Four Qatari artists to create public art pieces for new museum

Doha: Qatar Museums (QM) yesterday announced that four Qatari artists have created commissioned pieces that will be displayed inside the new National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) as part of QM’s vast Public Art Programme.

The announcement provides further insight into the way the NMoQ will tell the story of Qatar’s past, present and future through an immersive, multilayered experience.

The Museum’s exhibition galleries and public spaces include a multitude of personal histories and interpretations of Qatari identity, among which are pieces by some of the country’s brightest artistic talents. The commissioned artworks will play a central role in this by offering unique perspectives on treasured Qatari traditions and the life of the Qatari people.

Following an extensive search, Qatari artists Aisha Nasser Al Sowaidi, Ali Hassan, Bouthayna Al Muftah and Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani were chosen based on their body of work and artistic vision.

Each one has taken personal histories and memories to create site-specific pieces that will connect visitors to the story of Qatar and its people in unexpected ways.

Sheikha Amna bint Abul Aziz Al Thani, Director of the National Museum of Qatar, said: “It is important to us to use the opening of the new National Museum, which embodies our heritage and gives voice to our aspirations, to showcase the work of our local artists. Each of their extraordinary creations is a unique and moving contribution to the breathtaking experience that the museum offers.”

Welcoming visitors inside the NMoQ is a wall installation by the Qatari artist Ali Hassan, Wisdom of a Nation, which draws on the image of the Qatari flag with an excerpt from a poem by the founder of modern-day Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammad Al Thani. Standing before the entrance to the permanent galleries is a large-scale sculpture, Motherland, by Qatari artist Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani, which evokes the connections between the land, motherhood and national identity.

Within the VIP Lounge, visitors will encounter a work by Aisha Nasser Al Sowaidi, Central Midkhan, which takes the idea of a traditional and local ritual and transforms it into a global concept of home systems. Al Sowaidi is a graduate of the prestigious Fire Station: Artist in Residence programme and participant in the internationally-acclaimed Contemporary Art Qatar exhibitions.

Bouthayna Al Muftah, one of Qatar’s most popular emerging artists, called on the heritage of Qatari jewelry to create her installation, Kan Ya Ma Kaan, which is located in the café named after the work, Café 875. The work takes inspiration from traditional Qatari jewelry and “Thahab” or 875 gold (21 karat). The installation has been designed to complement the museum’s contemporary architecture.

A number of international artists have also been commissioned to develop site-specific works for the NMoQ. Standing outside of the NMoQ near the historic Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani is a sculptural group by French artist Roch Vandromme, which evokes the long history of nomadic lifestyle and trade.

Set to open to the public on March 28, 2019, the immersive and experiential museum will be organised in three “chapters” — Beginnings, Life in Qatar, and Building the Nation — presented in eleven galleries.

The visitor’s chronological journey, which extends through more than 1.5 km of experiences, will start in the geological period long before the peninsula was inhabited by humans and continues to the present day.

أعلنت متاحف قطر اليوم، عن إضافة أعمال فنية جديدة لمتحف قطر الوطني من إبداع 4 فنانين قطريين صمموها خصيصًا للعرض في المتحف.

وجاء تنفيذ الأعمال الجديدة ضمن برنامج الفن العام في متاحف قطر، ويشارك من خلالها الفنانون في رواية قصة قطر في الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل، حيث تلقي أعمالهم الضوء على عادات قطرية أصيلة وتكشف جانبا من حياة الشعب القطري، لتنضم بذلك إلى العديد من أعمال أبرز الفنانين القطريين الموجودة بصالات المتحف وساحاته العامة والتي تتوقف هي الأخرى عند لحظات مهمة في التاريخ القطري وتتناول موضوعات تتعلق بالهوية القطرية.

والفنانون الأربعة هم عائشة ناصر السويدي، علي حسن، بثينة المفتاح، والشيخ حسن بن محمد آل ثاني. وجرى اختيارهم جميعا – بعد بحثٍ مكثَّف – نظرًا لتميّز أعمالهم ورؤاهم الفنية، إذ استلهم كل فنان في عمله أحداثًا تاريخية وذكريات شخصية ليُخرج في النهاية منتجا إبداعيا يتماشى مع مضمون متحف قطر الوطني، كاشفا من خلاله للزائرين جانبا من قصة قطر وحياة شعبها بطريقة مبتكرة.

وقالت سعادة الشيخة آمنة بنت عبدالعزيز آل ثاني، مديرة متحف قطر الوطني في تصريح بالمناسبة، إن متحف قطر الوطني ذاكرة لتراثنا ومنبر للتعبير عن طموحاتنا، ولا يوجد مناسبة أفضل من افتتاح المتحف لإبراز إبداعات الفنانين القطريين. منوهة إلى أن كل عمل من أعمالهم البديعة له طابع مميز يخاطب الوجدان، ومن ثم يمثل إضافة ثرية لتجربة المتحف التي تأسر الألباب.

ويرتفع العمل الفني الذي أبدعه الفنان القطري علي حسن بعنوان /حكمة أمة/ على جدار داخلي بالمتحف، مرحبًّا بالزائرين. وفي هذا العمل، يستولي العلم القطري على المشهد، مصحوبا ببيت شعري للشيخ جاسم بن محمد بن ثاني، مؤسس قطر الحديثة.

وأمام مدخل صالات العرض الدائمة، تقف منحوتة الفنان القطري الشيخ حسن بن محمد آل ثاني، وهي منحوتة من الحجم الكبير بعنوان /الوطن الأم/ تبرز العلاقة بين الأرض والوطن الأم والهوية الوطنية.

أما الفنانة عائشة السويدي فأبدعت عملا فنيا بعنوان /سنترال مِدخَن/ يزيّن صالة كبار الزوار، وهو عمل استوحت فكرته من عادة قطرية واستطاعت تحويل هذه العادة إلى مفهوم عالمي يمكن تطبيقه في البيوت.

إلى ذلك، يوجد العمل الفني الموسوم بـ/كان يا مكان/ للفنانة بثينة المفتاح، إحدى أشهر الفنانات القطريات الواعدات. ويوجد عملها في مقهى المتحف /875/، وهو عمل مستوحى من المجوهرات القطرية التقليدية والذهب عيار 21 قيراط، وينسجم هذا العمل الفني مع اللمسات المعمارية العصرية في المتحف.

وعلى صعيد آخر، تم تكليف عدد من الفنانين الدوليين أيضًا لتصميم أعمال مخصصة للعرض في متحف قطر الوطني، ومنهم الفنان الفرنسي روش فاندروم الذي أبدع مجموعة من المنحوتات المستوحاة من نمط الحياة البدوية والتجارة قديما، وتوجَد هذه الأعمال بالقرب من القصر التاريخي للشيخ عبدالله بن جاسم في قلب المتحف. إلى جانب منحوتة الفنان سيمون فتال الواقعة في الممر المؤدي لمدخل المتحف والمستلهَمة من النقوش الصخرية المكتشفة في منطقة الجساسية في قطر، ومنحوتة للفنان العراقي أحمد البحراني، كما يوجد عمل فني أيضا للفنان الفرنسي جان ميشيل أوثونيل يقدم فيه عشرات النوافير التي صُمِمت على نحو يحاكي أشكال الخط العربي برشاقته المعهودة.

ويروي متحف قطر الوطني التفاعلي الذي سيفتح أبوابه رسميًا يوم 28 مارس المقبل، فصول قصة قطر منذ قديم الأزل حتى اليوم، وينقسم متحف قطر الوطني إلى ثلاثة أقسام وهي: البدايات، والحياة في قطر، وبناء الأمة. وتعرض محتويات هذه الأقسام في 11 قاعة عرض، حيث ينطلق الزائر في رحلة زمنية يقطع خلالها مسافة 1.5 كلم، يبدأها مع الحقبة الجيولوجية قبل استيطان الجزيرة العربية، ثم ينتقل من محطة لأخرى عبر التاريخ وصولا إلى وقتنا الحالي. وتعتمد هذه القاعات في نقل قصصها على مزيج تفاعلي فريد من العناصر، منها الموسيقى والمرويات التاريخية والصور الأرشيفية والأعمال الفنية وسماع الحكايات والروائح المرتبطة بالذكريات والمخطوطات والمجوهرات والأزياء.
