefits while also helping to preserve the planet – but businesses that fail to do this “will not be around for long”. Sarmad’s talk at Qatar National Library, titled ‘Why Are We Waiting? The Urgency For Tackling The Climate Crisis’, also emphasized the need for fossil fuels to form part of the solution to climate change, and the transition to more renewable forms of energy. “In taking climate action, there can be a fear that people will suffer because it will create a negative economic impact,” Sarmad said.
“The truth could not be further removed. Businesses that are preparing right now for more sustainable economic growth, who are reducing their emissions and working toward carbon neutrality, will thrive. For those who do not, the writing is on the wall. Nobody can do business in a world decimated by climate change, and it’s baffling to me that businesses do not see the advantages of adapting more sustainable business models.
“Those businesses that do this will position themselves for the future; those that do not will not be around for long.
Sarmad said that making the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable growth path could boost the global economy by US$26 trillion, and create 65 million new jobs in the low-carbon industry, by 2030. But he also stressed that fossil fuels will not, and cannot, simply be eradicated.
“Fossil fuels have literally fueled the prosperity of this region, and they are not going to disappear overnight,” he said. “That is unrealistic – it would lead to the collapse of the global economy. “They will be around for the foreseeable future, so they need to be converted into being part of the solution, through a process of transition that also recognizes the needs of employees within this sector.”
During his talk, Sarmad also spoke of how education is essential to addressing existential societal challenges such as climate change, saying: “Without education at the grassroots level, anything else we do is merely a bandage.” The talk was followed by a question-and-answer session with Sarmad, the latest global expert to share his insights and perspectives at the Education City Speaker Series.
حذّر السيد أوفيس سرمد نائب الأمين التنفيذي لاتفاقية الأمم المتحدة الإطارية بشأن تغيّر المناخ، من أن الشركات والكيانات التجارية التي تدرك الحاجة إلى معالجة تغيّر المناخ تضع نفسها على طريق النجاح، في حين أن الكيانات التجارية والشركات التي تتغافل عن الاستدامة بوصفها حاجة ملحّة ستجد نفسها في مأزق صعب. وجّه السيد أوفيس سرمد رسالة دعا فيها إلى عدم تأخير اتخاذ إجراءات لمكافحة الأزمة البيئية التي تواجه كوكب الأرض. كلام سرمد جاء في محاضرة مفتوحة للجمهور، عُقدت بالمدينة التعليمية في مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، ضمن سلسلة محاضرات المدينة التعليمية.
شارك الخبير الأممي الحضور بآرائه قائلاً: «من أجل تجنّب الأضرار التي تطال الاقتصاد والوظائف، فإن الشركات والكيانات التجارية التي تعتمد نماذج أعمال أكثر استدامة تحقق فوائد جمة، كما أنها تساعد في الوقت نفسه في الجهود الدولية للحفاظ على كوكبنا. في حين أن أولئك الذين يغفلون عن هذه الحاجة من المرجح ألا يتمكنوا من البقاء لوقت طويل». وقد انعقدت المحاضرة بعنوان «ماذا ننتظر؟ الحاجة الملحّة لمعالجة أزمة المناخ»، وسُلّط الضوء خلالها على الحلول الواقعية التي تساهم في معالجة أزمة تغيّر المناخ، حيث أكد الخبير الأممي على أهمية «الوقود الأحفوري كجزء من الحل في عملية الانتقال إلى الطاقة المتجددة بمختلف أشكالها».
كما قال: «لا يمكننا أن نتجنّب الحقيقة أو نمحوها، حيث إنه غالباً ما يتكون انطباع لدى الناس بالخوف عند
اتخاذ أي إجراءات بشأن المناخ؛ لأن
ذلك سيؤدي باعتقادهم إلى آثار
سلبية على الاقتصاد».
وأوضح أن الشركات والكيانات التجارية التي تستعد الآن لتحقيق النمو الاقتصادي المستدام وتعمل على خفض انبعاثاتها وتمضي قدماً في محايدة الكربون، ستزدهر. في حين أن أولئك الذين لا يقومون بذلك سيواجهون بالتأكيد صعوبات ستضعهم في مأزق.
وأضاف أنه لا أحد يستطيع إنجاز الأعمال التجارية في عالم يهلكه تغيّر المناخ، وأجد نفسي في حيرة من أمري تجاه الشركات والكيانات التجارية التي لم تتمكن حتى الآن من إدراك أهمية التكيّف والاستفادة من مزايا اعتماد نماذج أعمال أكثر استدامة. إن الشركات والكيانات التجارية التي تقوم بذلك تحجز مكاناً لنفسها في المستقبل، بينما أولئك الذين ينصرفون عن ذلك لن يتمكنوا من البقاء لفترة طويلة من الزمن.
وفي أرقام لافتة، أشار المتحدث الأممي إلى أن «الانتقال إلى مرحلة المسار المستدام بالاعتماد على الكربون المنخفض، سيساهم في تعزيز الاقتصاد العالمي بمبلغ قدره 26 تريليون دولار، وسيؤدي إلى استحداث 65 مليون وظيفة جديدة في مجال صناعة الكربون المنخفض بحلول عام 2030»؛ لكنه شدّد أيضاً على أنه «لا يمكن القضاء على الوقود الأحفوري ببساطة»، موضّحاً أن «الوقود الأحفوري لطالما كان سبباً أساسياً لازدهار المنطقة، ولن يختفي بين عشية وضحاها؛ فهذا أمر غير واقعي؛ لأنه سيؤدي إلى انهيار الاقتصاد العالمي».
وأضاف سرمد أن الوقود الأحفوري سيبقى حاضراً في المستقبل المنظور؛ لكنه يجب أن يكون جزءاً من الحل، من خلال عملية انتقال ندرك فيها أهمية الحاجة إلى موظفين في هذا القطاع.
نُظّمت المحاضرة بالتعاون مع فريق حركة الشباب العربي للمناخ في قطر، وهي منصة تمكّن الشباب في قطر من التعاون معاً لتعزيز إجراءات حماية البيئة، وزيادة الوعي بقضايا تغيّر المناخ، وتشجيع خيارات اتباع نمط حياة مستدام، ضمن سلسلة حوارات الأرض الخاصة بها.
