Qatar Global Leader in Tackling Methane Emissions

Doha: English-language newspaper, The Peninsula, said that the State of Qatar is a global leader in tackling methane emissions as it has achieved impressive progress in reducing methane intensity in the energy sector over the past decade, and earlier this year, it endorsed the Global Methane Pledge.

According to the United Nations Environment Pro-gramme (UNEP), methane is the primary contributor to the formation of ground-level ozone, a hazardous air pollutant and greenhouse gas, exposure to which causes one million premature deaths every year, the paper said.

The paper referred to QatarEnergy’s announcement on Monday that it had joined the Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative – an industry-led initiative that aims to reach near-zero methane emissions from operated oil and gas assets by 2030. According to the announcement, QatarEnergy is the first company to join the initiative outside its 12 existing signatories: Aramco, BP, Chevron, CNPC, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Occidental, Petrobras, Repsol, Shell and TotalEnergies, the paper added.

The newspaper noted that HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi said that by being the first company to join the Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative outside its 12 existing signatories, QatarEnergy reaffirms Qatar’s priorities and commitments with regards to the climate change agenda, and its unwavering support to the global effort to reducing emissions, including methane.

He also noted that the pledge also aligns with QatarEnergy’s recently announced Sustainability Strategy and follows landmark steps that include signing the guiding principles on reducing methane emissions across the natural gas value chain and endorsing the Global Methane Pledge, the paper said.
In March this year, QatarEnergy outlined an updated Sustainability Strategy to scale up its carbon capture and storage and solar power generation capabilities as part of its drive to reduce the carbon footprint at its facilities by 2035 significantly. The plan aims to capture over 11 million tonnes per annum of CO2 in Qatar by 2035, The Peninsula concluded.

الدوحة: أكدت صحيفة /البننسولا/ الناطقة باللغة الإنجليزية في افتتاحيتها، يوم أمس، على أن دولة قطر تعتبر رائدة عالميا في معالجة انبعاثات غاز الميثان حيث حققت تقدما مذهلا في تقليل كثافة الميثان في قطاع الطاقة على مدار العقد الماضي، وفي وقت سابق من هذا العام، صادقت على التعهد العالمي بشأن الميثان.

وقالت إنه وفقا لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة، الميثان هو المساهم الرئيسي في تكوين طبقة الأوزون على مستوى الأرض، وهو أحد ملوثات الهواء الخطرة وغازات الاحتباس الحراري، والذي يسبب مليون حالة وفاة مبكرة كل عام.

ولفتت الصحيفة إلى إعلان شركة قطر للطاقة أمس عن انضمامها لمبادرة استهداف الانبعاثات الصفرية، وهي إحدى مبادرات قطاع الطاقة الهادفة للوصول إلى ما يقارب انبعاثات صفرية من غاز الميثان في أصول النفط والغاز التي يشغلها بحلول عام 2030، وبذلك تكون قطر للطاقة أول من انضم إلى المبادرة من خارج المؤسسين الـ12 الحاليين، وهم: أرامكو، بي بي، شيفرون، سي إن بي سي، إيني، إيكوينور، إكسون موبيل، أوكسيدنتال، بتروبراس، ريبسول، شل، وتوتال إنرجيز.

وأشارت إلى تأكيد سعادة المهندس سعد بن شريده الكعبي وزير الدولة لشؤون الطاقة، العضو المنتدب والرئيس التنفيذي لقطر للطاقة، “إن كون قطر للطاقة هي الأولى التي تنضم إلى مبادرة استهداف انبعاثات الميثان الصفرية من خارج المؤسسين، فهذا يعيد التأكيد على أولويات والتزامات دولة قطر فيما يتعلق بأجندة تغير المناخ، ودعمها الثابت للجهود العالمية للحد من الانبعاثات، بما في ذلك انبعاثات غاز الميثان. وكذلك، فإن هذا الأمر يتماشى مع استراتيجية الاستدامة التي أعلنتها قطر للطاقة مؤخرا، ويأتي في أعقاب خطوات بارزة أخرى تشمل توقيع وثيقة المبادئ التوجيهية للحد من انبعاثات غاز الميثان عبر مراحل صناعة الغاز الطبيعي، والانضمام للتعهد العالمي بشأن الميثان”.

واختتمت الصحيفة افتتاحيتها بالقول، إنه في مارس 2022، أعلنت شركة قطر للطاقة عن خطط رائدة لتوسيع قدراتها على احتجاز الكربون وتخزينه، وكذلك إنتاج الطاقة الشمسية، كجزء من استراتيجيتها للحد من البصمة الكربونية في منشآتها الصناعية، وتهدف الخطة إلى التقاط أكثر من 11 مليون طن سنويا من ثاني أكسيد الكربون في قطر بحلول عام 2035.
