Great interest in using modern technology in the agricultural sector in Qatar

DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has offered 34 new strategic projects for private investors to produce vegetables using greenhouse technology with an area of about 100,000sqm per project.

The Ministry pays special attention to the dissemination of soil-less farming technology. The recent period has witnessed significant growth in soil-less cultivated areas in a large number of Qatari farms. The new projects for producing vegetables in greenhouses will apply this type of technology, said the Ministry in a statement.

Qatar has participated in the Arab Agriculture Day celebration held by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development under the theme “Smart Agriculture: A Better Future for Arab Agriculture”, QNA reported.

In a statement issued on this occasion, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment said that in recent years there have seen a significant increase in the cultivated area of green houses from about 120 hectares in 2010 to more than 300 hectares this year.

Qatar’s agricultural sector has achieved huge leaps in the use of modern irrigation systems in the Qatari farms, increasing the use of these systems from about 45 percent of the total cultivated area in 2010, to exceed 80 percent of the total cultivated area in Qatari farms in 2018.

The Ministry encouraged the transformation of farms from traditional irrigation to modern irrigation systems through an agreement with the Qatar Development Bank to grant farmers easy loans to install modern irrigation systems, in addition to taking some legislative measures that contribute to the transformation of modern irrigation systems.

As for the green fodder production sector, the Ministry said that its strategy in this area is to reduce the use of groundwater in the cultivation of this type of feed, with the aim of using treated sewage water, pointing out that during this period, three new farms were established for the production of green fodder with treated sewage water with a total area of 650 hectares, bringing the total area cultivated with treated sewage in the state to about 4,000 hectares.

The Ministry pays great attention to organic agriculture for its high competitiveness in the Qatari market, pointing out that eight Qatari farms use the organic production method, three of which are currently marketing their vegetables in the Qatari market, while others are preparing to register for organic farming over the next few years.

In the livestock sector, as one of the important and vital sectors of special interest in MME, it recently opened the Animal Production Research Center in Al- Shehaniya, which is mainly concerned with applied research in livestock, including In vitro fertilisation (IVF) research.

The Ministry said that it is interested in the development of veterinary services, in terms of treatment and immunisation, and provides them free of charge, noting that every year about 700,000 heads of animals immunised, which leads to a huge boom in the number of animals in the country, from around 600,000 in 2012 to about 1.5 million this year.

A number of other fish farming projects will be launched during the next few years.

The first shrimp farming project will be offered for private investors with an annual production capacity of 1,000 tons, ensuring the full provision of state needs of the shrimp.

The project will market its products in the Qatari market next year.

تشارك دولة قطر ممثلة في وزارة البلدية والبيئة في احتفال المنظمة العربية للتنمية الزراعية بيوم الزراعة العربي، الذي يصادف السابع والعشرين من شهر سبتمبر كل عام، ويحتفل به هذه المرة تحت شعار “الزراعة الذكية مستقبل أفضل للزراعة العربية والحفاظ على الموارد الطبيعية”.

وأكدت وزارة البلدية والبيئة في بيان بهذه المناسبة أن دولة قطر تولي اهتماما كبيرا لاستخدام التكنولوجيا الحديثة في القطاع الزراعي خاصة التكنولوجيا الذكية الموفرة للمياه والمعززة للإنتاجية، بهدف الوصول الى أقصى إنتاج ممكن من الوحدة الارضية، وبأقل قدر من الموارد الطبيعية المتاحة، خاصة عنصر المياه باعتباره واحدا من أهم محددات التوسع في الإنتاج الزراعي بالدولة، وبما يساهم كذلك في تحقيق التنمية المستدامة للقطاع الزراعي القطري.

ونوهت الوزارة في هذا الصدد إلى أن استراتيجيتها تركز بشكل كبير على التوسع الرأسي في الإنتاج الزراعي، من خلال تعظيم استخدام التكنولوجيا الزراعية الذكية في القطاعات الزراعية المختلفة ( نباتي حيواني سمكي)، مؤكدا أن القطاع الزراعي القطري قد حقق نجاحا كبيرا في هذا المجال.

وأوضحت في هذا السياق أن القطاع النباتي بالدولة حقق بدوره قفزات هائلة في مجال استخدام نظم الري الحديثة في المزارع القطرية، بحيث زادت نسبة استخدام هذه النظم من نحو 45 بالمائة من اجمالي المساحات المزروعة عام 2010، لتتجاوز نسبة استخدام نظم الري الحديثة نسبة 80 بالمائة من إجمالي المساحات المزروعة بالمزارع القطرية عام 2018.

كما شجعت الوزارة تحول المزارع من نظم الري التقليدية، إلى نظم الري الحديثة، من خلال إبرام اتفاقية مع بنك قطر للتنمية، لمنح المزارع قروضا ميسرة لتركيب نظم الري الحديثة بها، بفائدة 1 بالمائة فقط، يتم سدادها على مدة 8 سنوات، بالإضافة إلى اتخاذ بعض التدابير التشريعية التي تساهم في تحولها لنظم الري الحديثة.

وقد ركزت وزارة البلدية والبيئة حسبما تضمنه البيان، خلال السنوات القليلة الماضية، بشكل كبير على توطين تكنولوجيا البيوت المحمية بالمزارع القطرية، باعتبارها الوسيلة الفعالة لزيادة الإنتاج من الخضراوات بالمزارع القطرية من ناحية، وتقليل استهلاك المياه ورفع إنتاجية الوحدة منها من ناحية أخرى، في حين شهدت السنوات الأخيرة زيادة كبيرة في المساحات المزروعة بالبيوت المحمية وذلك من نحو 120 هكتارا عام 2010، إلى ما يزيد عن 300 هكتار في هذا العام، بنسبة زيادة تناهز 150 بالمائة.

وقالت الوزارة في هذا الخصوص إنها طرحت “34” مشروعا استراتيجيا جديدا على مستثمري القطاع الخاص بالدولة، لإنتاج الخضراوات باستخدام تكنولوجيا البيوت المحمية، بمساحة تبلغ حوالي مائة ألف متر مربع للمشروع الواحد.

كما تهتم الوزارة وبشكل خاص بنشر تكنولوجيا الزراعة بدون تربة، حيث شهدت الفترة الأخيرة نموا كبيرا في المساحات المزروعة بدون تربة في عدد كبير من المزارع القطرية، علما أن المشروعات الجديدة المطروحة للاستثمار في مجال انتاج الخضراوات بالبيوت المحمية ستعتمد في الإنتاج على استخدام هذا النوع من التكنولوجيا.

أما فيما يتعلق بقطاع إنتاج الأعلاف الخضراء، فقالت وزارة البلدية والبيئة إن استراتيجيتها في هذا المجال تقوم على تقليل استخدام المياه الجوفية في زراعات هذا النوع من الأعلاف، مع التوجه في زراعتها بمياه الصرف الصحي المعالج، مشيرة إلى أنه تم خلال هذه الفترة إقامة “3” مزارع جديدة لإنتاج الأعلاف الخضراء بمياه الصرف الصحي المعالج بمساحة إجمالية تناهز 650 هكتارا، ليصل إجمالي المساحات المزروعة بالأعلاف الخضراء بمياه الصرف الصحي المعالج بالدولة إلى حوالي 4000 هكتار، في وقت تعمل فيه الوزارة على طرح “8” مشاريع استراتيجية ضخمة لإنتاج الأعلاف الخضراء بمياه الصرف الصحي المعالج بإجمالي مساحة تناهز 1400 هكتار.
