Will the earthquake that struck Gulf cause a tsunami?

Doha: Following rumors on social media of the possibility of tsunamis in the Gulf region, Oman’s Meteorological Authority responded Saturday morning that there is no risk of tsunamis during this period due to the earthquake in the Arabian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian Seismological Center reported that an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the King Port area of The Hormuzkan province in southern Iran after midnight Friday.
The Center of the Geophysical Foundation of Tehran University said in a report that the earthquake struck at 1:01 a.m. Saturday local time
The quake occurred at a depth of 19 km from the earth’s surface, with a position at 26.67 and an eastern length of 55.21 degrees, according to the center.
The Sultanate’s states are subjected to a number of earthquakes from time to time, but no material and human damage has been caused.

الدوحة: بعد انتشار شائعات على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي عن إمكانية حدوث موجات تسونامي في منطقة الخليج، ردت هيئة الأرصاد في سلطنة عمان، صباح السبت، إنه لا مخاطر من وقوع موجات تسونامي خلال هذه الفترة جرّاء الزلزال الذي وقع في الخليج العربي بالقرب من مضيق هرمز.
وكان مركز رصد الزلازل الإيراني قد أفاد بأن زلزالاً بقوة 5.8 درجات على مقياس ريختر ضرب، بعد منتصف ليلة الجمعة، منطقة ميناء كنغ في محافظة هرمزكان جنوبي إيران.
وقال المركز التابع للمؤسسة الجيوفيزيائية بجامعة طهران في تقرير إن الزلزال وقع في الساعة الواحدة و1 دقيقة و3 ثوانٍ بعد منتصف ليلة الجمعة/ السبت بالتوقيت المحلي (التاسعة و31 دقيقة و3 ثوانٍ مساء بتوقيت غرينتش).
ووقع الزلزال في عمق 19 كم من سطح الأرض، وكان مركزه عند التقاء خطي العرض الشمالي 26.67 والطول الشرقي 55.21 درجة، بحسب المركز.
وتتعرض ولايات السلطنة لعدد من الزلازل والهزات الأرضية بين الحين والآخر، لكن لم تخلف أية أضرار مادية وبشرية.
