HMC team successfully performs seven lifesaving transplants in just five days

Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC’s) transplant and organ donation teams recently performed six lifesaving kidney transplants and one liver transplant over five days.

The organs for the record number of transplant operations came from four live, related donors and one deceased donor. The seven transplant patients represent residents from seven different nationalities — Qatari, Syrian, Bangladeshi, Tunisian, Yemeni, Filipino and Egyptian.

The achievement was marked by a special event held at HMC last week, gathering together the clinical and support teams and their families.

Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Medical Director of Hamad General Hospital and Director of the Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation (QCOT), said the successful outcome of the 12 procedures is a testimony to the teamwork, resourcefulness, and expertise of the organ donation and transplant teams.

“This team includes doctors, transplant coordinators, nurses, and support staff from different specialties across HMC, including surgery, nephrology, anesthesia, critical care, radiology, and laboratory,” said Dr. Al Maslamani.

“The result was six successful kidney transplants and one liver transplant — all life-changing procedures for our patients. We wish them all good health, and for the deceased donor, a blessing in heaven — whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely,” added Dr Al Maslamani.

One of the donors, a Bangladeshi national who is currently studying in Canada, flew to Doha so he could donate a kidney to his father – a resident of Qatar.

“Every single patient is treated with importance and with world-class pre- and post-operative care provided by the nursing and transplant teams,” said the donor.

Dr Abdulla Al Ansari, Acting Chief Medical Officer, expressed his pride in the high standard, quality, and safety of care provided by the teams involved.

“The outcomes of our organ donation and transplantation programs are comparable with the best international standards. This could not have been achieved without the direct support, leadership, and encouragement of Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health,” said Dr Al Ansari.

Dr. Hassan Al Malki, Head of HMC’s Nephrology Department, said patients requiring transplant surgeries no longer need to look outside Qatar.

“HMC offers an excellent standard of care and the positive outcomes of transplant surgeries performed in the country encourages us to advice the public to have their surgeries and follow-up care here in Qatar. Here in Qatar they will receive safe, effective, and compassionate care and can avoid going abroad for the unknown,” said Dr. Al Malki.

Dr. Riadh Fadhil, Director of the Qatar Organ Donation Center (Hiba), added that Qatar has a successful and world-recognised organ donation programme.

“We are so glad that the number of donated organs so far in 2019 has outnumbered that of last year. Our model of organ donation – with a single unified waiting list – has become known for its efficiency, equity, and respect of human dignity. We are proud that it has become a model emulated by other nations,” said Dr Fadhil.

أجرى فريق زراعة الأعضاء في مؤسسة حمد الطبية، مؤخراً، ست عمليات زرع كلى وعملية واحدة لزرع الكبد خلال 5 أيام، لإنقاذ حياة مرضى كانوا بحاجة ماسّة إلى هذه الأعضاء. وقد تم التبرّع بالأعضاء لهذا العدد الكبير من عمليات الزراعة من قِبل أربعة من المتبرّعين الأحياء من أقرباء المرضى، في حين تم الحصول على باقي الأعضاء من متبرّع متوفى، حيث زُرعت هذه الأعضاء لمرضى من سبع جنسيات مختلفة (القطرية، والسورية، والبنغالية، والتونسية، واليمنية، والفلبينية، والمصرية).

واحتُفل بهذا الإنجاز الكبير خلال احتفالية خاصة أُقيمت في أحد مرافق مؤسسة حمد الطبية، الأسبوع الماضي، بحضور عدد من الكوادر الطبية والكوادر المساندة وأفراد أسرهم.

وثمّن الدكتور يوسف المسلماني المدير الطبي لمستشفى حمد العام ومدير مركز قطر لزراعة الأعضاء، هذا الإنجاز، وأرجع السبب في نجاح عمليات استئصال الأعضاء من المتبرّعين وزرعها لدى المرضى -التي بلغ مجموعها اثنتي عشرة عملية- إلى العمل بروح الفريق الواحد، والخبرة والكفاءة التي تتمتع بها الفرق الطبية المتخصصة التي قامت بإجراء هذه العمليات.

من جانبه، عبّر الدكتور عبدالله الأنصاري الرئيس الطبي بالوكالة لمؤسسة حمد الطبية، عن اعتزازه بمستوى جودة وسلامة الرعاية الصحية التي قدّمها الفريق الذي أجرى عمليات زراعة الأعضاء، وقال: «تضاهي نتائج عمليات برامج زراعة الأعضاء في قطر مثيلاتها العالمية من حيث المعايير. وما كان ذلك ليتحقق لولا الدعم المباشر واللامحدود الذي تتلقّاه هذه البرامج من قِبل سعادة الدكتورة حنان محمد الكواري وزير الصحة العامة».

وأشار الدكتور حسن المالكي رئيس قسم أمراض الكلي في مؤسسة حمد الطبية، إلى أنه لا حاجة للمرضى إلى السفر خارج دولة قطر لإجراء عمليات زراعة للأعضاء لديهم. وقال: «تقدّم مؤسسة حمد الطبية مستوى عالياً من الرعاية الصحية. والنتائج الإيجابية لعمليات زراعة الأعضاء التي تُجرى في قطر تُعدّ حافزاً للمرضى كافة لإجراء عمليات زراعة الأعضاء والمتابعة الطبية لمرحلة ما بعد زراعة الأعضاء هنا في قطر».

من جهته، أشار الدكتور رياض فاضل مدير مركز قطر للتبرع بالأعضاء (هبة)، إلى أن برنامج قطر للتبرع بالأعضاء يُعدّ من أنجح البرامج المشهود لها عالمياً. وقال: «لقد سرّنا أن عدد الأعضاء المتبرّع بها حتى اليوم من العام 2019 قد فاق العدد الذي سُجّل العام الماضي. وقد أصبح النموذج القطري للتبرع بالأعضاء -الذي يتميّز بقائمة انتظار موحّدة للمرضى كافة المحتاجين إلى زراعة الأعضاء- نموذجاً عالمياً يُحتذى به من حيث الفعالية وتكافؤ الفرص واحترام الكرامة الإنسانية».
