Qafco signs deal to establish greenhouse technology test facility

DOHA: Qatar Fertiliser Company (Qafco), Agrico and Yara International ASA (Norway) signed a Cooperation Agreement to establish a Test Facility in Qatar to test greenhouse technologies, nutrient management and fertigation solutions with the aim of developing an appropriate hydroponics system best suited for the Qatari climate and with the main objective to achieve the optimum possible results in growing e.g. fruits and vegetables in local climate conditions with limited access to water.

Abdulrahman Alsuwaidi, Chief Executive Officer of Qafco, Nasser Al Khalaf, General Manager of Agrico and Ivan de Witte, General Manager of Yara International ASA Trade Representative office in Qatar, jointly signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of the three companies.

Qafco continues its participation in initiatives which contribute towards Qatar’s goal of agricultural self-sufficiency through the partnership with YARA and Agrico. The partnership intends to identify an optimum combination of fertilizer blends through various techniques that can help improve the quality and yield of Qatari produce.

Al Khalaf expressed, “Agrico is proud to cooperate with Qafco and YARA to further develop and increase the local vegetables production which will play a major role in Qatar 2030 vision of achieving food security in the agriculture sector.

We are confident in the cooperation to bring sustainable high yield production all around the year. With this platform we will be able to increase awareness among local farms which will improve their yield and quality by using environmental control greenhouse system and low irrigation consumption.

Ivan de Witte expressed, “Yara is proud to have been a partner to the state of Qatar for nearly 50 years through our shareholding in Qafco. With this cooperation agreement we make another important commitment to development of Qatar’s agricultural sector.

Yara being the world crop nutrition leader and driving innovative and sustainable growth in agricultural sector together with our partners Agrico and Qafco will develop better crop nutrition solutions tailored for Qatar. By means of this and other partnerships we have engaged in, we intend to achieve our ultimate goal to impact the whole Qatar farming sector positively in terms of economic viability and environmental impact.

The cooperation agreement formalises ongoing efforts by the three entities to support the farming sector in Qatar and demonstrate the impact of improved growing methods and nutrient management.. Over the past months, the entities have already engaged in joined activities to prepare the test facilities. During the next 12 months the parties will operate the Test Facility jointly and share the outcome with other stakeholders in Qatar.

وقعت كل من شركة قطر للأسمدة الكيماوية «قافكو» والشركة العالمية لتطوير المشاريع «أجريكو» وشركة يارا إنترناشيونال أيه.أس.أيه (النرويج)، اتفاقية تعاون لتأسيس وحدة اختبار في قطر، لاختبار تقنيات البيوت الزراعية المحمية، وإدارة واستخدام المغذيات وحلول الري المسمّد.

وتهدف الخطوة إلى تطوير نظام أمثل للزراعة المائية، يتناسب بشكل أفضل مع المناخ القطري، ومن أجل تحقيق أفضل نتائج ممكنة لزراعة الفواكه والخضراوات في الظروف المناخية المحلية، وفي ظل شح الموارد المحدودة للمياه.

جرت مراسم توقيع الاتفاقية يوم الخميس الماضي في الدوحة، حيث وقعها كل من السيد عبد الرحمن السويدي العضو المنتدب والرئيس التنفيذي لشركة قطر للأسمدة الكيماوية «قافكو»، والسيد ناصر الخلف مدير عام الشركة العالمية لتطوير المشاريع «أجريكو»، والسيد إيفان دي ويت المدير العام لمكتب التمثيل التجاري لشركة يارا إنترناشيونال «أيه.أس.أيه» في قطر.

وتعمل «قافكو» جاهدة على تكثيف التعاون مع الجهات الحكومية والشركات القطرية والعالمية للدخول في مشاريع بحثية وعملية، لتطبيق أحدث الطرق التكنولوجية المواكبة لآخر التطورات العلمية في مجال الزراعة، من أجل الاستغلال الأمثل للموارد المتاحة في قطاع الزراعة بطرق مبتكرة، بما يضمن استدامتها واستخدامها بكفاءة متميزة وعالية في تحقيق الأمن الغذائي.

وتهدف هذه الاتفاقية إلى العمل على تحديد تركيبة مثالية من مزيج أنواع مختلفة من الأسمدة، يتم الوصول إليها من خلال تقنيات متنوعة، وسيمكن استخدام هذه التركيبة من الأسمدة مع اتباع أساليب الزراعة الحديثة المبتكرة، التي سيتم تطويرها عبر جهود وحدة الاختبار التي يتم إنشاؤها بموجب هذه الاتفاقية من المساعدة في تحسين جودة وعائد الإنتاج القطري من الخضراوات والفواكه.

وخلال الشهور الماضية، انخرطت الشركات الثلاث في جهد مشترك، لإعداد وتجهيز وحدة الاختبار، وستعمل الشركات الثلاث معاً على إدارة هذه الوحدة وتشغيلها، ومن ثم مشاركة النتائج التي يتم التوصل إليها مع الجهات الأخرى ذات الصلة في دولة قطر.

تعاون

وتشكل اتفاقية التعاون هذه استمراراً للمبادرات التي تقدمها الشركات الثلاث لدعم قطاع الزراعة في دولة قطر، كما تشكل إضافة حقيقية للجهود التي تبذلها دولة قطر، من أجل النهوض بالقطاع الزراعي، من خلال تطوير أساليب الزراعة المعدلة، واستخدام المغذيات وتقنيات الري الحديثة، التي ستقود إلى التوسع في زراعة البيوت المحمية، وإحداث التطور المنشود في هذا القطاع، بالاستفادة من التكنولوجيا الحديثة التي ستؤدي إلى رفع الكفاءة الإنتاجية، والوصول إلى مستويات أقل لاستهلاك المياه، مما يشكل خطوة مهمة، من أجل تهيئة الظروف لزيادة الاستثمار في البيوت المحمية، التي ستساهم بالتأكيد في تحقيق الاكتفاء الذاتي، ومد السوق المحلي بما يحتاجه من خضراوات وفواكه.
