Qatar Museums puts final touches to ‘Syria Matters’ exhibition
“متاحف قطر” تضع اللمسات الأخيرة على معرض “سوريا سلامًا”
DOHA: Preparations are almost complete for the ‘Syria Matters’ exhibition, organised by the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) as part of its 10-year anniversary celebrations. The exhibition is the first of its kind in the region and is due to open to the public on November 22.
Co-curated by Dr Julia Gonnella, Director of MIA and Rania Abdellatif, the exhibition features more than 100 iconic pieces including Syrian pre-Islamic artefacts, Orientalist paintings and photographs, as well as precious works of Islamic art from Syria’s rich history: early Qurans, medieval manuscripts, glass, ceramics, textiles and colourful tiles. It will also show newly conserved elements of a former wooden interior decoration from a private Damascus house.
Some of these pieces are important loans from the various Qatar Museums collections, notably the Orientalist Museum, as well from the Qatar National Library, the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Museum and other private collections. They are presently being installed at the museum.
They are complemented by rare treasures from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Louvre in Paris, Berlin’s Museum of Ancient Near Eastern Art the Berlin State Library, the British Library and the Türk ve Eserleri Müzesi in Istanbul.
Some of the most important pieces on display include a bird of prey, sculpted in basalt, from the archaeological site of Tell Halaf in Northern Syria, dating from the early 9th century BCE; a Palmyra relief with a camel, dating from the first half of 3rd century CE; and paintings from QM’s Orientalist Collection including “The Great Caravan at Palmyra” circa 1785, Louis-François Cassas and “Damascus”, circa 1860 by Edward Lear.
Other interesting pieces which will be on show are the so-called Cavour Vase, which is the most spectacular example of a very small group of richly decorated cobalt blue and purple enameled and gilded glass vessels made in Syria or Egypt in the late 13th century CE and a precious gilded blue flask made in the mid-12th century CE in or near what is today the Syrian city of Raqqa, situated on the Euphrates in the north-east of the country.
As part of QM’s pledge to safeguard Syria’s unique cultural legacy, visitors will be able to encounter some of Syria’s most iconic World Heritage sites, such as Damascus but also Palmyra and the citadel of Aleppo, which has seen so much suffering during the war, in a specially designed immersive film experience by the French company Iconem.
تضع متاحف قطر اللمسات النهائية على معرض “سوريا سلاماً” الذي تنظمه للمرة الأولى في المنطقة ويستضيفه متحف الفن الإسلامي.
ويأتي المعرض، الذي يستقبل الجمهور في 22 نوفمبر الجاري، بالتزامن مع مرور 10 أعوام على تأسيس متحف الفن الإسلامي.
يُشرِف على تقييم المعرض الدكتورة جوليا غونيلا، مدير متحف الفن الإسلامي ورانيا عبد اللطيف. ويضم المعرض أكثر من 100 قطعة فنية سورية تعود لفترة ما قبل الإسلام، إلى جانب لوحات لمستشرقين، وصور فوتوغرافية، ومقتنيات إسلامية سورية نفيسة، منها نسخ قرآنية قديمة، ومخطوطات تعود للقرون الوسطى، وأعمال زجاجية وخزفية ومنسوجات وبلاط ملوّن. كما يقدم المعرض أعمالاً خشبية تم ترميمها في الآونة الأخيرة، كانت تزين أحد البيوت الدمشقية.
أُخذت قطع المعرض على سبيل القرض من مجموعات متاحف قطر المتعددة مثل مجموعة المستشرقين، ومن مكتبة قطر الوطنية ومتحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم. إلى جانب بعض المجموعات الخاصة.
واستكملت المجموعة بقطع من متحف هيرميتاج في سانت بطرسبرغ ومتحف اللوفر في باريس ومتحف فنون الشرق الأدنى القديم في برلين ومكتبة برلين الوطنية، والمكتبة البريطانية، ومتحف الآثار التركية في اسطنبول.
ومن أهم المحتويات التي سيضمها المعرض:
منحوتة من البازلت لطائر جارح تنتمي لمنطقة تل حلف الأثرية في شمال سوريا ويرجع تاريخها إلى مطلع القرن التاسع قبل الميلاد (متحف فنون الشرق الأدنى القديم في برلين).
نحت نافر عليه رسم لجملٍ في مدينة تدمر يعود تاريخها للنصف الأول من القرن الثالث الميلادي (مجموعة مؤسسة الشيخ سعود بن محمد).
لوحات من مجموعة المستشرقين في متاحف قطر تشمل “لوحة الكرفان الكبير في تدمر” رسمها الفنان لوي- فرانسوا كاساس (1766-1827) حوالي عام 1785ميلادي ولوحة “دمشق” التي رسمها الفنان إدوارد لير (1812-1888) حوالي عام 1860.
مزهرية كافور التي تنتمي إلى مجموعة صغيرة من الأواني الزجاجية الزرقاء البنفسجية المطلية بالذهب والمينا المصنوعة في سوريا أو مصر في أواخر القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي (مجموعة متحف الفن الإسلامي).
دورق أزرق مذهب صُنع في أواسط القرن الثاني عشر الميلادي تقريباً فيما يعرف اليوم بمدينة الرقة السورية الواقعة على نهر الفرات شمال شرق البلاد أو على مقربة منها (مجموعة متحف الفن الإسلامي).
وفي إطار تعهَّد متاحف قطر بحماية التراث الثقافي الفريد لسوريا، سيتعرّف الزوار على بعض أهم المواقع الأثرية العالمية السورية في دمشق وتدمر إلى جانب قلعة حلب، التي عانت الكثير خلال الحرب، وذلك من خلال تجربة سينمائية رائعة صممتها شركة Iconem الفرنسية خصيصاً لهذا المعرض.
