Locally grown produce at cheap price at Mahaseel Festival

Doha: Freshly picked locally grown vegetables and fruits are being sold at cheap price at the third edition of Mahaseel Festival which opened yesterday at the Southern Area of the Cultural Village Foundation — Katara.

Visitors can choose from wide variety of vegetables and fruits as well as flowering and ornamental plants offered in the stalls representing 22 local farms and nurseries. In addition, they can also buy juice, dairy and meat products from six local companies present at the festival or sample local cuisine from around a dozen food stalls, making the festival a one-stop shop.

Among the vegetables sold at the festival and their prices per kg are broccoli (QR5), cauliflower (QR4), cucumber (QR6), black eggplant (QR2), capsicum (QR7), cabbage (QR3), lettuce (QR2), okra (QR6), tomatoes (QR7) and chilly (QR6). Local farms cultivating organic produce have made their presence felt at this year’s festival offering healthier and cheaper options compared to those in the market.

A kg of organic cucumber for instance is sold for only QR10 while a kg of green beans is available at QR15. There is also a wide range of organic mushrooms being sold such as nameko, shiitake, brown mushroom, king oyster and gray oyster, all at affordable prices.

The best varieties of local dates, honey, eggs, milk and other dairy, poultry and meat products can also be bought at the festival.

Among the new features of the festival is the “Home Garden” section which exhibits colourful flowering and ornamental plants aimed towards motivating people to plant and encourage the culture of creating green spaces.

The festival also offers several entertainment and awareness activities for children and adults to enhance visitor experience and educate them on best agricultural practices while shopping.

The activities also include workshops on planting and flower arrangement, in addition to other sessions to improve agricultural know-how of festival visitors.

There are also a number of rides and exciting games such as inflatables and obstacle course by local recreational sports provider and event organiser QSports.

Following its very successful editions, the festival is organised by Katara for the third consecutive year in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME).

Katara General Manager Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti led the opening of the festival which was followed by a tour of the various stalls.

Dr. Al Sulaiti stressed Katara’s commitment to support and boost local production and reflect the importance of agriculture in Qatar through this festival in a bid to attain the country’s sustainable development strategy. He also underscored how Katara had successfully organised the previous two editions of Mahaseel and how the festival had evolved to include more features and a diverse participation from local farms and companies.

Yesterday’s launch was also attended by Yousef Al Khulaifi, Head of Agricultural Affairs Department at MME and Farhoud Al Hajri, Head of Livestock Department at MME who both assured of the Ministry’s support to such initiatives that assist local farmers to boost their production.

Mahaseel Festival provides an excellent platform for local farms to directly market their produce as well as introduce people to the varieties of fruits and vegetables grown in Qatar which they can purchase at cheap price. The festival is open every day from 9am to 9pm until January 5.

افتتح سعادة الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي -المدير العام للمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي «كتارا»- اليوم الاثنين، النسخة الثالثة لمهرجان محاصيل، الذي تقيمه «كتارا» على الواجهة الجنوبية بالتعاون مع وزارة البلدية والبيئة ومشاركة 35 جهة زراعية وغذائية، بينها 22 مزرعة قطرية و7 مشاتل، و6 شركات وطنية في قطاع الإنتاج الغذائي.

حضر الافتتاح السيد يوسف الخليفي -مدير إدارة الشؤون الزراعية- والسيد فرهود الهاجري -مدير إدارة الثروة الحيوانية في وزارة البلدية والبيئة- وأصحاب المزارع القطرية، والشركات الوطنية المشاركة، وجمهور غفير من زوار «كتارا».

وبهذه المناسبة، أكد سعادة الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي -المدير العام للمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي «كتارا»- «أن مهرجان محاصيل بات يجسّد الاهتمام بالمنتجات الزراعية الوطنية، ويعكس أهمية الزراعة المحلية، ويساهم في تشجيع أصحاب المزارع على تطوير وزيادة إنتاجهم، تلبية لاحتياجات السوق القطري، والنهوض بالواقع الزراعي، وتعزيز الأمن الغذائي، وتحقيق الاكتفاء الذاتي، وذلك سعياً للوصول إلى استراتيجية التنمية المستدامة».

وأعرب الدكتور السليطي عن سعادته بإطلاق النسخة الثالثة من مهرجان محاصيل، مشيراً إلى أن «كتارا» حققت نجاحاً ملموساً في تنظيم المهرجان لثلاث سنوات متتالية، وذلك عبر التوسع والتنوع الذي يشهده «محاصيل» كل عام، وهو ما يساهم في دعم الاقتصاد الوطني والقطاع الزراعي في قطر، ويشجع الاستثمار في المحاصيل الزراعية والمنتجات الغذائية، لافتاً إلى أن «كتارا» لن تدخر جهداً لتقديم جميع التسهيلات لإنجاح المهرجان، وتعزيز دوره ومكانته كمنصة تسويقية مهمة للاقتصاد، ورافد حيوي للتنمية والتطوير وتحسين الإنتاج الزراعي والغذائي المستمر.

من جانبه، قال السيد سلمان محمد النعيمي -رئيس اللجنة المنظمة لمهرجان محاصيل-: «إن المهرجان يساهم في تنشيط ودعم وتطوير القطاع الزراعي والإنتاج الغذائي، كما يساعد في تسويق المنتجات الوطنية من الخضراوات والفاكهة التي تتميز بها المزارع والمناحل القطرية، وغيرها من الصناعات الغذائية المتنوعة وعالية الجودة، ويطرحها بأسعار تشجيعية».

من جهة أخرى، سجلت النسخة الثالثة لمهرجان محاصيل مشاركة متميزة لوزارة البلدية والبيئة، بالإضافة إلى مشاركة نحو 22 مزرعة قطرية و7 مشاتل و6 شركات تختص بإنتاج الألبان والدواجن واللحوم مثل، الشركة العربية القطرية لإنتاج الألبان «غدير»، وشركة الخليج لمنتجات الألبان «روعة»، وشركة «داندي»، والشركة العربية القطرية لإنتاج الدواجن، ومزرعة «عذبة»، وشركة «ودام» الغذائية.;
