Complete shutdown if epidemic doesn’t decline: Dr. Al Khal

QNA

Doha: Chair of the National Health Strategic Group on COVID-19 and Head of Infectious Diseases at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal affirmed that Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines approved in the State of Qatar are effective against the new strains of COVID-19, and that there is a decrease in the number of infections among the groups that received the vaccination, which is an indicator recorded in a number of countries of the world and reflects the effectiveness of vaccines that have exceeded 90 percent so far.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday evening about the latest developments related to the coronavirus (COVID-19), Dr. Al Khal said that curbing the spread of the virus requires that the majority of the population have received vaccination, noting that any epidemic that spreads through the respiratory system is not largely controlled until the vaccination rate among the population reaches more than 60 percent.

He noted that the vaccination of most members of the community will take several months and until this is done the virus will continue to spread, therefore it is imperative that everyone continue to apply all preventive measures.

Dr. Al Khal warned that the failure of members of society to carry out their role in following the new restrictions and measures will cause an increase in the number of daily infections. Meanwhile, he praised the strong will of the Qatari community and the means available to curb the virus, stressing that adhering to the precautionary and preventive measures during the next period will contribute greatly to limiting the spread of the virus and decreasing the number of infections.

On expectations regarding the curve of infections during upcoming month of Ramadan, Dr. Al Khal indicated that last Ramadan witnessed an increase in the number of cases because of family visits and social meetings, expressing his concern about the recurrence such situation this year. Accordingly, it was necessary to impose more restrictions to avoid an aggravation of the situation in the holy month and the blessed Eid Al-Fitr.

He called on everyone to fully adhere to the precautionary measures and stay at homes as much as possible to avoid the spread of the virus, looking forward to the possibility of easing some restrictions during the holy month and celebrating the blessed Eid Al-Fitr.

Dr. Al Khal noted the importance of adherence to precautionary measures outside homes even after taking the vaccine, as well as preserving the principle of “one bubble” in social visits, in addition to not leaving the house except for necessity during the coming period, stressing that the new restrictions will not be easy, but it will contribute to receding the pandemic and defeating the virus.

On the concept of implementing the bubble system, Dr. Al Khal explained that it means that the group which meets frequently – with a limited number of people – does not mix with members of other families as much as possible. This is also applied for friends who meet frequently, so that their number remains limited and fixed without mixing with others. “If we can keep these bubbles within the one family and the same group of friends, we will be able to contain the virus,” he said.

Chair of the National Health Strategic Group on COVID-19 and Head of Infectious Diseases at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal said that the number of COVID-19 cases in the State of Qatar is increasing because of the new strains appeared in the United Kingdom and then spread in various countries of the world, in addition to not abiding to the preventive and precautionary measures by some members of society, especially during social gatherings.

He noted that the indicators of pandemic activity in the community have increased significantly, including the percentage of positive tests in random samples taken from those who contacted infected persons or people with symptoms of respiratory infection, in addition to the infection of all age groups with the virus, which indicates its spread among families, pointing to the remarkable increase in the number of deaths, as 7 people died last week, and 7 more died this week.

Dr. Al Khal said that the past two weeks have witnessed a significant increase in the number of cases being admitted to hospitals and intensive care units, and despite the States ability to maintain a constant level of new daily cases during February, the number of infections started to increase despite the measures currently in place, and the daily rate of cases has increased. This indicates that the State is witnessing a new wave of the virus with more than 500 new cases are recorded daily, and this number is likely to increase during the next 14 days.

Dr. Al Khal explained that during the past two weeks, the infection rate increased by 20 percent in the number of active cases, noting that there are more than 13,500 active cases and more than 1,200 infected people are currently receiving care in various hospitals.

He noted that despite the efforts made to prevent the new variants from entering into Qatar, the State, like many countries in the region and various countries of the world, is witnessing an increase in the cases of the new variant discovered in the United Kingdom, which is considered the more contagious. He explained that the circulation of the UK variant has contributed significantly to the spread of COVID-19 in Qatar and to the recent increase in cases, as it is more highly transmissible and clinical evidence appears to now show that the UK variant can cause more severe illness.

He continued, “In recent days, we have also identified a number of cases of the South African variant among returning travelers. The new restrictions will help ensure the South African variant does not enter the community and become the dominant strain.”

He noted that the new strain does not cause different symptoms, but it is more likely to spread among individuals, and some evidence indicates that the new strain may cause severe disease.

Dr. Al Khal said that despite the acceleration of the vaccination program, more time is needed to vaccinate community groups who are over 16 years old. He noted that more than 650 thousand doses of the vaccine have been given and more than 20 thousand people receive the vaccine daily, and more than 200 thousand people have taken the two doses, adding that it is expected that the number of vaccinations provided per week will increase to 180 or 200 thousand doses.

Dr. Al Khal underlined the importance of adhering to the decisions issued to limit the spread of the virus, reviewing the restriction that will be imposed starting Friday regarding social events, malls, mosques and others in the framework of the re-escalation of restrictions plan imposed by the State.

For his part, Chairman of HMC Intensive Care Units Dr. Ahmed Al Mohammed noted an increase in the number of coronavirus cases during the last two weeks, accompanied by an increase in cases requiring hospitalization as well as intensive care units after a period of stability.

Dr. Al Mohammed said that the number of cases that required hospitalization was around 668 in the second week of March, rising to 1136 in the third week of the same month, with an increase of more than 70 percent during the last two weeks. Meanwhile, the number of cases that required ICU admission rose to 113 from 88, an increase of 28 percent.

He noted that these figures are a cause for concern because they require intensive health preparations.

Dr. Al Mohammed said that the new strain is characterized by the speed of spread and more severe complications among the infected compared to the previous strain, which means a change in the quality of the virus and not only in the number of infections.

He added that the number of deaths is also increasing, which was one or two cases a week at most, but has jumped to about 14 deaths during the last two weeks, which requires strict measures to curb the pandemic, whether through preventive measures or in terms the health services provided.

In this context, he underlined that the State of Qatar has continued to provide health care to the patients, and is now in the process of increasing the number of beds and medical staff to face the new situation.

On the age groups in the intensive care unit, Dr. Al Mohammad pointed to the increase in the number of cases that suffer severe complications due to the new strain in groups under 50 years old, by approximately 40 percent of the total number of cases, stressing that there is a clear change in the pattern of spread of the virus and its severity even in groups under the age of 40.
