GU-Q celebrates achievements of IEDM programme cohort
«جورجتاون» تحتفي بخريجي الماجستير التنفيذي الدولي
Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) celebrated the achievements of the second cohort of the International Executive Master’s in Emergency & Disaster Management (IEDM) degree programme with guests from across Qatar and the world.
This year’s IEDM cohort represents a wide variety of sectors and professionals from across Qatar and other nations from ministerial officials to medical directors to army and police professionals, as well as crisis communicators, and IT and telecom specialists. They share a driving desire to ensure the safety and security of their nations and their people in times of crisis.
Keynote speaker HE Dr Abdulla al-Thani, adviser, Amiri Diwan, noted, “Today we celebrate the academic achievement of these outstanding graduates of Georgetown University, in the critical field of emergency and disaster management, which is essential to the security of Qatar and societies worldwide. I am confident the graduates will play a leading role as stewards of our collective safety, whether in government, the private sector, or nonprofit organisations.”
The 24 graduating students presented their capstone projects in a gallery walk prior to the graduation ceremony. The projects showcased the students’ in-depth research and analysis on improving emergency preparedness in Qatar and around the world in areas such as the national emergency health system, the use of car parks as emergency shelters, enhancing the chemical hazards framework on construction sites, and food security.
Kelly Otter, dean of the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies, which administers the programme, also spoke to the gathering. “Our graduating students join a powerful network of Georgetown alumni who are excelling in their organisations. As communities across the globe entrust their public safety to these graduates, we have every confidence in their abilities,” she said.
Several students were singled out for academic excellence and contributions to the community. Farukh Mohamed Azad, manager of Digital Transformation at Ooredoo, received the IEDM Ambassador Award and Dr Salih al-Marri, senior adviser to the Ministry of Health, received the Outstanding Community Engagement Award. Dr Hassan al-Thani, head of Trauma and Vascular Surgery Sections at Hamad Medical Corporation, was selected for the Outstanding Capstone Impact Award for his project on “Crisis Surge Capacity and Mitigation Plan Based on Real-Time Trauma Registry Data.”
Welcoming its third cohort in September 2019, the IEDM programme helps the next generation of global leaders prepare for and respond to a wide variety of natural, technological, and man-made disasters. The programme offers a blend of virtual learning and five on-site international residencies in five different countries that provide critical hands-on experience and engagement opportunities with leading experts in the field.
احتفت جامعة جورجتاون في قطر بإنجازات الدفعة الثانية من خريجي برنامج الماجستير التنفيذي الدولي في إدارة الطوارئ والكوارث. وتضم دفعة هذا العام طيفاً واسعاً من القطاعات والمهن الاحترافية من داخل قطر وخارجها، بمن فيهم مسؤولون وزاريون، ومديرو دوائر صحية، وكوادر في الجيش والشرطة، وأعضاء فِرق الاتصال الخاصة بالأزمات، واختصاصيون في تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات.
يجمع بين هؤلاء الرغبة في تأمين السلامة والأمن لبلدانهم وشعوبهم في أوقات الأزمات.
وقال سعادة الدكتور عبدالله آل ثاني، المستشار في الديوان الأميري، في الكلمة الرئيسية خلال الحفل: «نحتفي اليوم بالإنجاز الأكاديمي لخريجين متميزين من جامعة جورجتاون في قطاع بالغ الحساسية هو إدارة الطوارئ والكوارث، والتي تعدّ ركيزة أساسية من ركائز الأمن في دولة قطر وسائر بلدان العالم. وأعرب عن ثقته بأن الخريجين سوف يقومون بدور رائد في صون أمن وسلامة الجميع، عبر مواقعهم في الوزارات أو مؤسسات القطاع الخاص أو المؤسسات غير الربحية». قدم الخريجون البالغ عددهم 24 طالباً مشاريعهم الختامية في معرض لمشاريع التخرج أثار اهتمام الضيوف قبل بدء الحفل.
وأبرزت تلك المشاريع عمق البحث والتحليل الذي قام به الطلاب بشأن تحسين الاستعداد لحالات الطوارئ في قطر، وحول العالم في مجالات، مثل نظام الصحة الوطني للطوارئ، واستخدام مواقف السيارات كملاجئ للطوارئ، وتعزيز إطار الوقاية من المخاطر الكيميائية في مواقع البناء، وقضايا الأمن الغذائي. وأشادت الدكتورة كيلي أوتر، عميدة كلية الدراسات المتواصلة بجامعة جورجتاون، المشرفة على هذا البرنامج، بجهود الخريجين ومشاريعهم النهائية وقالت: «ينضم خريجونا الجدد إلى شبكة قوية مترامية الأطراف من خريجي جورجتاون يعملون بكفاءة في مؤسساتهم». وقد جرى اختيار العديد من الطلاب الخريجين للتميز الأكاديمي والمساهمات في المجتمع. فقد حصل فاروق محمد آزاد، مدير التحول الرقمي في مؤسسة «ooredoo» للاتصالات، على جائزة سفير البرنامج، وحصل الدكتور صالح المري، كبير مستشاري وزارة الصحة على جائزة المشاركة المجتمعية المتميزة، كما تم اختيار الدكتور حسن آل ثاني رئيس قسم الصدمات وجراحة الأوعية الدموية في مؤسسة حمد الطبية لجائزة «أفضل تأثير للمشروع الختامي» عن مشروعه حول «قدرة استيعاب الأزمات المتصاعدة وخطة التخفيف من تبعاتها بناءً على بيانات سجل واقعي للصدمات». ومع الترحيب بدفعته الثالثة في سبتمبر 2019، يواصل برنامج الماجستير الدولي في إدارة الطوارئ والكوارث مساهمته في صقل مهارات الجيل القادم من القادة العالميين، وقدراتهم على الاستعداد والتحسب لنطاق واسع من الكوارث الطبيعية والتكنولوجية، والتي من صنع الإنسان، والتعامل معها. ويقدم البرنامج مزيجاً من الفصول الدراسية عبر الإنترنت، إضافة إلى خمس وحدات ميدانية دولية مقيمة في مواقع مختارة بعناية في خمس دول مختلفة، تقدم تجربة عملية مباشرة، وفرصاً للاحتكاك والمشاركة، مع كبار الخبراء في هذا المجال.
