Electric Rangie: 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e gets 31 miles of EV power

The 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport goes on sale this later this year, and the big news is that the line will get a production version of the P400e plug-in that we drove in 2017.

So let’s start there. The Range Rover Sport (smaller than the normal Range Rover) P400e comes with the company’s 2.0-liter gasoline engine making 296 hp along with an electric motor delivering 141 hp more. That motor and the 13.1-kWh lithium-ion battery are good for a total of 398 hp and a healthy 472 lb-ft of torque. That will get buyers to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds with a top speed of 137 mph.

The combination works in either parallel hybrid or EV mode meaning it can travel up to 31 miles on electricity alone. Parallel mode uses both engine and motor to deliver the most efficient driving, using navigational, traffic and other cues, while a “save” mode prioritizes the engine, keeping the battery topped off for electric driving later.

A full charge, according to Land Rover, takes 2 hours, 45 minutes with a 220-volt charger.

The P400e also features timed charging to make the most of low hourly rates, and owners can use an app to check the status and set up those times.

The rest of the new Range Rover Sport lineup uses a mix of gas and diesel engines including a 3.0-liter supercharged gasoline unit making 340 hp or 380 hp depending on application, a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel making 254 hp and a 5.0-liter gasoline V8 producing either 518 hp or 575 hp in the upscale SVAutobiography versions.

The sheetmetal is very similar to the outgoing model but with a longer hood, a slightly massaged grille and wider vent blades. All come standard with LEDs in a few different versions. In back, all Range Rover Sports now get integrated exhaust tailpipes too.

Off the road, the Range Rover Sport continues its legendary ability. Even the P400e gets Terrain Response 2 (the company’s off-road driving programs) and low range that can be operated in EV mode. Land Rover notes that in that mode, the vehicle has no creep speed (the idle speed you see when you let off the brakes) and max torque, 472 lb-ft, from zero rpm.

As someone who has gone off-road in a PHEV, there is something nice about crawling through the wilderness with no engine noise covering the forest sounds.

That Terrain Response 2 system, if you’re unfamiliar, has modes for grass/gravel/snow, mud/ruts, sand, rock crawl and eco. Like most cars, those modes adjust throttle, steering, suspension and transmission operation. New for 2019 is a wade-sensing system that will tell you how deep the water is relative to the max depth, which is 33.5 inches.

The 4WD system has a transfer case that uses an actuator rather than a separate motor and ECU. This results in, according to Land Rover, a weight savings of about 3 pounds. It’s controlled using a multiplate clutch along with a bevel gear center differential for an available 50:50 torque split. The clutch senses wheel slip to distribute torque, and the whole setup can be shifted at speeds up to 37 mph. Supercharged V8 versions get a single-speed transfer case “for on-road performance and agility.”

Inside, obviously, this thing will be plush. There are a couple options for seats, the cheapest of which operates 14 ways, plus ambient lighting, flexible storage and a cooling bin. Cabin air optimization is optional, and the powered sunblind can be operated with gestures. Another cool addition: that sunblind will close automatically when the car is parked and gets too hot.

All Range Rover Sports come with the company’s InControl Touch Duo 10-inch infotainment screen. It can keep mapping on the top one while other options are down below, it’s also where your off-roading and wading depth information is displayed. The upper screen also tilts to avoid glare on a sunny day. Two rotary dials control climate, radio and media functions when the upper screen is in use. The gauge cluster is its own 12-inch screen, and all of them can be customized to show whatever information the driver wishes. A new full-color head-up display is optional.

Lane-departure warning and emergency braking is standard with cruise control while blind-spot monitors, lane keeping, traffic sign recognition and others are optional with the Drive Pack. Drive Pack Pro adds even more including high-speed emergency braking, adaptive speed limiter and adaptive cruise control. Parking aids are in a separate option pack called Park Pack.

Adaptive cruise control with steering assist is in a separate package, but it still requires the driver’s hands to be on the wheel.
