Major efforts to protect endangered species

Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment released 3,366 turtles in nesting season last year. The success rate of the nest allocation was 96 percent and the hatching rate for this season was 82 percent.

The action is part of strategy of the Ministry protecting endangered land and marine species by preserving the environmental heritage and protecting natural and marine resources, especially as a national wealth for present and future generations, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

In a statement to mark the World Turtle Day, which falls on May 23 and aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting endangered turtles, the Ministry’s Environmental Protection Reserves & Wildlife Department said it is continuing its efforts to monitor rare and endangered species and protect and preserve them.

A hawksbill sea turtle was added in the Annex A of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to protect it from extinction. The hawksbill sea turtle was also included in the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, while studies have shown that they live in the Gulf waters, specifically on the northeastern shores of Qatar.

It noted that efforts to protect sea turtles began early with the support of Qatar Petroleum and the implementation of Qatar University and the active participation of specialists by announcing a project to protect hawksbill sea turtles in 2003, pointing out that it had announced the start of the season of nesting sea turtles for 2018 during the period from April 1 to August 1 in the Qatari islands and the northern coasts of the country, especially in Fuwairit Beach, which has the largest number of rare and endangered sea turtles.

احتفلت وزارة البلدية والبيئة، أمس، باليوم العالمي للسلاحف الذي يوافق 23 مايو سنوياً والهادف إلى زيادة الوعي بأهمية حماية السلاحف المهددة بالانقراض.

وتولي وزارة البلدية والبيئة، ممثلة في إدارة الحماية والحياة الفطرية، أهمية كبيرة في استراتيجيتها لحماية الأنواع المهددة بالانقراض، بالبحث عن الأنواع البرية والبحرية المهددة بالانقراض، والتي تُعتبر ثروة قومية للدولة وللأجيال القادمة، ويأتي ذلك ضمن رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 من خلال المحافظة على الموروث البيئي وحماية الموارد الطبيعية والثروات البحرية، خاصة السلاحف البحرية.

وتواصل الوزارة جهودها في رصد الأنواع النادرة والمهددة بالانقراض وبذل الجهد في سبيل حمايتها وإعادة صيانتها؛ حيث تم إدراج السلحفاة منقارية الصقر عام 1973 في الملحق (أ) للاتفاقية الدولية للتجارة بالكائنات الفطرية المهددة بالانقراض (CITES) لحمايتها من الانقراض، كما أدرجت السلحفاة منقارية الصقر في اللائحة الحمراء للاتحاد الدولي لحفظ وصون الطبيعة والموارد الطبيعية (IUCN)، وقد أثبتت الدراسات وجود تجمع لها في المياه الخليجية، وتحديداً في الشواطئ الشمالية الشرقية في قطر.

ومن أهم المناطق التي تُعشش بها السلاحف هي شواطئ راس لفان ولحويلة والمارونة وفويرط والغارية والمفير، وكذلك جزر حالول وشراعوه وأم تيس وركن.من جانب آخر حقق مشروع حماية السلاحف البحرية المهددة بالانقراض الذي تنفذه الوزارة ممثلة بإدارة الحماية والحياة الفطرية، إنجازاً ورقماً قياسياً غير مسبوق في عدد أعشاش السلاحف بشاطىء فويرط.

وصل عدد الأعشاش إلى 70 عشاً، وهو أكبر رقم منذ انطلاق المشروع في عام 2003.
