Exhibition breathes new life into ancient art of Kyrgyz embroidery

«كتارا» تمدّ جسر الفن إلى قيرغيزستان بمعرض «بوز جول»

Doha: More than the intricate layering of fabrics and interplay of colourful patterns, the ancient art of Kyrgyz embroidery dating centuries back tell stories of a nomadic people rich in heritage which can be gleaned through a new exhibition which opened at Katara Cultural Village on Wednesday.

“As nomadic people, we didn’t write books or rules in ancient times but through signs using embroidery to tell our stories; that’s why embroidery is unique and important for us, and now we believe this really needs to be shown to the world through these exhibitions,” Kyrgyz designer Yntymak Abdyldaev told The Peninsula.

Before coming to Qatar, the exhibition had already travelled to the US and many European and Asian countries, and organizers hope it will continue “to create cultural bridges” in more countries.

The exhibition is aptly titled “Boz Jol” which, in Kyrgyz language refers to a symbolic representation of the world duality, where there is space for the choice of the path-the only true path to which a person goes his whole life. It features 24 pieces from the hundreds in the collection of “Saimaluu Tash” Art Gallery, whose name originates from a petrogyph site in Jalal-Abad province of Kyrgyzstan famous for its thousands of carved pictures on rocks dating back from early 2000 to 3000 BC.

All handmade, Kyrgyz embroidery is a laborious process where making one piece can take from several months to years, said Abdyldaev, adding that the oldest in the collection on display dates back 150 years ago.

From geometric to floral patterns and other forms derived from nature such as birds and animals, motifs on embroidered wall hangings (tush-kiis) displayed in homes have meanings and sometimes spiritual significance.

For instance, the composition of a family like the number of sons and daughters can be seen on one of the pieces used to be displayed at the entrance of a house, while another piece indicates figures to ward off evil.

Some of the pieces remain unfinished to indicate that life continues even after the artisan dies since they are passed on to the next generation as heirlooms.

While the exhibition is one of the steps Saimaluu Tash Art Gallery is taking to promote traditional Kyrgyz embroidery, the gallery also produces wall carpets and patchwork panels using old traditional techniques, some of which are shown and incorporated in the exhibition, thus breathing new life into it and passing it to new generation.

Presented by Katara and the Kyrgyzstan Embassy, the exhibition was opened by Ahmed Al Sayyed, Deputy General Manager of Katara who stressed that the exhibition was very impressive and represented the Kyrgyz culture and rich heritage.

The exhibition is open to the public until April 16 at Katara Building 19 Gallery 1.
