HMC begins novel treatment for skin disorders, a first in the Middle East

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has introduced new advanced treatment for several skin disorders, which are being used for the first time in the Middle East.

‘Biologics’ , different from traditional systemic drugs, are being used for patients with skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema.

“We have introduced new therapies and treat some of the skin diseases with modern medication. We have the first patients in the whole Middle East who used such medications which are recently approved in the US and Europe,” said Professor Martin Steinhoff, Chairman at the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at HMC.

Professor Steinhoff was joined by Dr Sara Saleh Al Khawaga, Dermatologist at a press conference held yesterday at the Hamad bin Khalifa Medical City.

Biologic drugs are different from traditional systemic drugs that impact the entire immune system. Biologics target specific parts of the immune system.

Biologic is a protein-based drug derived from living cells cultured in a laboratory and given by injection or intravenous infusion.

“We have more than 60 patients with psoriasis, a common skin condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells, receive a new biologic. Also patients with eczema receive biologic and they have improved significantly within a short time,” said Professor Steinhoff who is also a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Qatar University and Weill Cornell Medicine Qatar.

“There are variety of biologic drugs and we choose and provide them upon the condition and nature of the patient,” he added.

Also a new treatment for Alopecia areata which can cause partial or complete hair loss among children and adults has been introduced at HMC.

“We have introduced new oral medication, which has been used for few years in the world and treated around 10 patients successfully with alopecia areata,” said Professor Steinhoff.

The Department of Dermatology and Venerology at HMC with services at Rumailah, Al Wakra, Al Khor and Cuban hospital treats a total of 70,000 patients with skin disorders annually.

“Services at the Department of Dermatology and Venerology have improved significantly over the past two years. We have seen an increase of 30 percent in number of patients due to the expansion of our services,” said Professor Steinhoff.

The Department of Dermatology and Venereology includes clinics for general complex conditions, emergencies, follow-up clinics, and subspecialties.

The department has opened new subspecialty clinics on the wide spectrum of Dermatology and Venereology, phlebology, dermato-surgery and immunology.

“We have improved the referral system so it’s easier for Primary Health Care Corporation and private hospitals to refer patients. The waiting has reduced from two months to four weeks. But we have a triage system and we see some on the same day, within three days or seven days depending on the condition of the patient,” said Professor Steinhoff.

كشف بروفيسور مارتن ستينهوف رئيس قسم الجلدية بمستشفى حمد، وأستاذ الأمراض الجلدية بكلية وايل كورنيل للطب – قطر، عن نجاح قسم الجلدية في تقليل معدلات الانتظار من 8 أشهر إلى 4 أسابيع فقط حتى يتم فحص المريض للمرة الأولى، لافتاً إلى أن هذا النجاح يرجع إلى زيادة عدد العيادات والأطباء والعمل على استيعاب المزيد من الحالات بصورة كبيرة.

قال في مؤتمر صحافي، أمس، إن من بين الأشياء التي تم تطويرها في القسم، زيادة العيادات في بعض التخصصات لتأخذ بعين الاعتبار الأمراض العديدة التي تنتشر بين المراجعين ومنها تساقط الشعر والصدفية وإكزيما الجلد، كما تم توفير أدوية جديدة لم تكن موجودة، وذلك حرصاً على توفير أفضل العلاجات والأدوية في قسم الجلدية.

ولفت إلى أن من بين الأدوية التي تم إدخالها مؤخراً هو دواء جديد للصدفية، يستطيع أن يقلل الأعراض الخاصة به، حيث إنه مرض مزمن ويتعلق بالجينات ولا يوجد له علاج نهائي، موضحاً أن الدواء الجديد يستطيع أن يقلل أعراض المرض، حيث إنه يركز على جزيئات الجسم التي تتسبب في زيادة الأعراض.

وأوضح أنه من المعروف أن الأمراض الجينية لا يمكن علاجها ولكن يمكن السيطرة عليها، مضيفاً أنه للمرة الأولى يمكن لمريض الصدفية أن يتناول العلاج المناسب للمرض ولا يعاني من مضاعفات أو تأثيرات سلبية له، بالإضافة إلى تحسين مستوى السيطرة على المرض وتحسين الحالة النفسية للمريض.

استقبال 70 ألف مريض خلال 2018

قال البروفيسور مارتن ستينهوف إن عيادات الجلدية بمؤسسة حمد الطبية استقبلت أكثر من 70 ألف مريض خلال العام الماضي في كل من مستشفى الرميلة ومستشفى الوكرة والخور، موضحاً أن هذا العدد يزيد بنسبة 30% عن السنوات الماضية. وأضاف أن المؤسسة لديها 37 عيادة للأمراض الجلدية موزعة على جميع المستشفيات، وتعمل على مدار خمسة أيام بالأسبوع من الأحد للخميس، لافتاً إلى وجود تعاون مع مؤسسة الرعاية الصحية الأولية لاستقبال التحويلات للحالات التي لا يمكن علاجها في عيادات الأمراض الجلدية في المراكز الصحية، كما يمكن استقبال التحويلات من القطاع الخاص أيضاً. وتابع أنه يتم استقبال أكثر من 1600 تحويل شهرياً من المراكز الصحية والقطاع الخاص ومعظمها حالات لا يمكن السيطرة عليها وعلاجها في المراكز الصحية أو القطاع الخاص.;
