Qatar supports rehabilitation, reconstruction efforts in hurricane-hit Bahamas Islands

On behalf of the State of Qatar, the Qatar Fund for Development has responded urgently to the recent Hurricane Dorian disaster by supporting reconstruction projects and providing immediate support to hurricane victims.

The hurricane caused severe damage and destruction to hospitals and health centers, resulting in insufficient resources to absorb the growing number of wounded people.

At present, it is difficult to accurately quantify the damage, as access to the affected areas is challenging after roads have been closed due to debris and infrastructure destruction, causing severe difficulties in accessing the necessary supplies, Qatar Fund for Development said in a statement.

The State of Qatar will provide its support based on the ongoing needs assessment by the Bahamas Government.

Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas and caused severe damage to the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, leaving at least 43 deaths and more than 30,000 people affected, including the destruction of 13,000 homes in the island of Abaco alone. It is expected that the numbers of affected people by this disaster will increase in the coming days.

The State of Qatar expressed its deepest condolences to the Government and the people of the Bahamas following the horrific destruction caused by Hurricane ‘Dorian’, and wished a speedy recovery.

استجابت دولة قطر -ممثلة بصندوق قطر للتنمية- بشكل عاجل لكارثة الإعصار «دوريان» الذي ضرب جزر البهاما مؤخراً، من خلال دعم مشاريع إعادة البناء وتوفير الدعم الفوري لضحايا الإعصار.

وتسبب الإعصار بأضرار بالغة في المستشفيات والمراكز الصحية، مما ترتب عليه عدم كفاية الموارد المتاحة لاستيعاب الأعداد المتزايدة من الجرحى. وأوضح صندوق قطر للتنمية، في بيان له أمس، أنه من الصعب في الوقت الحالي حصر الأضرار التي وقعت بشكل دقيق، نظراً لصعوبة الوصول إلى المناطق المتضررة بعد تعرض الطرقات للإغلاق بسبب الحطام وتهدم البنية التحتية، مما سبب صعوبات شديدة لوصول الإمدادات الضرورية، وستقوم دولة قطر بتقديم دعمها بناءً على تقييم الاحتياجات المستمرة من جانب حكومة جزر البهاما.

وأضاف البيان: «تعرب دولة قطر عن بالغ تعازيها لحكومة وشعب البهاما إثر الدمار المروع الذي تعرضت له البلاد بعد اجتياح إعصار «دوريان» المنطقة وتتمنى الشفاء العاجل للجرحى».
