Huawei becomes second largest smartphone brand

The Chinese electronics brand Huawei overtook Apple to claim the second spot in global smartphone sales during the first quarter of 2019. Though Huawei has achieved this feat earlier in 2017 too but the brand wasn’t able to cement its position. This year though, Huawei has seemingly cemented the spot with 59.1 million units shipped and 19 percent market share, only behind Korean giant Samsung.

According to IDC, this quarter’s results are a clear sign that 2019 will be another down year for worldwide smartphone shipments. The only highlight from a vendor perspective was Huawei, which made a strong statement by growing volume and share despite market headwinds.

Despite every smartphone brand’s volumes sinking, Huawei emerged out as the only successful brand with enhanced sales and market share.

“The overall smartphone market continues to be challenged in almost all areas, yet Huawei was able to grow shipments by 50%, not only signifying a clear number two in terms of market share but also closing the gap on the market leader Samsung. This new ranking of Samsung, Huawei, and Apple is very likely what we’ll see when 2019 is all said and done,” said Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers.

Earlier this year Huawei’s Consumer Business Group CEO told Reuters that they aim to become the world’s largest smartphone seller by either in late 2019 or early 2020.

Though Samsung’s shipment volumes dropped eight percent from 78 million phones in Q1 2018 to this year’s first quarter, it still gives Samsung around 23 percent market share. But, Huawei’s tremendous success in the past few quarters clearly depicts that Huawei is now within striking distance of Samsung at the top of the global market.

In China, Huawei continued its positive momentum with a well-rounded portfolio targeting all segments from low to high. Huawei’s high-end models continued to create a strong affiliation for the mid to low-end models, which are supporting the company’s overall shipment performance.

Contrary to Huawei’s achievements in 2019’s first quarter, Cupertino based Apple faced the most challenging quarter as shipments dropped to 36.4 million units, a monstrous fall of 30 percent compared to more than 52 million shipped in Q1 2018.

ونجحت هواوي في زيادة حصتها بوتيرة ثابتة على حساب شركتي سامسونج وأبل لا سيما في قطاع الأجهزة المحمولة باهظة الثمن، وبخاصة في أسواقها المحلية بالصين.

ونقلت بلومبرج عن ريان ريث المسؤول بمؤسسة (أي. دي. سي) قوله إن «سوق الهواتف المحمولة بشكل إجمالي ما زال يواجه تحديات في شتى المجالات، غير أن هواوي استطاعت زيادة مبيعاتها بنسبة 50%»، مضيفاً أن «هذا الترتيب الجديد لسامسونج وهواوي وأبل يظل مرجحاً للغاية عندما ينتهي عام 2019».
