Celebrity alumnus Horowitz lectures incoming students at NU-Q ceremony

Hollywood producer and Northwestern alumnus Jordan Horowitz advised Northwestern University in Qatar’s incoming class to forget about their expectations and to focus on the process.

The annual convocation, which marks the beginning of the academic year – was attended by NU-Q faculty and staff, along with members of NU-Q’s incoming class, family and friends.

At the ceremony, NU-Q Dean Everette E Dennis said that Horowitz “exemplifies great achievement and excellence” and is “known for his leadership in creative industries where he has achieved notable critical and commercial success.”

In his remarks to the students, Horowitz explained the most important thing he has learned over the course of his career – “One,” he said, “your expectations are meaningless, and two, process is everything.”

In explaining this advice, Horowitz pointed to his unsuccessful films early in his career – all of which did not meet his expectations. As his career developed, Horowitz revised his methods and with the movie ‘La La Land’ he saw success.

“Instead of forcing things to be a certain way for reasons outside of the film itself, we were patient, we listened to what the movie wanted, to what the movie needed, we gave it the space and time and care it deserved. Instead of defining our success by the results, by what we expected people to think of the movie, we found our success in the process,” he told the audience.

Also speaking at the convocation was NU-Q Student Union Alessandra El Chanti who reinforced Horowitz’s message and told her fellow students as Northwestern students they should dream big.

“Here at NU-Q, communication students are not only filmmakers and journalism students are not only reporters. We are grander than just that. We’re researchers, leaders, storytellers, and aspiring professionals in the vast field of media. There is so much to learn and even more to create. Here, you are allowed to dream bigger. You have all the resources in this university to make that happen,” El Chanti said.

During his visit to NU-Q, Horowitz also spent time advising students in the classroom, participated in a community meeting, and hosted a special screening of ‘La La Land’ for the NU-Q community. Students were also invited to ask him questions about his work, inspirations, and experience in Hollywood.

The more than 100 members of NU-Q’s Class of 2022 inducted at the Convocation ceremony is the largest in the school’s history and joins Northwestern’s global family numbering more than 250,000 alumni around the world, including a number of notable figures and celebrities who are leaders in the media industry.

وفي بداية الحفل، رحب السيد إيفيرت دينيس -عميد الجامعة ورئيسها التنفيذي- بضيفه هورويتز، ووصفه بأنه أحد الأمثلة الحية على التميز والإنجاز، وأنه معروف لدى الجميع بريادته في مجال العمل الإبداعي، الذي حقق فيه نجاحاً مميزاً ومهماً على الصعيد التجاري.

وتحدث المنتج السينمائي الشهير جوردان هورويتز -المعروف بإنتاجه للفيلم الكوميدي الموسيقي الحائز على جائزة أوسكار «لا لا لاند»- مع الطلاب عن ضرورة مواءمة توقعاتهم مع التركيز على التطور في حياتهم، وقال خلال كلمته: «إن التطلعات قد تكون عديمة المعنى إن لم يركز المرء على تطوير ذاته».

وعلل هورويتز وجهة نظره تلك ملمحاً إلى أفلامه التي أنتجها في أوائل مسيرته، ولم تلقَ نجاحاً حينها، وأرجع سبب ذلك إلى أنها جميعاً لم ترقَ إلى تطلعاته، إلا أنه ومع نضوجه مهنياً تسنى له مراجعة طريقة عمله، وخاصة خلال إنتاج فيلم «لا لا لاند»، الذي حقق نجاحاً باهراً.

وتوجه هورويتز بكلمته إلى الحضور، وقال: «لقد تحلينا بالصبر بدلاً من تسيير الأمور باتجاه معين خارج إطار الفيلم، وقد استمعنا جيداً إلى احتياجات الإنتاج، وأعطيناها المساحة والوقت المستحق لها، ولم نربط معايير النجاح بالنتائج، بل بما يتوقعه المشاهدون حيال الفيلم، ووجدنا النجاح في منظومة العمل ذاتها».

وعلى صعيد متصل، أكدت اليساندرا الشانتي -رئيس اتحاد الطلاب بالجامعة- على مضمون ما جاء في كلمة هورويتز، وشجعت زملائها على الحلم لأبعد الحدود. وقالت: «إن طلاب الاتصال والصحافة في جامعة نورثويسترن في قطر ليسوا صناع أفلام وطلاب صحافة ومراسلين وحسب، بل أعظم من ذلك كله، إننا باحثون وقادة وكتاب ومهنيون في عالم الإعلام الشاسع، وهناك المزيد أمامنا للتعلم والإبداع، وهنا من حقك أن يبلغ حلمك عنان السماء، فالجامعة تقدم لك كل الأدوات لتحقيق حلمك».

وخلال زيارته للجامعة، أمضى المنتج السينمائي الشهير جوردان هورويتز بعض الوقت مع الطلاب داخل قاعات الدراسة، وشارك في اجتماع للطلاب، واستضاف كذلك عرضاً خاصاً لفيلم «لا لا لاند»، كما أتيح للطلاب تبادل أطراف الحديث معه، وسؤاله عن عمله ومصادر إلهامه، وخبرته في هوليوود.

وحضر حفل الاستقبال -الذي نظمته الجامعة للترحيب بطلابها الجدد- ما يزيد عن 100 طالب وطالبة من دفعة 2022، الأكبر من نوعها في تاريخ الجامعة منذ افتتاحها في قطر، لينضم الطلاب إلى عائلة نورثويسترن العالمية، التي يتخطى تعداد خريجيها ما يزيد عن 250 ألف خريج حول العالم، ومن بينهم ألمع النجوم في سماء صناعة الإعلام.;
