2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Is The Sane Car For Insane Times
Just when it seems the automotive industry has lost its way with ridiculous horsepower or a crossover for every countryman, a simple car emerges. For over 50 years, this car has been the Toyota Corolla.
Often derided by enthusiasts as appliances, the no-frills commuter car gets the vast majority of consumers where they want to go in the manner they want to get there, safely and at a value. The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid does it even better.
Exhibit A that the automotive industry has gotten a little nuts: the average transaction price for a new vehicle is more than $37,000, according to Kelley Blue Book. Easy to blame the automakers in this era of no accountability but we are the ones paying those large prices for large vehicles loaded with stuff we don’t use all that much.
For just under $23,000, the Corolla Hybrid puts every dollar to functional use.
Even though it rides on a new platform, the Corolla Hybrid blends in unremarkably like a ballcap at a baseball game. On closer inspection, the Hybrid gets blue accents around the badging, 15-inch wheels with low resistance tires, and it looks more composed than the youthful outgoing model that tried too hard to be different. The Fu Manchu front fascia is more streamlined and less angry, and the whole look is smoother front to back. But still, the only time the four-door compact turns heads is when it makes that whir-whir-whir lunar landing gear sound when creeping at low speeds or in reverse in EV mode.
The first-ever Corolla Hybrid in the US is built on Toyota’s two decades of success with hybrid powertrains. It uses the same Hybrid Synergy Drive as the current Prius, with two motors and an efficient 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine. Total output with the fixed ratio transmission is 121 horsepower to the front wheels. The system uses exhaust heat to warm engine coolant and get the engine heated quicker. The cabin heats quicker, too, which could be significant for cold-weather consumers wary of the cold range loss in a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle.
In Sport mode it doesn’t drag as much as the Prius. Expecting nothing, it has a surprising bit of pop. More importantly, it is rated at 53 mpg city, 52 mpg combined, same as hybrid versions of the Honda Insight, Toyota Camry and even the Prius. For traditional hybrids without a plug, the Corolla Hybrid trails only the Hyundai Ioniq’s 58 mpg.
Around town, with the electronically controlled brake set in the drive mode, the Corolla averaged more than 57 mpg in our week around town. Setting EV mode helps conserve energy under low throttle up to about 20 mph, and then again at cruising speeds of about 40 mph, as long as there is enough charge in the battery.
The battery is located under the rear seat, so you don’t lose much cargo room. 60/40 rear seats fold flat for an even load floor. Rear seat room is sufficient enough to fit two teens, and overall it felt roomy enough for a family of four.
The only trim in the Hybrid comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with automatic emergency braking, lane centering, adaptive cruise control that works both at highway cruising speeds and in commuter traffic from 24 mph down to a stop. It also comes with the eight-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay, and a seven-inch cluster display to stay competitive.
Priced at only $3,000 more than the Corolla sedan and $1,200 less than a similarly equipped Honda Insight (EX trim), the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is the perfectly practical, remarkably reasonable around-town car.
