The Hottest of Ultrahot Exoplanets Literally Vaporizes Metals

The solar systems beyond ours are rich with diverse celestial bodies that we are just starting to explore. From cloud-free gas giants to planets resembling hell, the constant discoveries made by astronomers never cease to amaze.

Now, an international team of researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the University of Bern (UNIBE), Switzerland, have stumbled on a juicy new tidbit of information regarding ultrahot planets. Ultrahot planets are exoplanets in other solar systems that orbit dangerously close to their host stars.

To make matters more heated, these bodies’ stars are also significantly hotter than our already scorching Sun. This makes these exoplanets, also called ultrahot Jupiters, ridiculously hot!

So hot it vaporizes metal!
Just last week, a NASA study found that some of these objects have temperatures so high they exhibit starlike atmospheres that tear water molecules apart. This week’s research discovered that one such ultrahot planet, the one currently considered the hottest of the bunch, goes even beyond that, featuring temperatures that literally vaporize metal.

In addition, KELT-9b’s star measures temperatures of over 10,000 degrees, nearly twice as hot as the Sun. As a result, KELT-9b is heated to a scathing 4,000 degrees, not as hot as the Sun but definitely hotter than many stars.

NCCR PlanetS researchers affiliated with the University of Bern undertook a theoretical study on KELT-9b’s atmosphere, since it is way too hot and far for a physical study, and produced some incredible findings. “The results of these simulations show that most of the molecules found there should be in atomic form, because the bonds that hold them together are broken by collisions between particles that occur at these extremely high temperatures”, explained Kevin Heng, a professor at the UNIBE.

Following a gaseous treasure map
More impressively, the simulations indicated that the planet held atmospheric gaseous atomic iron that could be observed using current telescopes. So, the UNIGE FOUR ACES1 team, part of NCCR PlanetS, used the HARPS-North spectrograph, an instrument that separates light into a frequency spectrum, to observe KELT-9b during a planetary transit.

During this period, a tiny amount of a star’s light filters through an orbiting planet’s atmosphere. Astronomers can then use a spectrograph to analyze this filtered flare and extrapolate the chemical composition of a planet’s atmosphere.

Amongst many components, iron vapor, in particular, exhibits a distinctly recognizable fingerprint in a planet’s spectrographic frequency spectrum. As predicted by the simulations guiding the astronomers’ work, UNIGE FOUR ACES1 indeed discovered a strong iron vapor signal and even spotted an unexpected vaporized metal, titanium.

“With the theoretical predictions in hand, it was like following a treasure map,” said Jens Hoeijmakers, a researcher at the Universities of Geneva and Bern and lead author of the study, “and when we dug deeper into the data, we found even more.”

The discovery was published in the journal Nature.

وبحسب ما نقلت صحيفة «مترو» البريطانية، فإن الكوكب «الجهنمي» -الذي يتكون في أغلبه من الهيدروجين ونواة صلبة صغرى- يمتاز بمواصفات يجري رصدها لدى النجوم في العادة. وأوضح الباحثون أن الكوكب الجديد ليس أكثر حرارة من الشمس، لكنه يتجاوز الطاقة الموجودة في أي نجم آخر في المجموعة الشمسية.

ويضيف علماء «ناسا» أن حرارة الكوكب «الحارق» الذي أُطلق عليه اسم «KELT-9b» تناهز 4300 درجة مئوية، وبذلك يكون أكثر الكواكب المعروفة حرارة.

ويفوق حجم الكوكب الغازي الكبير كوكب المشتري بقرابة 3 مرات «2.8»، لكن «الكوكب الجهنمي» أقل كثافة بواقع النصف.

ويعزو الباحثون ارتفاع درجة الحرارة في الكوكب إلى كونه قريباً من النجوم التي انبثق عنها، ولذلك فهو يجري دورة كاملة حولها في 36 ساعة فقط، كما أن جزءاً من الجسم الفضائي معرض دائماً للشمس.

ويقع الكوكب على بعد 650 ألف سنة ضوئية، وهذا الاكتشاف الفضائي المهم يفتح الباب أمام العلماء لإيجاد مزيد من الكواكب وسط بحث عن مواقع فلكية قابلة للحياة.

وتم اكتشاف الكوكب خلال العام الماضي، وأوضحت دراسة حديثة منشورة في مجلة «نيتشر» العلمية المواصفات الغريبة للكوكب، الذي يمزج بين صفات النجوم والكواكب.;
