Artificial insemination may increase the risk of mental disabilities

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The technical means used in reproduction – such as microscopic injections – may increase the risk of having children with intellectual disabilities, a recent Australian medical study found.

The researchers said in the journal “Pediatrics” that Down syndrome is the most common among the intellectual disabilities that may be infected by children born by artificial insemination, accounting for 10% of the cases compared to, 5% among the born naturally.

The researchers examined 2876 children born using IVF techniques and 207,751 natural children in Western Australia between 1994 and 2002.

The study found that children born with IVF were 58% more likely to have a mental disability by at least eight years.

“The vast majority of babies born with IVF are healthy and do not have mental disabilities,” said Michel Hansen, a senior researcher at the Children’s Institute of Tulithon and the University of Western Australia in Perth.

The study pointed out that direct injection of sperm into the egg was responsible for most cases of intellectual disabilities among children born by IVF.

This type of artificial insemination is used in the case of male infertility or lack of sperm count, and differs from traditional injections in which the egg sperm is “naturally” mixed in a laboratory container.

وفحص الباحثون بيانات 2876 طفلا مولودين باستخدام تقنيات التلقيح الصناعي، و207 آلاف و751 طفلا طبيعيا في ولاية أستراليا الغربية بين عامي 1994 و2002.

ووجدت الدراسة أن الأطفال المولودين بواسطة التلقيح الصناعي كانوا أكثر عرضة بنسبة 58 في المئة للإصابة بإعاقة ذهنية بحلول سن ثماني سنوات على الأقل، وتبين أن 3551 طفلا من المولودين طبيعيا أصيبوا بإعاقة ذهنية أي ما يمثل 17 من بين كل ألف طفل. ووصلت هذه النسبة بين الأطفال المولودين بواسطة التلقيح الصناعي إلى 20 من بين كل ألف طفل.

وأشارت الدراسة إلى أن حقن الحيوان المنوي مباشرة في البويضة كان مسؤولا عن معظم حالات الإعاقات الذهنية بين الأطفال المولودين بواسطة التلقيح الصناعي ويستخدم هذا النوع من التلقيح الصناعي في حالة عقم الرجال أو قلة عدد الحيوانات المنوية ويختلف عن الحقن المجهري التقليدي الذي يتم فيه خلط الحيوان المنوي بالبويضة “بشكل طبيعي” في وعاء بالمختبر.

وقال الباحثون في دورية (بيدياتريكس) إن متلازمة داون هي الأكثر شيوعا من بين الإعاقات الذهنية التي قد يصاب بها الأطفال المواليد بواسطة التلقيح الصناعي، إذ تمثل 10 في المئة من حالات الإصابة مقارنة بخمسة في المئة بين المولودين بشكل طبيعي.
