Private Museums Enhance Cultural Vision, Community Awareness in Qatar

QNA

Doha: Besides the various museums of the State of Qatar, the country is rich with a group of private museums that enhance the country’s cultural vision, so that collectors join the museums’ honor roll in order to contribute to preserving this legacy for successive generations.

Qatar News Agency (QNA) sheds light on the importance, strength and presence of private museums in the country’s cultural scene, as well as the experiences and contribution of these museums on the occasion of the International Museum Day, which falls on May 18 every year.

Among the most important and prominent private museums is HE Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum, located in Al Sheehaniya area. With its precious treasures, the museum narrates chapters of the history of the State of Qatar, passing through areas, civilizations and ancient times. It occupies an area of about 50,000 square meters and includes more than 50,000 rare pieces from four different continents.

HE Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum is divided into more than 17 sections, including heritage, vehicles, Islamic art, fossils, carpets, the Palestinian house, the levant house, the Egyptian house, and others.

HE Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum, which is one of the most famous private museums for Islamic art and antiques in the Middle East, said in an exclusive interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA) that he inherited his fondness and interest in collecting art pieces and the preservation of the heritage since childhood from his father Sheikh Qassim bin Faisal who took him to visit many museums and archaeological sites in the Arab Gulf region and all over the world, such as Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Greece, and other countries. HE added that this contributed to the refinement of his knowledge and the increase of his connection to this world, and even his awareness of the importance of heritage which is a main link and a focal point that links individuals to their past and establishes a clear understanding of the future within civilized societies.

He pointed out that his beginning was by collecting fossils, postage stamps, toys and many pieces of artistic dimension, especially those that were from famous personalities, adding that his interest in this field increased and expanded to include many historic pieces from all over the world. This prompted him to think of making this distinguished collection within the reach of every lover of history and heritage The museum’s goal was to preserve, document and display all historical and artistic heritage pieces, he said, explaining that the beginning was through a Qatari heritage building in the Al Samriya farm.

He noted that his interest in these collectibles enriched his thought, knowledge and culture, which has been changed due to cultural cross-fertilization and the differences of the people he meets.

HE said that the museum includes coins from Croesus era, and from countries that are hundreds of years old and those which are no longer exist, in the coins section which has about 4,000 pieces.
In the religions section, the museum provides a service for visitors to get acquainted with these religions, away from false and misleading information, in order to spread a culture of acceptance of the other.

HE Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani stressed that this hobby is very expensive and needs great care, noting that treasures in his museum include things that are no longer available in the global market. For example, he said that ten years ago he was offered to sell a carpet for more than 10 millions of pounds, and a one-off sport car made by France before the World War II, pointing out that all the museum’s items were purchased or received as gifts.

HE stressed his keenness to accompany a number of figures himself, whether those interested in science or policy, on a tour inside the museum, given that some rare and extremely valuable pieces can’t be accessed except by him.

HE Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani recounts his passion for old cars, as he owns around 1000, 500 of which are on a special floor of the JW Marriott Hotel in Doha, and with his own intuition he knew that they would no longer exist. He said that his two sons, Muhammed and Khalid, are more passionate about them.

HE revealed that they are in the process of preparing a special hall in the museum that displays cars of all kinds, especially sports, in preparation for hosting the visitors of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

In this regard, he confirmed to QNA that the World Cup, which will be organized by the State of Qatar, will be an exceptional version, because Qatar is qualified with capabilities not only material, but also intellectual capabilities. HE said that a theater in the museum with the capacity of 500 spectators will host lectures and events introducing the culture and customs, and a special museum for children will be opening soon, adding to the opening of a special section in the museum, which is called mud houses, showing Qatari life in the past and the hardships of life in the last hundred years after several catastrophes have followed, including World War I, disease, pearl recession, World War II and others.

His Excellency also stated that in the coming days, he will open a special section in the museum dealing with the culture of the Islamic and Arab worlds, reviving characters that the current generation has forgotten, and therefore he wants to immortalize them in the new museum.

His Excellency Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al-Thani concluded his talks to QNA by saying, he wants this museum to be a legacy for the nation, as it does not contain treasures from Qatar or the Gulf only, but also from Morocco, Algeria, Indonesia, Malaysia, from the days of Andalusia and from Asia, especially the Quran, and the rarest thing manuscripts he was looking for.

Among the experiences related to private and distinguished museums is Abdulla bin Lahdan Al Mohannadi’s Museum, which is considered one of the most important landmarks of the city of Al Dhakhira. He said that the story of the museum appeared when the old city of Al Dhakhira was demolished, and he witnessed it. He said, in those historical moments, he remembered its history, past, and its people, so he thought about reviving that folklore, especially since he had a hobby of collecting stamps, pictures, coins and some antiques from the Qatari heritage of all kinds and rare collectibles.

When the old city of Al Khor and Al Dhakhira was demolished, he used to keep these collectibles in a room in his house, and when the quantity increased until the room can no longer accommodated those holdings, he thought of making an integrated museum to preserve this heritage and ancient collectibles, as well as to be a legacy for present and future generations and serve researchers and those interested in heritage. He noted that a building was designed in line with the Qatari heritage.

Al Mohannadi added that the Museum includes different sections. There is the old gate, and on the southern side is the Qatari Al-majlis (guest room), and it includes special tables that were used by pearl merchants, as well as a set of musical tools such as radios and old recorders, and tools such as lute, violin, drum, and the tambourines, which cultural popular singers use, in addition to old phones, old tapes and televisions, and old photos. Adjacent to the Majlis is the cafe, which includes different types of old coffee pots, various teapots, bottles, coffee makers, a large tanoor (oven made of mud), fire bellower, and other special tools.

He added that the museum displays in the courtyard of the house, al jleeb (the well) and the water bucket that was present in most Qatari houses, as well as the old outdoor kitchen on the eastern side, which includes al shola (stove), the types of pots, and the tools used in cooking, trays, and al sega (in which they make the Milk). As for the inner kitchen, it included a variety of household items, as well as the bedroom that was used in the past, according to the condition of the people of the house. In the bedroom there is the old bed with its tools, sheets, towels and pillows, and there are almrash (perfumes like the cologne), roshina (shelves in the wall), and the old mirrors with drawings that were brought from India, and various decorative bottles. There are also decorations, womens clothes and types of rare old abayas such as Umm Sammka by the herbal doctor Aisha Al-Ghashali and Al-Bakhnaq (traditional celebration clothes), almulfaa (abayaa worn over the head to cover the whole body) and the Batateel (fabric to cover the face), and old accessories. Additionally, there are the kabet (cabinet) for clothes, which contain colored iron boxes, sondouq mbayeit (big traditional storage boxes), types of old travel bags, and old market guard clothes.

Abdullah Al Mohannadi pointed out that the museum includes a room that recalls the history and past of the city of Al Dhakhira and the most important historical figures who left a great legacy for future generations and includes pictures of poets, narrators, writers, Al-Serdal (captains of the pearl diving ships), Tawaweesh (pearl merchants), Al-Nawakhatha (captains of the boats), Al Nahameen (the singers in the ships), and the great people. There are diving tools of all kinds, as well as types of pearls that are kept in their small boxes, pearl scales and other tools. Additionally, there is a room devoted to old and rare heritage books, magazines and newspapers, as well as old school tools such as books and school bags, which were used by the students of Al Dhakhira in that beautiful era. There is a room dedicated to old building and carpentry materials and tools, and a room dedicated to old children’s games.

Abdullah Al Mohannadi said that the museum contains a group of different doors, the types of stones found in Qatar, the Qatari desert flower from which the Qatar Museum was inspired, as well as some tools that are used in ancient folk games and others, announcing the museum’s readiness to receive the guests of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as it contains Qatar’s heritage. Al Mohannadi added that he welcome coordination with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy and invite them to visit the museum and view its contents, and coordinate with them in order to inform the guests about the heritage of the people of Qatar, especially the Al Dakhira and Al Khor areas.

In turn, the writer and researcher Abdulrahman Al Sunaidi, the author of the book Museums and Private Libraries in Qatar and the owner of the Al Sunaidi Museum of Computer History, explained in a special statement to QNA that during his research journey in the world of private museums, he recorded nine private museums in Qatar in the first section of the book. Afterwards, he found more private museums as well as libraries. He expressed his aspiration to publish an encyclopedia that chronicles and documents the efforts of the owners of museums and private libraries in Qatar.

Al Sunaidi explained that the multiplicity of private museums in the country shows the extent of awareness of Qatari society about history and heritage in Qatar or the world, as the collections show the passion of those interested in heritage in many fields.

The writer called for the necessity of supporting the owners of private museums, especially the unknown, by providing a database about them and introducing their holdings through the concerned authorities in the country such as Qatar Museums, the Ministry of Culture and Qatar Tourism.

About his museum, Al Sunaidi said it started in late 1989, when he was with a group of friends who frequented the commercial market in the Msheireb Downtown. The market at that time was considered a destination for amateurs and professionals, as it includes most of the specialized shops in this field in Qatar. With the development of technology and the Internet, he began to order collectibles from outside the country, and keep them, until he collected a large group of more than 500 pieces of hardware, software and publications, all of which tell and document the history of the computer. It also includes some Arab programs and publications that played a major role in Arabizing the computer, in addition to rare new acquisitions of programs, devices and magazines documenting the development of the computer.
