AJ+ receives prestigious 2019 media awards in the US

Doha: AJ+ was honoured with a Shorty Award in the Instructional Video category, and a People’s Voice Award at the 2019 Webby Awards, in the category of Social Video on Food and Drink, for its video Dumpster Diving Reveals US Food Waste Crisis, an episode of AJ+’s show In Real Life.

Yara Elmjouie, Presenter and producer of the show, and Tabish Talib, co-producer, received the Shorty and Webby Awards on May 5 and May 13, respectively, in New York City. Both US- based awards are among the leading international recognitions honouring excellence on the Internet and social media.

The video is part of In Real Life’s first season, a show that explores the intersection of food and social justice through experiential journalism. This award-winning episode takes the audience into a journey of dumpster diving to show how much good food is wasted in New York City and what can be done about it.

“We are thrilled and humbled for our show, In Real Life, to be recognised by two of the most prestigious awards in the world of digital content creation,” said Yara Elmjouie.

“It’s a testament not only to the tireless work of my dedicated colleagues, but also the ethos of permissiveness and experimentation that animates so much of what we do at AJ+. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of my team,” added Yara Elmjouie.

Dumpster Diving Reveals US Food Waste Crisis has racked up more than 600k views on YouTube and 11M on Facebook.

“At AJ+ we are always exploring and building talent. Yara started with us in San Francisco as a junior newsroom producer,” said Dima Khatib, Managing Director of AJ+ channels.

“He had an idea and was extremely motivated. I am so happy to see that we helped him reach his potential this fast”, expressed Dima Khatib.

At the Shorty Awards, AJ+ beat channels E! Entertainment and Nickelodeon. The ceremony was held on May 5, in New York City.

At the Webby’s, which took place on May 13, also in New York City, it beat fellow nominees Viceland – the new TV channel from Vice— and food publisher Twisted.

In Real Life was also nominated for the 2019 James Beard Foundation Broadcast Media Awards, in the category of Outstanding Reporting, for its episode Why You MUST Try Native American Cuisine. The James Beard Broadcast Media Award honours the best content showcasing authenticity and diversity in and out of the kitchen.

وتسلّم كلٌ من معد ومقدم البرنامج يارا المجوي ومنتجه طابيش طالب الجائزتيْن في نيويورك في 5 و13 مايو. وتعتبر الجائزتان من الجوائز الدولية المرموقة التي تكرم المحتوى المتميز على الإنترنت ومنصات التواصل الاجتماعي.

وكان الفيديو الفائز ضمن أول موسم من برنامج “في الحياة الحقيقية” الذي يستكشف العلاقة المتداخلة بين الطعام والعدالة الاجتماعية من خلال مقاربة صحفية تجريبية. وتأخذ الحلقة الفائزة الجمهور في رحلة عبر مكبات القمامة لتُبرز الكمّ الكبير المُهدر من الطعام الجيد في نيويورك وتقترح حلولاً لهذه الظاهرة.

وقد علق مُعد ومقدم البرنامج يارا المجوي قائلاً: “نشعر بالإطراء والسعادة الغامرة إزاء تكريم برنامجنا باثنتين من أهم الجوائز في عالم إنتاج المحتوى الرقمي. ولا يدل هذا على الجهود المضنية التي يبذلها زملائي فحسب، بل أيضاً على الروح التجريبية والمنفتحة التي تقود الكثير من عملنا في AJ+. ما كان لأي من هذا أن يحصل لولا الالتزام الذي يظهره فريقنا”.

وكان الفيديو المُتوَّج قد حصد 11 مليون مشاهدة على فيسبوك و600 ألف مشاهدة على يوتيوب.

وحول هذا التكريم قالت مديرة قنوات AJ+ ديمة الخطيب: “نحن دائماً نستكشف وننمّي المواهب في AJ+. لقد بدأ يارا معنا في سان فرانسيسكو صحفياً مبتدئاً في غرفة الأخبار. اقترح فكرة برنامج وكان في غاية الحماس لتحقيقها، وأنا مسرورة جداً بأننا دعمناه ليحقق ذاته ويتميز بهذه السرعة”.

وقد تفوقت AJ+ على ناشرين مرموقين كانوا مرشحين للجوائز مثل تلفزيوني “إي إنترتينمنت” و”نيكلوديون” في حفل جوائز شورتي الذي أقيم في 5 مايو بمدينة نيويورك وتفوقت كذلك على “فايس لاند”، القناة التلفزيونية التابعة لمؤسسة “فايس”، و”تويستد”، التي تتخصص في النشر في مجال الطعام والشراب، خلال حفل جوائز “ويبي” المنظّم في 13 مايو بنيويورك.

يذكر أن البرنامج الذي نال الجائزتيْن المذكورتيْن كان قد رُشح هذا العام أيضاً لجوائز هيئة جيمس بيرد في فئة التقارير المتميزة، وذلك عن حلقة تناولت مطبخ الشعوب الأمريكية الأصلية. وتكرم هذه الجائزة أفضل محتوى إعلامي يبرز الأصالة والتنوع في مجال الطبخ وغيره.
