Ashghal project wins Gold Award for second time
مشروع أشغال يفوز بالجائزة الذهبية للمرة الثانية
For the second year in a row, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal)’s Doha South Sewage Infrastructure Project has received the Gold Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
The award acknowledges the project’s “continued outstanding occupational health and safety performance during the year 2018, in addition to adopting the best risk management practices effective in all aspects of the project implementation”, Ashghal has said in a statement.
The award was received by Khalid Maher al-Qatami, head of Treatment Plants and the TSE Network Projects Section at Ashghal, during a ceremony held in Glasgow, Scotland.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of Jacobs Engineering Group (formerly CH2M), the international management consultant for the project.
“The award for this project for the second consecutive year is tangible proof of Ashghal’s continuous efforts in the field of occupational health and safety to ensure that all projects are safely implemented.
“It is a result of the constant high performance achieved by this project since its commencement, through adopting a successful strategy in this field as well as the commitment of all those involved in the project starting from Ashghal, the management and supervision consultant, the contractor, to the construction workers on site,” the statement noted.
The strong safety performance and alignment is supported by a “committed leadership team, weekly HSE (health, safety and environment) site tours, ongoing positive work relationships and collaborative dialogue between the project’s supervisors and contractors, and those who are authorised to step in and stop unsafe works on-site”.
Ashghal has completed the construction works of the Main Trunk Sewer (MTS) as part of the Doha South Sewage Infrastructure Project.
The MTS consists of three segments: Eastern, Northern, and Western, with a total length of approximately 16km.
The project also comprises approximately 24km of lateral sewer tunnels, which are being completed using 170 shafts at different locations within Doha South.
These lateral sewers will convey sewage flows from the centre and south of Doha to the three segments of the MTS, which in turn will convey these flows to the existing Doha South Sewage Treatment Plant through a 40m-deep foul sewerage pumping station.
An important feature of the project is that the MTS will reduce the environmental impacts by fully controlling the odours at the sewage treatment works and conveying system, and reduce other environmental problems arising from sewage overflow due to excess hydraulic pressure on the existing drainage network, where sewage flows exceed its absorptive capacity.
The project is designed to serve areas in the south of Doha and the expected population growth, and can be linked to future infrastructure projects.
Once completed, the project will enable the decommissioning of more than 20 old pumping stations currently located in the residential and commercial areas in the south of Doha, the statement adds.

وحاز المشروع على الجائزة إثر تحقيقه أعلى المعدلات في الحفاظ على الصحة والسلامة في مواقع العمل عام 2018، بالإضافة إلى تبني أفضل ممارسات إدارة المخاطر الفعّالة في كافة جوانب تنفيذ المشروع.
وتم تسلم الجائزة ضمن احتفالية أقيمت في مدينة غلاسكو، في المملكة المتحدة.
وذكرت /أشغال/ أن حصول المشروع على هذه الجائزة الهامة للسنة الثانية على التوالي يعد دليلاً ملموساً على الجهود الدؤوبة التي تبذلها في مجال الصحة والسلامة المهنية لضمان تنفيذ الأعمال بجميع مشاريعها بأمان، معتبرة أن الجائزة جاءت نتيجة للأداء العالي والمستمر الذي يحققه المشروع منذ البدء بتنفيذه من خلال تبني استراتيجية ناجحة في مجال الصحة والسلامة المهنية والتزام كافة القائمين على المشروع بدءا من /أشغال/ واستشاري الإدارة والإشراف ومقاول التنفيذ وصولاً إلى عمال البناء في الموقع.
وكانت /أشغال/ قد انتهت من أعمال إنشاء نفق الصرف الصحي الرئيسي كجزء من مشروع تطوير البنية التحتية للصرف الصحي في جنوب الدوحة ، حيث يتكون النفق الرئيسي من ثلاثة أجزاء شرقي وغربي وشمالي بطول إجمالي يبلغ حوالي 16 كيلومترا.
كما يتكون المشروع من أنفاق الصرف الصحي الفرعية بطول 24 كيلومترا تقريباً والتي يتم إنشاؤها من خلال 170 مدخلاً في مناطق مختلفة في جنوب الدوحة، وستقوم هذه الانفاق الفرعية بنقل مياه الصرف الصحي من مناطق وسط وجنوب الدوحة إلى الأجزاء الثلاثة من النفق الرئيسي، والتي بدورها ستقوم بنقل مياه الصرف الصحي إلى محطة معالجة مياه الصرف الصحي في جنوب الدوحة، وذلك من خلال محطة الضخ النهائية والتي هي بعمق 40 مترا.
ومن المزايا الهامة للمشروع أن نفق الصرف الصحي الرئيسي والذي يعمل بالجاذبية سيحد من المشاكل البيئية من خلال السيطرة الكاملة على الروائح في محطة معالجة مياه الصرف ونظام النقل، وكذلك الحدّ من المشاكل البيئية الناتجة عن فيضان مياه الصرف الصحي والتي تحدث بسبب الضغط الهيدروليكي الكبير الواقع على شبكة الصرف الصحي الحالية، حيث تفوق تدفقات الصرف الصحي قدرتها الاستيعابية.
وقد تم تصميم المشروع ليخدم منطقة جنوب الدوحة والنمو السكاني المتوقع لها، كما يمكن ربطه بمشاريع بنية تحتية مستقبلية.. وسيتم عند اكتمال المشروع الاستغناء عن أكثر من عشرين محطة ضخ قديمة موجودة حالياً في المناطق السكنية والتجارية في جنوب الدوحة.
