EU Renews Call to Lebanese Authorities to Announce Results of Beirut Blast Probe

Brussels: The European Union (EU) renewed its call to the Lebanese authorities to announce the results of the investigations into Beirut port explosion that shook the city a year ago.

In a statement on Wednesday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said it was time for Lebanon “to deliver results, without further delays” into last year’s massive Beirut port explosion, which killed at least 218 people. “One year after this tragic event, the families of the victims and the Lebanese people are still waiting for answers,” said Borrell.

The European official urged the Lebanese political parties to work on restoring the people’s confidence, put aside differences and form a full-fledged government capable of facing the country’s economic, financial and social crises.

It is worth noting that the European Union will participate in the donors’ conference for Lebanon, which will be held later on Wednesday under the joint sponsorship of France and United Nations.

جاء ذلك في بيان صدر يوم الأمس عن السيد جوزيب بوريل الممثل الأعلى للأمن والسياسة الخارجية في الاتحاد الأوروبي، بمناسبة الذكرى الأولى للانفجار الذي أودى بحياة أكثر من 200 شخص وأدى إلى جرح الآلاف وإحداث تدمير كبير في المساكن والبنى التحتية في عدة أحياء من المدينة.

وعبر بوريل عن أسفه لعدم تحرك السلطات اللبنانية بالشكل المناسب بعد هذا الحادث المأساوي، حيث ” لا تزال عائلات الضحايا والشعب اللبناني ينتظرون الأجوبة ” وفق كلامه.

وحث المسؤول الأوروبي، الأطراف السياسية اللبنانية على انتهاز فرصة حلول الذكرى الأولى للانفجار مرفأ بيروت والعمل على استعادة ثقة الشعب، وضع الخلافات جانباً والإسراع في تشكيل حكومة كاملة الصلاحية قادرة على مواجهة أزمات البلاد الاقتصادية والمالية والاجتماعية.

يذكر أن الاتحاد الأوروبي سيشارك في مؤتمر المانحين للبنان الذي يعقد في وقت لاحق اليوم، برعاية مشتركة بين فرنسا والأمم المتحدة.
